Well, the SE is a solid phone and the A9 + 12MP Camera isn't in dire need of updating.

I love my SE more than any phone before it, but I do notice a screen quality downgrade from my iPhone 6. If the iPhone 8 is as amazing as the rumors claim, I may jump on it. Funny thing is, I was using a 7 in the store a few weeks ago and it felt HUGE. I never felt like that going from a 4S to a 6, but I thought I was holding a 7 Plus!

But humans can adapt pretty well, within a week I'd be used to it. But I do really love my SE. I which Apple would make a flagship 4" phone.

I see they are milking it for every penny they can get out of it, just like the previous MacBook Pross
The SE is essentially the iPhone 6S internals in a 5S body at a bargain price. I paid $400 for my 64GB SE contract-free (now it's down to $350). I don't see how that is "milking" it.

A common complaint that I hear about the SE is that, "It is visually indistinguishable from the 5S, how will people know that I have a new phone?". For those who want an iPhone that looks like the latest, ante up and buy the 7. Fashion has its price. :)

I'd love to the SE get a price cut in 1H 2017. It is a fine phone with good specs for 2017 because of the CPU. I love the form factor. If my 6S were to be dropped/lost I'd definitely consider the SE over the 7. And if such a sad event were to happen in, say March 2017, I'd most likely buy the SE to tide me over until the 8 gets released.

That said, a price cut would be acknowledgement of price of competitor products and it would grow the Apple user base.
Apple already dropped the price on the SE by $50 this year.

I went from an iPhone 4 to a Sharp Aquos Crystal (bezel-less phone) and now back to iPhone with the SE. It has everything that was great about the 4 but more of it (where it is better to have more) and less of it (where it is better to have less).

Battery life on this thing is insane. On a 6.5 hour cross-country trip I spent the entire time watching movies (my 12.9 iPad Pro was WAY too big for the tray tables). Started the trip with 91% battery remaining, when I landed at my destination... 73% (or thereabouts)

The camera on this takes stunning photos.

The SE is a rare instance where Apple stuck with a classic design. I'm sure that it was primarily driven by financial reasons (rather than for design) but I'm glad they did. I plan on keeping my SE for quite a while, hopefully they'll still offer an iPhone with the same design (but updated internals) when I need to replace it.

I have an SE (which I got after trading in my 6+) and I LOVE it. I hope they keep this same shape and size and refresh it otherwise I may never upgrade ever again.

I'll never go bigger than this ever again. It's such a practical size, it doesn't need a case because it's not slippery, and I can go running with it! There's absolutely no incentive to upgrade for me (although I do wish it was bigger than 64GB but I manage just fine).

then i just hope that they release a flagship iPhone in a 4 inch size during this September.
That doesn't seem likely even though a smaller phone is more convenient in certain situations. I'm using the 6th gen iPod touch for phone calls while at home because I don't need my 7 plus for that. Additionally, since I'm not using the iPhone directly, I can leave it charging while I use the iPod and headphones to make calls. This way long phone calls don't waste the iPhone battery and my head doesn't get radiated. When I leave the house my iPhone battery remains at 100% no matter how long I talk.

If they would do a bigger version of this exact hardware , they would be on to a hit I think. Feels so good in the hands and keeping the thickness, which is still thin, would mean way better battery life.

I know a lot of people who are happy with their iPhone SE. As of right now, the phone is plenty powerful. A price-drop might be a good idea for 2017.

The current SE handles everything just fine and can probably carry on happily until the spring 2018. Looking at Apple's current releases, which seem to be all about driving the prices up, it is unlikely they will release the new 4" iPhone in the autumn 2017 alongside their new "amazing & flagship" = expensive models, as the smaller (and cheaper) one with reasonable specs could easily be more popular for many people.

Don't think we will ever see a se upgrade

It was a test balloon to see how the market reacts without investing too much and of course to fill an obvious void in the product line

I guess iPhone x or whatever they'll call it will come in 3 screen sizes all of them of the same bezel less design

Very nearly bought one of these when I downsized from a 6S Plus, but chose the iPhone 7 instead.

I hope they continue to produce a smaller sized phone beyond 2017. Either by offering three physical sizes or slimming down the bezels of the other two handsets. I'm not one of those guys who has a hard-on for wafer-thin bezels, so I'd be happy with the choice of three.

