Anyone's o2 3g sim card been activated yet? Still getting "no service" on my iphone 3g after 30+ hours. In the network selection settings, I see "O2 UK (3G)". I try and join and a screen prompt says, "restricted network".

Was it an upgrade or new order?

If it's an upgrade then make sure your using your original iphone sim.

If it's a new order then call o2 customer services to have it activated.

Upgrading customers should get instant service, also people buying from apple store should get instant service, so I guess it's probably a mix up on what sim card to use on a upgrade, or O2 having problems with new activation. Although I think their supposed to be done within 48 hours. I THINK. I'm not sure.

Pretty good scam you're trying there, but it's probably not the cleverest idea to be bragging about it in public.

But then, O2's lawyers wouldn't dream of monitoring iPhone internet forums looking for security holes, would they? Oh, wait...

Shall we run a sweep-stake on how much your fine will be? Winner gets your spare phone, OK?

Thanks for the advice, might edit previous post's.

Depends on where it was taken out in regards to activation - for instance the Apple store in Regent Street, London are awful for activations.

If you have to call o2 it'll be about 36 hours - provided it gets done.

just thought i'd post this even though i imagine most people will already probably now, you can check the apple website to see which stores will be getting stock in.

i checked and tomorrow 28/07 all the stores with have 8gb models and white 16gb models. only one store had black 16gb models, can't remember which one it was now.

No service could be exactly that - no service. O2's coverage is woeful in many places across the UK and it may help if you move to a different location to check if it's working.

Phoned O2 this morning, they said they had no details of my tariff from the carphone warehouse. They know I have an iphone 3g and can see it's phone number, but no other information relating to what tariff it is or billing etc.

So, I phoned the carphone warehouse and they said they are experiencing problems forwarding the relevant details to O2, and receive an error message from O2's end. Then I got the dreaded, "we will call you back to get this sorted, the guy who sorts it out isn't here".

I will be amazed if I get called back. I might phone back this afternoon to chase it up. I think it's simply an input error on their part and that's why O2 reject it. CPWH said it might take up to 48 hours to rectify and get the details to O2. If accepted, then it takes another 24 - 48 hours for O2 to activate the sim. So, all-in-all, the total time to get the iphone up and working could be a week. If I have no luck by next Monday, I will return the iphone to CPWH.

I have spoken to a number of O2 staff and they seem pretty annoyed at CPWH.

I just thought I would share this information for anyone else who is having problems with an iphone from the CPWH or is thinking of buying a iphone from the CPWH.

Managed to upgrade from my old iPhone to the new iPhone 3G on Saturday at the Southampton Above Bar O2 shop - I got the last 16GB one they had in stock that day (much to the annoyance of the friend I had gone into town with who had wanted to upgrade too!).

Process was very smooth though - I know some people were wondering about the details so I'll give you a brief overview of how it went for me...

In the shop I just had to tell the member of staff my phone number and some other details and he was able to pull up the account details to process the upgrade. I then just had to provide a Debit card and sign a form to renew the contract for a new 18 month period and of course pay for the handset (didn't need any other form of ID). That was it and the new iPhone was mine (i.e. no need to activate it in store).

Once at home I turned off my old iPhone and removed the SIM (using the ejector tool in the iPhone 3G box - it's in the little black cardboard packet) and transferred it to the new iPhone 3G and turned it on to be greeted by the "requires activation" screen, so I fired up iTunes and plugged it in and when the option appeared I selected restore from backup rather than use as a new phone - this basically copied everything that I had on my old iPhone to the new iPhone 3G (it did take a very long time though!). Once it was finished though my new iPhone 3G basically looked just like my old one (though one or two applications didn't seem to get copied over - I'm waiting for iTunes support to get back to me on that) and it worked straight away. Obviously this requires that you have backed up your old iPhone first - if you haven't then you probably want to do that before switching the SIM over.

Editing is a bit pointless when others have quoted what you said, you might want to beg them to edit their posts as well.

As for taking a new contract to get a white iPhone from the Apple store and then asking O2 to cancel the contract so you can use your existing iPhone contract, that worked for some but people are saying that O2 are saying 'no, please return the iPhone to the Apple store within 14 days and cancel the contract with them'. The odd one or two are getting through but on the whole O2 are not happy about it and are stopping others from doing it.

I travelled to Glasgow yesterday just so I could pick up a white iPhone (no Apple stores in Northern Ireland yet unfortunately). I called the day before to confirm stock and check what documentaion I would need etc. They arranged a 1hour 'personal shop' appointment so I would be guaranteed somebody would be available (a nice touch I might add!)

When I arrived at the store I was an hour early, but they had so many staff available that they went straight ahead and set up the iPhone contract etc. They didn't open the box as I opted to activate the iPhone myself in the pub over lunch (using the local WiFi hotspot). Very pleased with my first visit to an Apple store - very friendly and efficient! They have loads of White iPhones in stock along with 8GB ones, but very few (if any) Black 16GB ones.

I'm really glad I went out of my way to get the White iPhone, I like it a lot more than the black one.

Hi, I got my iPhone 3G today but was looking to give it as a gift on 8th August and i was wondering if there was a period of time you HAVE to activate the phone in after receiving it or placing your order???

Please respond soon!!

Didn't you have to sign up for a contract when you bought it? As far as I know it's not possible to buy the phone for someone else, the purchaser has to take out the contract and then pay for it for the duration of the service agreement.

I ordered it from CPW online and signed up for the contract. I am planning to give it to my son on his birthday but don't want to activate it via itunes until then (as it involves opening up the box etc.) I just want to know if there will be any problems with activation if i leave activation (via itunes) until that long

bit of a bump for UK (London) stock news

Hey guys, have decided I'm way overdue a white 16gb, was thinking of heading over to Regent Street Apple Store tomorrow. However just checked apple's online checker and it's red across the board, odd as this morning white stock was completely green!

Can someone let me know whether they succeeded in picking up a 16gb white today and whether the checker has gone indeed gone arse over tit?

thanks chaps

paul:)

Picked up a white 16GB today in the Apple Glasgow store. Staff were so helpful and I was given my phone to unbox and set up myself :)

the availability for tomorrow says that all the apple stores will have the 8gb and the white 16gb version, but only liverpool will have the black 16gb version. if they apparently ran out of white ones today this is a pretty fast turnaround, those chinese folks must be making them at alarmingly high rates!

i went to get mine today at one of the o2 shops in meadowhall, sheffield. they had the 'black' one (didn't ask which models though, so may have just been the 8gb) but no white ones, which is what i want. they said the apple store has white ones, but a friend of mine works in the o2 shop and can get me money off the iphone and contract so need to get it from there. he's gonna let me know when they've got some in.

It usually says that when they're updating the stock. All the Apple UK stores have 8gb and 16gb white (seems like a bad decision for them to make the white ones!) and liverpool has a black 16gb.

I'm getting tired of waiting for my PAC from vodafone, so might go and pick up a white 16 GB today, and just buy a case for it.

Anyone else think it might be useful if O2 actually updated their "as of opening time" stock availability list somewhere around opening time? Currently it updates late(ish) in the morning, so you either have to ring the shops anyway (surely making it a bit pointless having an availability list) or they'll probably have sold out of 16gb ones before anyone using the checker has a chance to get there.

Mind you, it's probably not accurate anyway. Imbeciles.

If they have so many spare prhaps they would be nice enough to give O2 some so the people upgrading can get it.

That would make sense. I wonder if Apple is going to discontinue the white one at some point, it seems like no one wants it. Saying that, I did see one today on the underground, but it could be a desparation purchase.
