AT&T confirmed or Verizon possibility?

So I think everyone here can agree the iPhone 4g is pretty much guaranteed to be released on AT&T in the near future. Verizon, on the other hand, is quite the opposite. I am currently on a family plan with Verizon and my girlfriend has AT&T. I have been interested in buying an iPhone for quite some time now and was very excited to hear of the new iPhone. That said, my girlfriend said I could use her account to get an iPhone (she is eligible for an upgrade) and we would just swap phones and phone #'s (basically I would replace her on her plan and she would do the same on mine...just switch places).

My question is, should I consider using my gf's account and go ahead and upgrade to the new iPhone when it comes out (hopefully in June) or wait and see what Verizon does regarding the iPhone within the next few months?

Up to you, apparently only you can see into the future

4G??? One thing is for sure..... by this time next year, you should have all your questions answered. Anything else, at this point, is purely speculation, and you shouldn't take ANY advice on here for things that aren't released yet. Just my .02 worth.

I heard the 5th gen doesn't require a carrier. The unlimited data and talk lines are 100% free. Texts, however, will cost $20/month for unlimited :(

This post is about on par with all the Verizon posts, unsubstantiated

Tech manufacturing analyst reports make it clear that there is no Verizon iPhone in the next couple months. Q4 2010 earliest, and later more likely. Verizon plans to have its 4th generation LTE wireless data network running across the country in 2011, so I would be somewhat surprised if they released an iPhone in Q4 2010 that could only use Verizon's EVDO 3G network, which is tested by tech magazines to be slower than AT&T 7.2Mb HSPA, much slower than Sprint's Wi-Max network for which devices like the HTC Evo 4G are already coming out. Also much slower than T-Mobile's 21Mbps HSPA+ network that they plan to have covering 185 million people by the end of 2010. Probably much slower than the 14.4Mbps HSPA+ network that AT&T plans to roll out covering 250 million people by the end of 2010.

So if I had to bet, I would say LTE iPhone on Verizon with 1H 2011 launch.

Yeah, that would be crazy....almost as crazy as rolling out an Edge device when everyone has 3G! Oh...wait a tic....

OP, while nobody can tell at the moment, it seems unlikely that there will be a Verizon iPhone this year. I'd say give it another year.

Considering that ATT suddenly raised their ETF to 375$, i would say that a Verizon iPhone may be in order soon. I mean, why raise it unless they were expecting to lose customers to a Verizon based iPhone? This just makes them stay another 2 years, unless you wish to pay that ridiculous amount. Just saying.

I'll give you that is a good point, but the example I was thinking of was that the iPhone 3GS was a "launch device" for AT&T's 7.2Mbps upgrade. So I guess thats a point each way.

In any case, Wimax and HSPA+ devices are already out. LTE will be out by then, and Verizon's network will be ready... so I still think that it would be LTE.

Why I love the Iphone but bought a droid..

Ok so I had the iphone 3GS... best phone on the market and sold it :(.. y  ?? the new iphone 4g is coming out so I canceled my service with AT&T and I am free for a possible Iphone 4G on Verizon.. however that may not happen till June 7 2010 - July 2011 (worst case scenario).

unfortunately though, Verizons network is MUCH better then AT&T and the 1st purpose of a phone is to be a phone. So i bought a moto droid to put on verizon (without a contract of course) for when the new iphone comes out.. and having used the droid.. it doesnt compare.. so right now I have to wait for the best.. which is Iphone 4G on Verizon.. Cant wait lol but damn I hate waiting..

yea pretty much.. if AT&T's network would've been as good as Verizons I would still be with them.. but I get 1 bar at work with AT&T (NO 3G or EDGE). With Verizon someone in my office has 4 bars with 3G.. damnnnn... So until Iphone goes to verizon, no iPhone 4 me.. :(

That was originally the reason I left. I owned every generation of iphone but went kept going back to verizon after realizing that AT&T still didn't get their stuff together. I think I kept the first gen iPhone for a full year though, besides that, it was a back and forth game (you'd think I'd learn after the first time).

Theres a lot of possibilities with android though. I'm sure the droid will grow on you. I have a blackberry now and I'm getting ready to go android but to be honest I'll probably still buy the new iPhone and end up burning myself once again.

I had AT&T 13 years ago and swore that I would never go back. I never had 1 month go buy where I had to call and complain about the varying fees. I switch to T-Mobile and owned a number of phones (including Blackberries and 2 Android phones). But I wanted an iPhone so bad, I decided to switch...and I'm very happy I did. No more issues with different fees and the customer support blows T-Mobile out of the water. The only thing I found better, was the 3G coverage in my area. Much better on T-Mobile (again...in my area).

in my opinion T-Mobile is the worst of the carriers.. of course, you get what you pay for. Im on Tmobile now before I make my switch to Verizon, and In my room i get dropped calls all the time at home.. At work?? no Service.. When it comes to text messages: Ive sent messages only to have ppl tell me that I never sent them.. and as for receiving messages.. Ive had ppl send me messages at 10am and received them at 2pm.. :( ..garbage... my location is Central Jersey... I think the important thing is for iphone to go to ALL carriers; that way people have choice and could pick whats best for them..

order of quality..

Verizon > AT&T > T-Mobile..

how do you really know cell carriers data and voice capacity?

I just tried the verizon droid for a month. Cute but no iphone. Battery life as short as 5 hours. Im using a samsung full keyboard unit with metro pcs no surprise $40 per month phone bill. My question is that AT&T being the first iphone carrier has been overwhelmed with new and different user data patterns. Are they getting better? Also, phone companies always talk about faster but they don't talk about capacity? Im wondering if there is a relationship between number of cell towers and number of iphone users, short of 1 to 1, which offers better full time service. Now thats an idea maybe the next thing cellphone carriers will do is to force us to buy our own antenna to offer better service. I guess they sort of do.

So i bought a moto droid to put on verizon

Which Droid? The HTC incredible droid is blowing the doors off of any android based phone at the moment (other then the desire and evo). Its a great phone and verizon is unable to keep them on the shelf. they're flying off.

I was in the verizon store checking it out, and in a matter of minutes, they sold (rather ordered) 3 phones from walk ins. I stated ordered because everything is on back order.

I opted for the Nexus because its rootable (they've not been able to root the incredible), I'm also not wanting to leave the AT&T network yet, i.e., ETF and finally I should get Froyo on the Nexus before the incredible.

I'm tempted by the Incredible after learning I can get a 20% discount and having a 1 year contract only (only $30 more for the phone). Could give me the chance to play with the droid while waiting for real 4G possibly next summer.

What does rooting mean and what does it allow the nexus 1 to do?

Verizon can keep up with it but there is a shortage of AMOLED screens by samsung which is the reason they can't keep it in stock.

I returned mine a few days after having it. The battery life was beyond horrible compared to any phone I've ever used. My receiption was horrible as well. I was getting one to no bars of service next to my blackberry tour. Maybe I had a bummed unit but theres a lot of chatter about these issues on forums, especially the battery. The motorola Shadow will be out in august so its either wait for that or get the moto droid now.
