iPhone SE 4 Expected to Depreciate Heavily

I use my phone until it stops working so I'm not worried about the resale value.

My opinion only, but I think that a great majority of people aren't worried about the resale price. They use the phones until they die or give the phones to other family members.

If you're allowing the depreciation of device impact your buying choice… you really are confused. Just buy nice, and forget about it. Its not an investment you sit on waiting to sell down the line… you dont do that with new furniture, a fridge or microwave.

Makes sense, there will be nothing unique or special about the new SE. it will just be a low cost iPhone, rapidly replaced by other low cost iPhones with better specs. Should have been based on the 13 mini.

I can say this… SE4 ( and especially if it’s battery gets 1000 lifecycles) will do better than the iPhone 14 modes which are the worst iPhones in this department Non SE Wise because they are the last ones with lightning, have terrible battery life ( iPhone 14 Pro), incremental upgrades ( especially the 14) and the 15 series is just much better with USB C which not only depreciates the 14’s but the 14 Pros have USB 2.0 and the 15’s have USB 3.1

Hoping SE4 has at least USB 3.0 but USB C Alone improves depreciation so much better

Well duh. People that want an iPhone want the best ones. I think there should only be Pro models why have a crappier experience on a device you use a lot?
Thats very elitist… most people just want a decent phone, thats all. And Apple offer a range, precisely because people buy a range of devices. People have different likes, budgets etc… even if you have money… why give more away if the basic iPhone is sufficient.

I do think this article is a bit silly. Also think if the redesign goes as rumored, this phone would hold a bit more long term value than other SEs since it will be the minimum entry point for USB C, so it will always be in demand until updates die.

I think the numerous people pointing out the word "investment" in the article need to understand context and the word's uses. Everyone for some bizarre reason is forcing the word to mean "I put money in and I will get money out".
Actually, no.
I certainly use the word as it is intended to be…

USB C is terrible.

I just carry my wireless charger everywhere. It’d annoying but I hate USB C

If one would really think that way one would realize that in absolute terms you loose less value while having spend a fraction when you bought it.

I mean...no kidding? The 2022 SE is basically the 2020 SE with 5G added...which was using a really dated design 4 years ago. It's not even worth the price they're asking for a new one based solely on the value of the design and components relative to what else is available from Apple. Of course it isn't going to hold any value for resale.

What else is new? Lower-end products never hold the resale value that their flagship cousins do. Same reason you can resell an XDR display for 80% of new but an M1 Mac mini is $240.
That's because the M1 mini has been replaced with a newer faster model. The XDR display is still a current product. Stuff that doesn't get upgraded as often holds its value better.

Look at the higher end M1 studios. They've depreciated percentagewise more than the minis have.

As an affordable, entry level iPhone, depreciation is irrelevant. I have the 2020 version, and it still works like new, and supports the current iOS and all apps. If I keep it until 2025, even if it were to depreciate 100%, I'd have lost less to depreciation in dollars than the same year iPhone or iPhone Pro. I bought it for the size, not the camera.

OMG! I have to sell my SE to a broker now while I can still get a dime for it! It's worth taking the huge financial hit today instead of going through the very dangerous and impossibly challenging process of selling my SE outside of a professional broker. I don't mind that they give me 33% of its value, they need money to pay for their workers and yacht /s

Of course, if you're treating your phone like an investment, sell it privately and forget about brokers and their fees & depreciation. Brokers by their nature have a lot of phones coming their way and don't have a reason to buy your phone at the price that is remotely close to the price you can get.
