i went to all the carphone warehouses on oxford street. seems like they have lots of 8gb left. But no 16gb at all.

I just got my 3g iphone today though CPW and it was very fast. I phoned on wednesday and asked if you can upgrae though them. they said yes and did it over the phone with no hassle.

so anyone waiting for the o2 website to update to get their iphone to 3g iphone upgrade then use CPW (you call the phone number for CPW sales).

Hi Loondondude,

I just tried this. The chap I spoke to was very helpful. He rang O2, and then rang me back and said that they had said no. He couldn't say why, but I am guessing its because I am an existing iPhone user.

any sign yet of the "considerably more stock" O2 is expecting today? Any white in it?

No on both counts.

The O2 retail stock website is a complete work of fiction. This morning I have been to 9 of the stores that supposedly have stock. 8 of them had no stock morning when opening and no stock delivered today. 1 of them had some limited stock delivered today (368 or 351 Oxford Street - I forget which - no 16Gbs left). Giving this false hope is worse than telling us nothing at all!

The seven store for reference (all in London) :-

Kings Road,
Kensington High Street (both)
Notting Hill Gate
Oxford Street (2 of 3)
Victoria Street

Surprised by the out of stock everywhere screenshots. If you don't want an upgrade and can get to Kingston go there...

Came back from Apple Centre Bentalls - (Kingston) this am. Seem to have a plenty of white 16gb and black 8gb left.

Got myself a white one. Took about 20mins with around a 40min wait (3 people in front of me all had credit check problems and were all buying 2 each!)

Very helpful bunch, chatty nice staff, completely different experience from an attempted online and failed purchase at Carphone Warehouse. (Agh! Cancelled my order without telling me by blaming a failed credit check (no problem anywhere with my credit - I've checked!) Rude and aggressive staff etc etc et )

Mine arrived from Carphone Warehouse this morning. Definitely worth the wait.

For those who have theirs already: After activating and syncing, I received a blocked call. I refuse to answer these, just because.

The thing is, I chose to take a new number, not transfer my old one, so nobody actually had the number at the time. Do O2 call all new activations or was it just something ... weird?

Expect more. Cold calls form insurance companies. A perk of buying from CPW.

Just to keep you all updated, CPW still have stock of 16Gb Black (White seems to be Apple only at the moment, and I had this confirmed by O2 earlier)

Called them at about 1.30 to upgrade my 1st gen iPhone, they took all my details and then had to get O2 to accept the upgrade. The salesperson said that this process was getting longer and longer so they would call me back, although the phone has been allocated to me.

They've just called back about one and half hours later, its all sorted paid for it, £10 quid for delivery tomorrow, and all I have to do now is wait!

They still have stock, but he did say that they were selling iPhones on pretty much every call!!!

I called them about 2:30, I'm at the "waiting to call me back stage". I was quoted a Monday delivery and assured that I had been reserved a 16Gb phone, still dubious...

...So you call up customer services and say "I'd like to make a complaint about the moron who sold me my phone and opted me in to third party communications without checking with me first, and oh, I'd like you to change my marketing preferences please."

Mine is on it's way tomorrow too. They had ~340 16Gb Black in stock when I finished ordering at about 4:45pm according to the person on the phone.

Took 3 hours to get it ordered as their systems were screwed up and it tried to order me 2 - and the 1per customer rule blocked the purchase!

i am an exsisting iphone user also. maybe the guy i got was extra helpful and did it for me.

It took me about 2 hours to order the 16gb iphone from Carphone Warehouse over the phone. It was taking so long the salesman gave me his direct line number, so I could phone him back later on after it had processed.

Anyway, the system was very slow retrieving my approval from o2 to upgrade. I also had to deflect the constant barrage of insurance offers from the CPWH salesman, very pushy indeed.

At least it's on its way and will be here tomorrow! Finally!

Mine eventually went through too.

My salesman was at one stage trying to push me into buying a screen protector! Because, apparently, "the iPhone screen is really easy to scratch, and with it being such a beautiful high-res screen, blah, blah, blah". I reminded him that he was doing an upgrade and I had had an iPhone since they first were released I was quite aware how hard wearing and scratch resistant the screen actually is.

