Well done, Apple. I can't remember the last time that Apple released a product that was universally praised, even by non-Apple fanboys, and also had a price tag that everyone loves.

Let's see how well it sells. I think it will bomb and die within 18 months to be replaced by a 4" iPhone 7 design.

Bingo!

Take a moment to think through this.

-Apple sold 30 MILLION 4" phones last year. This is proof that people want this form factor.

-*most* smart phone users/buyers are not worried about the latest "gadgetry". They may want their phone "up to date" every few years so that it doesn't feel slow or to replace an aging device. Maybe even to gain some useful features like contactless payments. But otherwise they just want a decent phone, not to win the specs arms race for 3 mo at a time.

-Keeping a form factor that people have liked for 3 years is good for several reasons. One major reason is that there are thousands of quality accessories, cases, stands, docks, etc for this form factor.

This means that from day one there are countless options available for the phone. No waiting for 3mo-6mo or forever for the accessory you want to arrive. Some people may even keep a case they love from their 5s.

Companies that develop accessories are FAR more likely to develop for IPhones if they know they have a ~100million potential customers and that the product can be sold over several years for the same design. This means more quality accessories for the end user.

The consumer is also more likely to spend more money on those quality accessories if they know it will last them for many years and/or multiple phones.

This is an area where Android fails miserably. Few accessory manufacturers make high end model specific accessories for them. There are so many different shapes, sizes and changes so quickly that few companies want to make the capital investment for those devices. While android phones as a whole sell lots of units, each individual phone pales in comparison to the iPhone's numbers. So businesses tend to focus their resources on the iPhone first.

Apple was very smart in supporting its customers and the accessories manufacturers by keeping the 5s physical design.

We don't know how many of those 30 million sales were iPhone 5s units so we don't know how popular it was compared to the iPhone 6. I've never had a problem getting hold of accessories for new iPhones. What else do you need apart from a case? I can't see that being a major decision making factor for buyers.

I don't get it. Why spend good money on a 4 year old design? It's going to look even more dated in a few months when they change the design again for the iPhone 7. Why not just make the same design as the 6s but with a smaller screen?

There doesn't seem to be any strategic thinking going on at Apple these days. Looks to me like they're just making it up as they go along with a complete hotchpotch of disparate product designs, styles, colours, etc with no overarching design ethos. Very sad. I used to really like the uniformity of Apples product designs.

Why change? Just for the sake of change? The original VW Beetle kept the same basic body shape and design for about 50 years. The car got constant mechanical and safety improvements over the years, but the basic design didn't change.

The SE proves that Apple's practice of delivering less than excellent models prior to this one paid off... Again.

Just like denying iPhone lovers a modern spacious display for three long years did. The iPhone 6 burst onto the smartphone scene with its 4.7 and 5.5" displays to critical acclaim as though Apple had done something revolutionary.

It's good to be Apple.

the only thing Android's phone have are BIGGER batteries.... That doesn't mean better battery life in many cases.
Apple's SoCs are just better, and Apple isn't following the insane PPI war.

Androids also have expandable memory.
iPhones don't...

At first it was great just hearing the small form factor of the 5s with modern specs, especially chip and camera. But now the main reason I want it is also for its incredible battery life. If I was going to get a 6s is was going to be the Plus for its battery. Now I get more than what I originally wanted from a phone.

And for a fantastic price.

I think the SE will be popular in the US and developed markets. It will be the no brainer choice if you want a free phone with contract. Plus you get pretty much most of the 6S features at entry level instead of a 2-yr old iPhone.

The SD card on Android phones are not as useful as people tout them to be. Unless you are running an unmodified (ie. Samsung) version of Marshmallow, the SD card is hardly used other than to put in pictures/music. Many apps are not moveable to the SD card. Many apps cannot even utilize/recognize the extra space. Worse, Google had been changing their minds back-n-forth on how Android treats the SD card.

Marshmallow finally allows user to integrate the SD card as part of the "internal" storage (unless you have Samsung device). But even then there's performance issue. I tried it on my Android phone, and apps lag severely on "slower" SD cards. You probably need at least a class 10, if not faster, for acceptable performance, and that still won't match the internal storage speed.

Many lay user I have met that use Android don't even bother putting an SD card in, or they just left whatever the store rep put in it. Many apps need to be configured properly to use the SD card, and most people don't bother. Even Google moved away from SD cards on the Nexus since the Galaxy Nexus.

How is the iPhone SE body durability?

The iPhone 5/5S body was poor quality and scratched up and looked bad very easily.

I still have an iPhone 4, yes a 4. But it's solid, I don't use a case and it still looks new.

I'm considering finally upgrading and the SE looks nice, but if the body dents up as easily as the 5/5S I might have to pass.

Anyone know if they've improved on it vs the 5/5S ?

Just curious, did you ever use the TouchID on a iP6? And if so was there an improvement? I don't know if it was officially listed as improved, but many people say the 6 (while being the same speed) is more reliable than the 5S, and they also say it is much harder to spoof than the 5S which would make one believe something in it was changed. My mom had a terrible time with her 5S only working for maybe a week and then not recognizing her finger anymore (I was able to fix it by registering the same finger twice), but neither my wife nor I have had any issues with iPhone 6 or iPad Air 2.

No, I never had the 6, as I really resisted going to the larger sizes as long as possible. But my iPad Pro is much more recent than the 6 and it's just as bad as the 5s was (it's disappointing to say the least that the flagship iPad gets the outdated Touch ID). The 6s Touch ID is just about perfect though.

