Even the Pixel 8a's rather pedestrian display is better in every way than the current iPhone SE's display. If you don't agree, I guess fine - but there's no way to justify that position with objective measurements.
Pixel 8a launched two years after the current SE, which used an already two years old display: no surprise the screen is better on Google product.
But if you compare it with an iPhone 14 or 15 screen, they are better even if the refresh rate is limited to 60 Hz.

They're both current product and sell for similar money. That's why I compare them.

There’s a Chinese retailer website showing 64GB as the base storage…surely that can’t be the case?

Seems unlikely as the first and second generation iPhone SE models both started at the same minimum storage that current iPhones of the time had. The original SE launched when the 6S was the latest iPhone and both started at 16GB storage. The SE 2 launched when the 11 was the latest iPhone and both started at 64GB storage.

The one exception, however, is the SE 3 which started at 64GB while the latest phone (13) started at 128GB. Outside of the SE 3, the starting storage for iPhones has been 128GB for 4 1/2 years and I would guess that the new SE 4/16E will start at 128GB as well.

Not really. The upcoming SE/16E is expected to have the current/more powerful A18 processor, increased RAM, higher resolution main camera, Apple-designed 5G modem, Apple Intelligence support, and more.
The post I was responding to maintained the new SE will be basically an iPhone 12. It is basically an iPhone 14 with the added features you list.

If you are looking to get a new phone or other device, I would get them now before the tariffs and counter tariffs take off. It is going to make the price of phones and other devices more expensive.

Yes. My point was that the upcoming SE 4/16E isn’t basically either the 12 or the 14 as it is expected to have a variety of new features or upgrades over both.

If you are lucky you could find an iPhone XR still on sales somewhere. That doesn’t make it a current product. I mean, yes it technically is, but you can’t compare it with a much more recent one.
I’ve never been a fan of the SE for that specific reason: it is an old iPhone with a “modern” (not anymore) SoC

It looks like it's gonna be better than the base-model iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 in many significant ways. The new SE may seriously affect the sale of these models.

I think the point is that it's 2025

120hz should be the standard

These people should be Android users. They want to spend as little money as possible and get as much technology as possible. They'll always be unhappy Apple customers.

If 120 Hz screen refresh rate is standard, then Apple is selling a non-standard phone.

Who are "these people"?

Who are "these people"?

All the people on Macrumors who constantly complain about Apple high prices and low specifications.
They also complain about upgrade prices for memory and disk size, only 8Gb of RAM as standard, high repair costs, only 5Gb iCloud storage size as standard, and it goes on and on.

And these people have being doing this for years.

You're one of them.

I'm a user of Apple products and have been since the 1980s

Any of us are well within our rights to complain about things we don't like

I also discuss many of things I LOVE about Apple products, maybe you've missed that?
My post history is open to all! - enjoy! ;)

Those include my M4 Mac Mini, AirPods, iPad Mini 5, iPod Nano 7, iPod Shuffles .. on and on
(way too many to list .. that's just stuff I'm using literally TODAY)

With respect, you don't get to decide what's "ok to discuss" or "how" we get to talk about things here

Your opinion is no more valid than anyone else's, sorry
🤷‍♂️

Everyone is waiting to see what this Apple Custom 5G Modem is all about. All the years of research( since 2014) Hiring Modem experts ( poach hired Qualcomm President and top modem engineer)and canceled projects( Apple iCar canceled)and billions invested( purchased Intel patents)for a tiny modem. 📱 Cook 🧑‍🍳 it’s time for the big reveal. Steve Jobs will be watching from above.

There will not be iPhone SE.
iPhone Air is the new phone

See you next week!

In a way, this makes sense.

"Welcome to the family" , as teased by Tim Cook, indicating a new family member. Which, the iPhone SE, technically is not. So "Air" would make sense.

But then again, the iPhone Air is said to be a mid-tier device (price wise) and expected to fall in between the iPhone 17 and 17 Pro, so then it's not going to be a low cost device - which is what Apple needs at this moment, because of the USB-C regulation and the sales ban of anything older than the iPhone 15.

I think we'll get a budget iPhone, but I don't think it will be called SE or Air.

16E, as the earlier rumors suggested perhaps?

Apple is likely to sell over 20 million iPhone SE 4 units this year, making it the most popular iPhone SE model ever, according to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

I'm not as optimistic as Kuo.

There are two reasons people go for the "SE" line: low price, and small size. But the new 16e is about the same size as the regular 16, and it's $170 pricier than the previous SE.

It's not going to be a killer success.