I always figured it was a one-off. Kind of like the 5c was.
I absolutely love mine. And like others say, it is the better case design.
My 'hope' is that the iPhone 8 will simply be (more of less) edge to edge 4.5ish screen, which would then fit it into a body approximating the size of the iPhone 5 body.
Then I will finally be able to walk off into the sunset.

The other possibility is that Apple just comes out with the Phone 8 in three sizes. SML MED LRG.

As a parent with small kids, it's all about the camera for me. As a male, it's all about the pocketabilty. I must be in a minority demographic. I might have just made up a word.

Reaching to the top of a phone the size of the 6/7 or especially the plus models to push the power button is just not comfortable for most people's hands. This is why literally no phone larger than 4" has it there. I've never had a problem with hitting the volume at the same time. My natural grip on the phone when pressing the power button with my thumb has my index finger on the back of the phone and my other fingers well below the volume controls. I think this is how the phone is meant to naturally fit in the hand of a right handed person. Only if I grip it in my left do I find that when pressing the power with my index finger my thumb rests on or near the volume, but I can still easily press the former without pressing the latter.

The problem occurs when:

1. Holding the phone in my right, I try to press volume (I naturally do this with my index finger, especially for the up volume button), at the same time I often unintentionally press the power with my thumb.

2. Holding the phone in the left hand, when I try to press the volume buttons (with my thumb), my index finger unintentionally presses the power.

Whenever I should reach the up volume button the way you say is natural (thumb of the left hand or the middle finger of the right hand [since you say your index finger on your right hand is behind the phone]) then, in such hand position, I can also perfectly well reach the top of the phone with my index finger (of the hand that is holding the phone).

So, I insist putting the power button on the side is a non sense and it's the thing that drove me crazy on an android phone I had for a while as a second phone. Back then I thought: what idiot can put the power button here. One iPhone generation later, Apple joined the idiots ;-).

Apple supports devices fully for about 3 years before that support starts to fade. That keeps the SE in the lineup until 2018 before needing a replacement.

Since Apple put the 6S SoC and cameras in the SE, its performance is good for a while.

Random thought, but it's interesting that the SE has very similar internals as the 6s, but it still has a headphone jack with 27% less area inside. One of their excuses for removing it on the iPhone 7 was that they needed the space, but they were somehow able to keep it on a smaller SE.

After you have some coffee think some more on this. Hint: the iPhone 7 internal changes were very different than the SE, i.e., new larger Taptic Engine, new second speaker, larger battery, water resistant, etc. If the next gen SE is going to have these improvements, then something has to change to make room, e.g., removing the legacy 3.5mm port

Personally, I'd jump on an upgraded SE in a heartbeat. Just give me an option for 128 GB of storage. Throw in the new Touch ID for and I'll be very happy! Adding OIS would be the icing on the cake.

iPhone 7 innards would be a nice touch; I just have no desire for a larger phone.
I (personally) wouldn't see any reason to upgrade. other than for a larger screen in a smaller package. I could never use up 128GB on my phone. I griped about Apple using the older Touch ID before I bought SE. But now feel my gripe was unfounded. What I would upgrade for is 3D-Touch. That and also "Reachability" (not sure if that is HW or SW, frankly). It should be on every iOS device, regardless of screen size.

I'm so sick of Apple's new "we want you to buy said device so we're going to make it the only option" policy. They've been doing this a lot lately. Just give us the products we want, dang it!

"New" policy? Limited choice has been Jobs/Apple's philosophy since day 1.

Idk. Where The port was there is now a piece of plastic. The engine could be reduced and have it fit the jack on the case in same/another space.

I hope it is not a one-off. BTW, I think there is a place on the market for an updated 5c also. I find it completely inappropriate/weird to buy a metal phone for a kid (say, for my niece who is 9 years old). Still I would prefer that she had an Apple device (e.g. for iMessages compatibility), but of course it should not cost a fortune and it should have enough power for the current iOS (which the 5c does not have).

Apple needs to do what is right across the line...

A flagship iPhone with flagship features spread over three different screen sizes.

I really don't understand why this is so difficult to comprehend.
It's really pretty simple. Apple segments its products to appeal to different buyers at different price and feature points. That results in greater total profits and better margins than if the only differentiator is size.
