It's $10. People are paying $649/$749/$849 for an unlocked iPhone. You can pay $209/$309/$409 for the same thing. Your phone becomes more valuable instantly.

Why are people unlocking their iPhone 5 arent most of you on 2-year contracts?

Because although unlikely a dispute may arise with your current carrier. In that case one may choose to pay the ETF and go with another carrier and not have to deal with getting the device unlocked in a timely manner. Or one may choose to stop paying their carrier due to a dispute. Legal matters can take a considerable amount of time to settle. Again getting timely service from another carrier would be key.

Who knows how long these eBay or online unlocks will be available. The carriers may decide to shut them down. From what I can tell this ability is a very recent thing. Hell the carriers could technically re-lock devices but who knows. $6.29 in my case (old 4s) isn't a lot to fret about If that happens. It buys some flexibility.

Not anymore once this catches on, at least for used phones. If this ability stays it won't matter if the phone is locked or unlocked. Buyers will just pay the small amount of money after receiving the phone to get it unlocked. The unlocked phone price premiums will adjust all the way down and equalize with locked phone prices.

That's true. but I don't plan to sell my 4S anytime soon - at least not before it's replaced. but when it gets replaced, i'll have signed a new contract hence permitting the unlockability through AT&T.

so even though it's only $10, it's almost the same as throwing $10 in the trash for me, i think.

If you never plan on using it outside the US either then yes it would be pointless for you.

I keep getting different results from different IMEI checker sites, I guess the only way to really check is to put in a different sim and see if it works.

I have never tried this in the past, what is the process? Get a sim that fits (or make it fit by cutting it down) and then put it in the phone? Is there anything else? iTunes? Power off/on?

Sorry for the basic question just never tried before.

Just Tested My Unlock!!

Wanted to make sure mine was indeed unlocked before my trip to Ireland in 2 weeks. BOOM!!!:D:D

Sorry for the horrible quality, had nothing to take the photos with other than my MacBook Air.

Did you have to sand down a micro SIM?

Unlocked for the heck of it.

I travel out of the country at least once or twice a year so its well worth it.

I got the unlock from fusion, and he was extremely quick! I sent the ebay link to a few friends and family members to unlock their iphones as well.

Nope, walked into a T-Mobile store right near my work and asked for a PAYG MicroSIM. Activated it and put $10 on it for 30 min of talk time and walked out. Threw it in and got a Welcome to T-Mobile text message. Made a few calls and everything went super smooth.

So paid $6+ for a 4s unlock from eBay last night. Received email response that the unlock was done. Checked this site and it still says "Locked".

I'll check another site or two and also do the iTunes restore I guess

Here's the eBay link I used for the unlock.

Sorry, I forget...you have a 4S?

I bought my 32GB iPhone 5 on launch day for $299.99 (fully subsidized price) and haven't paid for or requested an unlock, but I just checked my imei at http://dev.mk/iphone-simlock-status-imei-checker/ and it says that my phone is unlocked...

Now, the story behind my purchase is very convoluted (I called AT&T last Wednesday asking if I could get my upgrade eligibility bumped up for the iP5 and a rep told me to add a line to my account to get the subsidized price and then he would call me back and cancel the new line and waive the ETF. After dozens of calls and hours on the phone talking to reps who said he had lied, I finally talked to someone earlier this week who honored what he said and canceled the new line, transferred the iP5 to my old line and waived the $325 ETF) Maybe sometime during that process one of the reps inadvertently unlocked my phone?

Just checked my unlock status on iphoneox.com and it says my iP5 is Locked. All of the warranty, activation, and support info is correct. I guess, like others are saying, it is safe to say that the dev.mk site is not accurate.

Yeah, but iPhoneox.com also shows my confirmed unlocked iPhone 5 as locked. I don't think any of the websites are accurate regarding the iPhone 5 yet.

Edit: Just got an e-mail saying my 4S couldn't be unlocked becuase it was still under contract (on my second line I guess). Oh well, CS already unlocked it suckas!!! :p

I confirm that the seller Unlock Fusion (Ebay) is working perfectly. I'm on T-Mobile now with custom cut nanosim

Did the iTunes restore on the old 4s tonight. Got the Unlock message so it's good to go.

My 5 is now unlocked. Will get a TMo sim soon to test it out.

Unlock Fusion - making a ton of money from MacRumors members, I bet!
