Having only one camera is a terrible decision because this product will probably have a decent demographic and without a second camera there won't be spatial photos/video, which doesn't help them build up that ecosystem that Apple Vision Pro is really kind of lacking. I hate when Apple makes decisions like that.
Ahh, spend more money and get a model with what you want…

You’re yapping about a 3K+ item to create content for and focusing on the basement model of phone? Seriously?

Disappointed to see the raised camera island on the rear again. In previous renders only the lens was raised which looks so much cleaner.

Agreed. This looks so much better.

If its a Mini that would be wonderful and would make it different from the "normal" iPhones.
Just having a camera downgrade but same size or similar size to the new normal large phones would only have the price.
I am currently on iPhone 12 mini and would upgrade to this one if it was similar in size.

Please, please, please... use 5.4 inch display...
Be our new mini!
The market already said people want a bigger display
dont be surprised if they stop selling the 14 and 15 completeley.

all in on apple intelligence.
If those rumors are true, iPhone 15 will disappear as soon as the “16E” will be launched. iPhone 14 was already removed from EU websites.
My thoughts are that these will not have a "dynamic" island - just a dynamic Island shaped cutout.

That the island will only house a regular camera, not Face ID.

Touch ID on the power button like the IP Air.
Very unlikely. If there is a Dynamic Island, FaceID will be there.

Why would anyone buy an iPhone 16 over this? The only difference that’s noticeable to the avg user is the second camera, and how many base model purchasers even caree
MagSafe is missing too.
It's still a notch! Apple even calls it that internally.

"Dynamic Island" is just the marketing term that Apple boffins came up with after years of consumers complaining about the gap.

It seems that people really do have their rose colored glasses on when it comes to the Apple bubble.
Consumer complaining ? Where ? Only on MacRumors consumers complain about Dynamic Island. I’m perfectly fine with it.
You should stay away from iOS 18 and beyond even though it wouldn’t bog down your iPhone:

iPhones 13 and older only have 4GB RAM (or less).

And in my view that’s just enough to run iOS 18 but not enough to do so smoothly.

iOS 18 also doesn’t offer much additional features that iOS 17 didn’t have.

Only Apple Intelligence is a genuine addition that isn’t available in iOS 17.

But your iPhone doesn’t support AI so there’s no reason to move to iOS 18.
iOS 13 is working perfectly smoothly on my son’s iPhone 13 and on my other son’s iPhone 13 Pro.
I wonder what the trade-offs will be compared to the base 16, because this will 100% replace the 14 and 15.

- One camera
- Apple modem/no mmWave
- Probably no U1/U2 chip? Or if anything it'll get the U1
- No action button
- No camera control

I really don't think this will ditch the Dynamic Island or MagSafe, especially if it's based off the iPhone 14. I also don't think they'll ditch Face ID for a side button Touch ID solution a la iPad, because that hasn't been done on an iPhone and the SE is the last place where they'd develop a new component like that.

My worries are that Apple will do something *really* drastic to keep prices low, like starting at 64GB storage or using an LCD screen.
MagSafe could be missing.
I don’t think they are going to sell something below 128 GB, but the display could be LCD, which is perfectly fine if it is a good LCD.

Honestly, at this rate, we will probably just buy SE from now since there is no incentive to buy even a regular model. We don't use the phone camera as our main shooting device in the family, since we have a proper full frame mirrorless Canon and a camera button does nothing to us. I guess the only thing they could do to keep people off SE is release it with 64GB storage. Only then it would be problematic for people like us.
Of course I'll hold onto my 13 mini to the last moment, because 6,1" screen is just uncomfortable for me.

In a private social media post, Blass shared an image

Say what now? Private and social...in one sentence?

LOL! 😀

Good catch but, on reflection, sort of makes sense. For example, say, Blass sent something to a friend or a restricted group of friends — and one of them released it to MR!

Raises ethical questions, but who knows what actually happened?

