It's a cheaper model and they sell like hotcakes. Apple makes good money from the iPhone SE. It's very much affordable for regular consumers.
I like the design, because paired with a decent case, the XR was a durable and affordable phone that lasted so many of the kids I know through middle and high school, including my own. The display was a good size for gaming and FaceTime calls.

I’ve owned an iPhone since iPhone 3gs. I now own a iPhone SE 2. If these rumors are true, and SE 4 takes the size of iPhone XR, my last iPhone will probably be iPhone 13 mini.

In my mind, phones that needs two hands for operation are the stupidest thing that the tech world has created and sold in mass. Sorry, but it’s just dumb.

The press and others used to make fun of huge phones being bent while carried in the back pocket. Now people can’t get enough of them. Many can’t even get the phones in their front pockets because of huge plastic ad-ons coupled to the back of the gigantic phones just to let them get a safe grip. The phones are themselves are then carried in a bag.

I’ve been a huge fan of Apple since 2005, and iPhones has been my favorite Apple product. The size was chosen because of how it was supposed to be used, with and without a home button (rushed to be used in iPhone 5, because of bigger batteries/phones from the competitors). Now it has been turned into a heavy phablet that doesn’t do a good job of being either.

It was fun as long as it lasted.

By the time the iPhone SE comes out, the flagship iPhone lineup will have transitioned entirely to the Dynamic Island, so the older notch design will set the iPhone SE apart.”

Two steps forward and one step back with Apple.

The “dynamic island” 🤮 was my least favourite thing about the iPhone 14 pro max and helped me in my decision to send it back.

The new SE might be just right for me, especially with Apple products’ pricing going through the roof overseas.

Will it have a battery that lasts more than 4 hours? My company supplied 2021 SEs as work phones, and if it wasn't for working from home due to Covid I would have phone the phone completely useless and always searching for a charger. Even with a battery case it barely lasts more than half a day.
It will as it will gain a ton of battery when using the XR body.

Yeah, it's the unfortunate evolution of the phone. Let's just hope that Apple will keep the 13 mini in the lineup for another year.

The growing consumer market for a phone has changed. People buying phones are no longer people who already have computers/laptops (thus the phone screen size is not as critical). The growth is in markets where people buying phone as their first, and even only, device with a screen. As such, they prefer the largest screen they can get for their money as the phone has become their productivity and entertainment device in one. The lack of battery technology advancements also pushes larger phones to hold larger batteries powering all the hardware and sensors.

In Android world, 6.1" is now considered "compact."

Agree. The SE will remain a sub-$500 phone.

Assuming it comes in spring of 2024 which is likely based on all prior iPhone SE release timeframes, you’re close, yeah. It would most likely be the iPhone 13 still in the lineup at $599 while the 14 will occupy the $699 slot.

The 13 Mini, like 12 Mini before it, will likely exit before its larger sibling. Perhaps there is a tiny outside shot that the 13 Mini stays instead, still at $599 rather than the 13 at that price. That would both remove the redundancy of two legacy iPhones with the same processor and keep a small iPhone around for another year. But I don’t think there’s much hope for this.

Agree. I think $449 is a good target to expect. Maybe they’ll even surprise us and keep it at $429. Some have suggested the SE3 could stick around (like the iPad 9 did) enabling the SE4 to move up. Possible, but I think it has run its course based on waning sales.
SE4 will remain sub $500 unless Apple actually does this weird, very unlikely XR hybrid design with Touch ID side-button and a new Face ID-less notch.

Apple has never(!) taken an old iPad or iPhone and put in new biometric login hardware or switched the position of it, upgraded the display, switched to a new camera array, etc.

New product launches have only either been a new product with a design and new components all around, or an older one revamped with mainly internal upgrades.

This alleged hybrid design SE4 would be a completely new strategy and goes against the tried-and-true SE formula.
Why "can't" they?
Because that would destroy too many mid-tier and Pro sales and completely go against the SE concept

-Using old parts and already-in-use machinery and tooling to mass produce extremely cheap (to make) smartphones that sell way over their value when considering most specs besides the latest Apple SoC.

SEs main selling point is the SoC, which is why Apple barely touches the rest of the phone.