On another note, does anyone know the security reason why Apple disables Touch ID until we enter our password? I get this constantly on the App Store, and on my iPad Pro when it hasn't been used in a couple days. I thought the whole point of Touch ID was to avoid typing in our password over and over.

My Note 4 (5.7 inch) phone is currenty under repairs, and for my intern phone went for my HTC Mozart (3.7 inch). It was refreshing to switch to a smaller albeit less powerful phone, and I believe the iPhone SE will be a good entry for my entry into iOS. I also like the 'classic' iPhone 5 design, however, Force Touch would have been nice to have.

Do you mean the war they started?

Battery life is good in comparison with other iPhones simply because of the "lower resolution" screen

I am not so sure about the merit of picking a 4 year old design, (older when you consider this style evolved from the 4) those starting a 2-year contract now are going to have a seriously dated looking phone at the end of their contract when the iPhone 7 & 8 are out

"less pleasantly rounded than Apple's more recent designs"

Good. That's a selling point for me. The iPhone 6 is slippery and harder to pick up and hold due to those infernal rounded edges. I'll probably trade in my iPhone 6.

The iPhone 5/5s/SE remains the best designed iPhone yet - - why mess with a good thing?

Still 3 year old design. Maybe to cut down the cost, making this device more affordable? I don't know. I'm glad it is going to make some people happy, I personally would have loved to see a fresh design. It seems like Apple is getting a bit lazy at the design, and if the iPhone 7 rumors are to come true we will have just an iPhone "6se" named iPhone 7.

I am happy for all those who wanted a 4-inch iphone. Its one of those rare occasions where some people wanted something and got it exactly it.

As for iphone 6 battery, i don't know, the battery seems good enough for me. It will last 4 to 5 hours on heavy use and you can charge any where there is an electric socket. Personally I am impressed this thing can play HD videos, games, manage all those wireless signals, and run a retina display and last that long although its so thin.

small screen with all of the efficiency improvements the 6 and 6s have received and slightly larger battery capacity, I'd expect good battery life. Interesting that it beat the Galaxy by so much.

Edit to add: I'm surprised that the 6S also beats the Galaxy by so much in battery life. From the chorus of complaints around here I've inferred that Android (which Galaxy certainly is the major player) has significantly better battery life than iPhone. Maybe there are smaller Android players that do or perhaps the complaints are just universal to modern smart phones but it would appear that at least the two leaders in smart phones have similar battery life (e.g. one is not double the other) and iPhone outlasts the samsung option by a good margin.
The latest Samsung Galaxy smartphones have power-hungry screens that eat battery life like a starved lion in a deli. Apple iPhone screen tech is much easier on the battery.

1. SE is already the "budget phone"
2. Not so soon after initial release
3. Negative impact on ASP during crucial holiday quarter. Wouldn't risk diluting the flagship release with a budget release too. (Though granted they did release the 5c alongside the s)
iPhone SE won't last more than six months as the only 4 inch. iPhone 7 will feature three sizes including 4 inch.

SE, with its rehashed design, is not a budget price at $399. The original iPhone, an entirely new design, was priced for most its life at $399. Budget pricing is more like $199. That's where the SE will be in 6 months.

iPad 3th generation was released in March 2012, superseded a number of months later by iPad 4th generation in November 2012.

Apple is slowly learning customers want a current model design in the original 4 inch form factor and at a great price.

Apple did quite a good job with this iPhone (if you ignore some of the minor drawbacks). Hope we can say the same for the iPhone 7

Minor drawbacks ? like what ? not having 3D Touch (a gimmick), Barometer (didn't know everyone need this) & 1.2MP Front Camera (unless you're a 12 year old girl that taking duck face selfies, you can live with that).

Finally Apple give us what we asked for - powerful 4” iPhone with bigger battery and the latest specs for a good price, and still people always find something to complain about… its a phone, NOT a media consumption device, if thats what you after - looks else were, thats what choices for.

Now I understand why they recycle older iPhones :)
Does this phone also have the rattling power button?

What the SE really proves is that Apple miscalculated how many of us didn't want giant screens.

Bluetooth is pretty convenient–no messing around with cables.

While bluetooth is pretty much standard in cars these day, I drive a 20+ year old Citroen (by choice and because I love it) which has a now vintage/period correct Blaupunkt headunit in which has a tape deck and aux input but no bluetooth, and Im not going to buy a new stereo just so I can play stuff via bluetooth - so yes buying a new cable is cheaper than a new stereo and would be the lesser of two evils but its the faffing around between cables and phone while driving that would be annoying but what about my headphones - and a stereo jack to lighting connecter will look like arse sticking out a centimetre and a bit from the bottom of a phone and would be awkward in your pocket if you try to sit down and how long until you lose it ? Scrapping the headphone jack on the 7 just doesn't make sense to me yet, that's all

Not quite.

The Cupertino Behemoth... Knows exactly how to play it's customers.

Apple's true expertise is milking every last shekel out of those of us that buy their toys

I am sticking with my 6S+ but I don't get why people keep saying old design. Unless one of those people who seeks attention and want everyone to immediately be able to distinguish that you have the latest and greatest. Just buy it if you like it. The average person puts their device in a clunky case anyway.

I see a phone body like a computer case. Once I find something that I like. Over time I'm more concerned about updating the internal components than the shell.
