Just to keep you all updated....

I'm now the proud new owner of an iPhone 3G !!!!!

Ordered yesterday via the Carphone Warehouse delivered 9.30 am this morning!!!

AWESOME!!

Was this an iPhone to iPhone upgrade? Is so can you describe the activation process please? ie. do you get a new SIM and if so how long does it take to transfer your phone number to the new SIM etc.

Thanks!

iPhone to iPhone upgrade, basically the new iPhone is delivered without a sim and you just swap your sim card into it!

Unlike the CPW guy said about using the new sim DOH!

just popped into the Glasgow Argyll Street o2 store. First guy I asked claimed there were no 16gb phones in, but another shouted over that they "had them in now."

10 minutes later I have a new phone.

I still think o2 suck, but my holiday is off to a good start.

And it pays to ask twice!

i went to all the carphone warehouses on oxford street. seems like they have lots of 8gb left. But no 16gb at all.

check again today. All the CPWs have received new stock this morning. Plenty of 16 and 8 gigs. I'm at one CPW right now trying to get mine. O2 seems to be screwing up again. For some reason no one at o2 is receiving the upgrade request from CPW to authorize my upgrade.

I had that problem yesterday. It took about an hour to get an approval to upgrade to an iphone tarrif.

How long does it take for the iphone sim card to activate? I got my iphone this morning from CPWH. O2 told me it will be about 24 hours before the sim activates. I just get "no service" at the moment.

o2 in Southend had a delivery today. Was so weird, standing in the shop with my other half waiting for his upgrade to go through, and within 10 minutes the whole shop was full of people wanting iPhones. It's almost like some subliminal message was sent out to the collective consciousness saying "iPhones in stock".

Has anyone heard anything about white ones being available for upgrade? Spoke to a couple of local O2 stores this morning, one knew nothing, the other heard "a rumour" they were getting them 3rd week in August.

Apple have made the white 16GB iphone an apple store exclusive only - so you can't upgrade to it. At least for the foreseeable future.

I think s/he already knows that

Yeah but was told in store that could be august - thats not true.

Apple are keeping the white one for their own stores - if it does change, it may be around christmas but it certainly wont be for a while.

Yes you can, just go sign another contract in the O2 store, and your current iPhone contract gets annulled and the new one from the apple store starts thus technically getting a upgrade. It's just a lil more hassle to do.

I understand what you mean but this was due to an issue with the gateway ordering system - stores were putting through upgrades as new orders. So contracts were getting changed over to upgrades - however this is now being phased out due to upgrades being put through correctly in store.

Also you cant sign the contract for a new order in an o2 store for the white 16GB - only at apple. you could take it out and ask for it to be changed from new order to upgrade but if anyone checks your order (and it will say white 16GB) then its perfectly legal to refuse to annull the existing contract as you purposefully took out a new order. The contract you sign in store ties you to this. and then you'll be left with 2 contracts!

Just a thought, could you order over the phone from carphone for a iPhone upgrade, then let all that process, then about a hour after thats processed go to a O2 store and get a upgrade on the same contract?

Here are some more details.

1. Carphone over the phone did send a request off to O2 and it passed.
2. When going to the O2 store I was successful at getting a upgrade as well.
3. Carphone said it should be delivered sim free on monday.
Carphone said i only need to stick my current sim card in it to work.

any ideas?

Yes I did do it if your asking, I was on a original iPhone contract and now have 2 upgrades on the same contract. Although when I went into the O2 store to get my iPhone they didn't notice that I had ordered a CPW upgrade as well on the same contract.

Fiendish to be sure - although CPW dont stock the white 16GB iphone so it doesn't really apply in this instance.

Both those iPhones ordered were black 16gb ones. Already got my one from O2, just waiting to see if I get one from carphone from the post. Havent had a call from carphone saying anything is wrong, so fingers crossed :p.

The long story,
(on friday at around 3pm)
phoned CPW and asked to upgrade to new iphone form my current iphone 2g. He sent a message off to O2 and said he would call me back. After 15 mins I was told I could upgrade, and all they would send is just the phone. Gave payment info and it was all fine, expected delivery for free on monday. (16GB Black)

Then about a hour later than that I went into a O2 store and they had stock of the phone I wanted. (16Gb Black). Then I went to the desk, gave details and they had no problems. Paid for phone, and left the store. Amazingly then had no idea I had upgraded earlier that day from CPW, even though CPW sent a message to O2. Soo, what do you think will happen on monday ? will I get another iPhone ?

And yes, my contract has been reset to another 18 months.

Should be fine - you'll most likely get the phone on monday as no-one wil proabaly notice. Although thats more through CPW being lazy and not putting your original order through straight away.

In regards to person before , if the existing contrct isn't annulled then there will be 2 contracts.

1 - 18 month new order - white 16GB
2 - existing 2G contract which might not be stopped. With say 7 months remaining (for example).

This could mean an overlap of 2 contracts for a length of time.

Suppose the existing one could be given to someone else - but if they dont pay or run up a bill of 5 grand it's in the account holders name and they are liable for payment and any missed bills appear on their credit rating.

I only upgraded twice basically because I found out O2 store local to me had stock after I rang CPW to upgrade. But the CPW I have 14 days to return it, same with the O2 one.

You cant return a handset upgraded at store, because you can see the handset before its ordered for you - there's no cooling off period.

which isn't great tbh.

Nope, apparently if you use the same details, and ring O2 customer services they will stop the other contract for you. You can ring O2 customer services and ask about upgrading at a apple store. They tell you to just buy another iPhone and get your account to only have 1 contract by something, I can't remember but they will tell you quite openly on the phone what.

Also I have seen the screen(application) that they use for Apple stores and O2 stores, theres basically 2 steps.

Registration, which both O2 and apple store do. (e.g billing details, age, id, and basic contract information, etc.)

Then actual contract setup (Not performed in apple store, but performed in O2 store). Hence why no activation in O2 store.

Although I have only seen a new setup in Apple store and a Upgrade setup in a O2 store.

I'm not disagreeing that this hasn't been getting done peviously - but most of the people doing the annullments/transfers of contracts are no longer doing this. so if its done soon then it might be OK - but over time it will be stopped.

Also Apple cant send a request for an upgrade because o2 stores wont do it for apple for some reason.

the actual process is -

take out a new order - call up and give the new number - when it's noticed as a new order and not an upgarde a request is sent to have the new order canx and the moved to the existing account.

It can be done i'm not disputing that but it's dependant on the person you speak to. When you call. Some will do it some wont.

In regards to the contract - Apple send a request for a tariff and contract to be activated.

Not too worried... Got 2 iPhones for a good price, and only Paid £60 for one of them and that has NO CONTRACT :D. And paying in full for another.

Basically, GETTING a iPhone 3g from carphone being sent(sim free)(£60 upgrade), and got one from the O2 store the proper way (e.g signing another contract and paying £60 as well)

If the carphone does extend my contract again it can be returned though, I was assured this on the phone, basically got 1 phone now. But it would be a bonus if the CPW one comes on monday as well.

If it was ordered over the phone with CPW then thats classed as 'distance selling' so there will be returns/cooloing off period. i believe its 7 Days for CPW.

update on uprading twice on the same account through 2 different shops, is a success at the moment, my contract was extended by 18 months as standard + 2 weeks. Not too much to ask for for another 3g iphone :D

Pretty good scam you're trying there, but it's probably not the cleverest idea to be bragging about it in public.

But then, O2's lawyers wouldn't dream of monitoring iPhone internet forums looking for security holes, would they? Oh, wait...

Shall we run a sweep-stake on how much your fine will be? Winner gets your spare phone, OK?