More RAM, better wireless, better battery life are usually also upgraded . But the parts used for these are usually much lower quality and cheaper than what you find in mid tier and Pro iPhones.

This. The last Jobs approved design. I don't know what iPhone would look like, or how iOS would behave if he were still around, but certainly neither would be what they are today.
Considering Apple probably had product roadmap 3 to 5 years ahead, I believe the iphone 6/6 Plus design was probably already approved by Jobs as well. Jobs was not stupid. He wanted to conquer China market, and seeing rising popularity of the Galaxy Note, he probably was aware of the trajectory of the market preference.

SE is the only phone I can use in the current lineup that doesn’t give me headaches. If Apple screws that up then I’ll be forced to go to the dark side.
Agree. Slithery OLED screens are fine for the slowbrain masses, but people with fast brains who can see the horror of PWM choose LCD whenever possible.

It would be fascinating to know whether this is true. Maybe some "tell-all" book will come out some day.

The 13 mini form factor with an LCD screen and single rear camera would be a pretty sweet combination of size and performance, designed to a price point.
Ditch the notch and put TouchID also, and I would buy instantly. I would pay a high price.

There's still some connoisseurs out here that understand:

HUGE phone is crap
FaceID is crap
Notch is crap
OLED is crap beyond words

Don't even get me started on iOS.

Bizzare that people like me, who could have any iPhone they want, regardless of price, are stuck with the "low end" SE2020/2022.

I feel like if Jobs returned today to run Apple again, everyone involved in any of those decisions above would be instantly fired.

Do you guys think Apple will have enough courage and we will see iPhone SE (2023) implementing the USB-C?
Can we expect the first-ever iPhone with USB-C?
I sooo badly need USB C with faster transfer speeds, i tranbsfer like 200 GB of pictures and videos, files every day to my phone from my laptop, i connect my phone to my laptop like 4 timeas a day. i am syncing all my files in my laptop to my iPhone every hour.
we need thunderbolt 5 for all iPhones now.

“Develop” is such a big word for an essentially same old chip, same old body. “Mix and match inventory” is more like it.
looks like you never worked in designing/manufacturing a product.
change in design to one part can lead to so many changes.
if we take a phone with flat edge and change it to rounded edge it is basically a re design, internals may change and once internals change then they have to start redesigning internal modules, it is like a chain reaction.

Historically, Apple has never been the first with new technology. Samsung will have a flux capacitor first, and it will take Apple 3-4 years to introduce it because "they want to get it right". :)
Just like hpw Samsung got first face ID right.

Given the increase in price, it really is better to buy a 13 Mini.
Perhaps you'll get a little less time with regards to updates, but I think the quality makes it better.
Much better screen, more resistant, better looking (yes, looks are a factor in smartphones).
Especially since there won't be the advantage (to some at least) of the touch ID.
an SE should cost less to be considered a real budget option...currently the SE just isn't a good deal.

And yet. They can’t figure out how to put usb-c on their phones. I guess that’s an earth-shattering feature that needs to be tested 4-5 generations. My point was they make it into such a big deal. But it is nothing compared to the new model of that year.

Holding onto a sliver of hope that Apple splinters off the SE into two sizes—6.1” (or whatever huge size) and 5.4”. But doubt it.
Well, there have been rumors about an SE Plus. Maybe Apple will release a smaller 5.7" & larger 6.1"? Especially if sales of the iPhone 14 Plus continue to struggle, I wouldn't be surprised if Apple went with two sizes on the SE to see if upselling consumers on a larger, but cheaper phone (than the 14 Plus) will work.

While that’d be nice (although 5.7” is much too large for me), it would be weird to call a 6.1” phone a “Plus”, since for iPhone 14, “Plus” was used for a 6.7”, and 6.1” was just considered regular. It might confuse people to switch that up. But possibly.

I can totally see two version of the SE so that they can upsell Apples most price conscious consumers into spending more money on a design they should have gotten years ago and trick them into thinking they got a deal. I also expect price increases on both models if they think they can get away with it. Maybe $50 higher entry price and a $150 higher price for the bigger model that would have normally replaced the SE completely but is now a premium device. Whatever the price, it will be just close enough to an even more expensive phone to get you to spend a bit more before you even decide to buy it.