He also failed to offer me the option of paying £10 for delivery tomorrow so mine is coming on Monday :(

So when buying from CPW do you get a new SIM or do you put the one from the old iPhone in? If they do send you a new SIM how long does it take to switch the old phone number to new SIM? Is it instant as part of the iTunes activation process?

Will let you know tomorrow if its here, delivery cost me a tenner so it better had be!!!

I had a good chat with the guy and basically told him I was there for the iPhone no extras.

According to the guy I spoke to, you basically just put the new iPhone into iTunes then activate it, as O2 already know your upgrading, there servers will activate the new iPhone and disconnect the old one, transferring the number...

Sounds great but I gotta see it first!:D

I went into the CPW on the way home from work in York. Asked the guy if they had any 16gig in stock. Answer was no.

i got talking to him and eventually got him to check the stock on the computer, and 200 16gigs had just been added to the system at the warehouse. He promptly reserved one for me.

After I had completed the transaction, he had a look to see how many were left and in the 5 minutes it took to reserve mine, the stock level went down to about 150.

Picking mine up from the store on Monday hopefully. :D

Yes, CPWH try and get you to buy everything under the sun. I just said I had ordered accessories from Apple. I also explained I had insurance which covered a phone, but he wanted me to buy it anyway! I just laughed and said why would I want two lots of insurance? and pay twice!

Anyhow, O2 told me today that you just pop your current O2 sim card in then connect to itunes. It should migrate your current O2 account to an iphone account. You should also be able to keep your number. He told me it can take up to 48 hours, however he said that was the absolute max amount of time. I will probably call O2 afterwards to double-check. I don't want to be billed for two different contracts.

So, O2's shambolic handling of this launch continues! After updating their website to say they had plenty of stock on the way due for today and they hoped to reopen online ordering around this time, existing iPhone owners get THIS slap in the face:

Thank you for your interest in iPhone 3G.

We have received additional iPhone 3G's from Apple and will continue to do so on a weekly basis. We are confident that all customers who want an iPhone 3G will get one by the end of the Summer.

For the foreseeable future, iPhone 3G's will only be available in our Retail stores (as well as Carphone Warehouse and Apple stores). We will continue to sell iPhone 3G's on a first come, first served basis to be fair to all customers.

Important information for existing iPhone customers looking to upgrade to the new 3G device

Existing iPhone customers are eligible for a special, early upgrade to the new 3G handset until 11th October, 2008. This can now only be done via an O2 Retail store. To find your nearest store click here.

We are sorry that we can't meet all demand as quickly as we'd like but we are sure that when you get your new iPhone 3G you'll agree it's been worth the wait.

We will continually update this page with more information.

So not only is there still no sign of online ordering (and no sign for the "forseeable future either") but it looks like existing iPhone customers can no longer upgrade in CPWH stores either. Still no news of when the white iPhone will be available (despite being told in an email from O2 customer support that they would be selling the white iPhone).

To be honest, what with all this mess and the disturbing reports of cracking cases, I might just stick with my existing iPhone after all. There isn't a killer app for GPS yet that I can see and 3G is a nice-to-have and nothing more. I was happy to upgrade for the simple fact that I could make the £99 back by selling my old phone but it seems that keeping my old iPhone might be a wise move!

Upgraded this morning at the Carphone Warehouse. Nice and easy, apart from having to stand around and wait 15 minutes for the credit check to be processed.
Glad it's done seeing as O2 seem to keep changing their mind on what to do every 5 minutes!

Ah, O2, you're sucking bad.

Still, to be fair my local store might have stacks of the things - I've not tried for over a week as I haven't been able to convince myself it's worth the bother ringing as it's so unlikely they'll have any 16Gb ones.

Hmm, I tried upgrading through carphone, process went fine, I had the heads up from O2, when the guy messaged them with my request, probably you got your details wrong. Other than waiting 15-20 mins for O2 to accept my request it was easy and quick.

Anyone able to log into their O2 web account for checking minutes and so on. I'm having problems at 3:08AM, it just loads but doesn't load anything when I enter the login details and press go.

???

Just to keep you all updated....

I'm now the proud new owner of an iPhone 3G !!!!!

Ordered yesterday via the Carphone Warehouse delivered 9.30 am this morning!!!

AWESOME!!
