Once you signed, and then opened box, Verizon has no clue if you are lying or not. Always, always, always, open box first before signing off to Fed EX or any other delivery company. By signing, you are accepting responsibility and the burden of proof is now on you. You will have to deal with Fed Ex and make a claim with them. I wish you luck.
I would have thought the same as you. Delivery people also seem constantly in a hurry so I'd say there's not much scope for checking.
I would find out where FedEx's nearest premises are and go down there with the packaging, to point out that the tape has obviously been replaced.
I would just like to get some opinions here... and to vent my frustrations about Verizon's customer service.
I ordered the new iPhone 5s and signed for and received the package from Fedex. I opened up the box and found no phone in it, just the paperwork. I noticed later that the box had a second layer of tape on it, different from the original, so someone probably opened it up, took the phone, then re-taped the box.
Verizon determined that the theft occurred while it was with FedEx and its no longer they're problem. They essentially took my money and said that if I want to be reimbursed then I have to deal with FedEx myself. On top of that, if I want to the new iPhone I have to reorder it and be put in the month long wait list.
Am I wrong in thinking that Verizon should take more responsibility in this, or at least be more helpful. In my opinion, if your shipping company screws up then you should deal with that company and in the meanwhile fulfill your responsibility and get the product to your customer. Opinions?
OP have you contacted FedEX yet?????
Would this thing not have be weighed at some point? When they initially did so what was the weight? Quit complaining about Verizon and get on FedEX.

Whatever the package is, it becomes the property & responsibility of the shipper. Verizon doesn't own a shipping company. They did their job, now responsibility falls on the shipper. Verizon has no responsibility.
Where is this stated in their disclaimer? I don't see it.
Sucks to hear such a story, but cannot be surprised when USP and FedEx drivers busting their asses for a wage comes into contact with so many packages carrying $600 bricks. It's bound to happen, unforch.

Yes. Once I gave up on Verizon I contacted FedEx. They're still investigating. They have to question the driver or something. I was told that the weight when it left Verizon and when it arrived at the local FedEx facility were the same, so someone here probably took it.
Wouldn't it be obvious though? The weight of the iPhone and its box would be weighing it down. Wouldn't you notice it would be lighter than normal before signing for it?
Someone here as in? The neighborhood?
----------
Not necessarily. When I got my 5's last year they were incredibly light. It didn't even feel like anything was in the box.
Someone here as in? The neighborhood?
Someone either at the FedEx facility or the driver. Someone replied here that UPS employees know when iPhones are being shipped out, so its likely the thief was an employee.

That is true, when the UPS guy delivered my iPhone this morning he knew exactly what it was, how, I don't know (there were no Apple markings on the box).

I suspect my Gold 32GB ATT iPhone 5s was stolen as well. It was scheduled for delivery on 10/1. On 9/30 I used UPS My Choice to change the delivery to Hold for Customer Pickup. I work just down the road from the UPS Customer Center and figured I would pick it up at lunchtime on 10/1.
At 7:56 AM on 10/1 the tracking information indicated it was ready for pickup, so around noon I strolled in to get it. I waited an hour while they attempted to find it. It was not located. I was told they spoke with the clerk that pulled the will calls that morning and he said he put it in the will call basket. It was no longer there, though. I was told they would keep looking and call me when they locate it. I stopped back by after work and it had still not turned up. I checked again this morning: no go.
So, I called Apple and told them what was going on. They opened an investigation, began processing my replacement, and gave me a free leather case. The worst part is my replacement phone appears to be stuck in the "Shipping in October" group, which looks like I got pushed to the back of the line. I will call Apple back if I don't see any movement on the shipping very soon. At any rate, I'm very disappointed in the situation at UPS. They all KNOW these are iPhones in these boxes. Either they were extremely careless with a high value item, or someone stole the phone.

they do. when they delivered my moms iPhone 4 he said, enjoy your iPhone.

why not just wait for them to deliver it? you went in around noon, you might of had it before then?
yes I know what they allow. personal preference, I avoid messing with any shipping re-routing in all. I get it shipped my work so our receiving department will sign for it and I can track it. By the time I get the email saying it's been delivered, i'll walk to the back and pick it up sometimes before they're able to log it in as a received item.I was not at home to sign for it, and even if I was, UPS usually delivers to my home around 3 PM. They allow customers to hold for pickup for a reason.