I share another commenter's question about the images — Blass apparently showed code. What's being displayed in the drawings of the iPhones of different sizes?

The market already said people want a bigger display
“It’s not the customer’s job to know what they want” - Steve Jobs

Hmm… The market is a convenient fiction. “People” do not universally want a bigger display. Many want a return to the mini or the original iPhone SE size.

The Minis sold a fair amount, but didn't make as much money as the higher margin, high-end phones did. Same thing happens when national chains close certain locations. They were often profitable, but not as much as HQ wanted.

Apple should bring back a small phone — just as they should release an M series 12” MacBook. After all, if they can sell an iPhone SE, #X, #X Plus, #X Pro, they could certainly sell a Mini as well. It would generate enormous buzz and good will.

Lose the notch & DI, and bring back a real home button, too! (Alas, that last ship has sailed!)

This is pretty much an iPhone 16 without the ultra-wide camera and Camera Control. Seems too good for an SE.

Each SE that has come out so far seemed "too good for an SE" at the time it launched.

Having owned both the first and second generation SE, the single biggest drawback was the poor battery life compared to its more expensive siblings

I'd like an iPhone SE Plus.

128gb storage is fine.
48mpx camera is fine.
U2 chip would be nice.
Magsafe would be nice.
Metallic red would be lovely.

But depending on the price, I'd probably just get a near new refurbished iPhone 15 Plus.

Apple needs to get on this publicly if this isn't true. Imagine the disappointment when they officially announce it at a press conference.

Surely they won’t have a new phone that doesn’t have MagSafe?
Since MagSafe has been there on iPhones 12 through 16, and this SE 4 is based on one or a combo of those, it would be very unlikely that Apple doesn’t include it in the SE 4.

Although more than just a ring of magnets, I can’t see the parts that make up MagSafe being so costly that Apple gains significant profits from omitting it.

Especially not when you consider how aware consumers are of MagSafe and how many want it.

The faster wireless charging that MagSafe enables is also a powerful incentive for a lot of buyers to upgrade their iPhones to a newer model.

It’s a very popular spec/feature that adds a lot of value for buyers despite being inexpensive to manufacture.

They will want to keep the price low on this one.

Remember the humble MacBook during the Intel transition, they sold it for a decent price as an entry level method to get people into the Apple ecosystem and have many stay there? If you're using 14 internals, try to make it accessible to people and perhaps they will get hooked?

The catch is the camera and the Apple 5G modem. And no 120Hz promotion etc.
But the regular 16 doesn't have ProMotion either, unless they're strictly thinking ahead to the 17.

And I don't think most customers will notice/care about the modem unless Apple advertises it. That's more of an enthusiast thing to know about.

Its basic ergonomics. Large phones cannot be used comfortably with one hand for the 95th percentile of people. We've all done that weird finger-fu thing required to just summon notifications. I guarantee the majority of dropped phones (and cracked screens) are someone taking a bump from a passerby whilst doing it. People will point out bigger screens are better for consuming social media but don't stop to consider whether this is even a good thing.

In a world where iPads exist there is no need for such large phones. There is nothing you need a massive iPhone or Android for that an iPad Mini or even a folding phone doesn't better accommodate for. That narrow screen the Samsung Fold gets roasted for is actually there so the devuce can be used closed with one hand comfortably.

And as you correctly say, it wouldn't be the end of the world if we got some slightly larger bezels across the top and bottom to accommodate a home button and the camera array and make the screen blemish free.

I didn't find the 2nd or 3rd SEs too good. As you said the battery and some of the specs didn't quite keep up. The original SE I totally agree, it actually got higher battery life rating by Apple than the 6S that came out just months before. IMG_4290.jpeg

I really wish people would stop saying that “the market has spoken” with regard to smaller phones

iPhone minis sold just fine and were certainly not losing money.

It would really be nice if Apple would offer them even if it wasn’t going to be some mega seller just so their customers would have some choices to best suit their own needs
