I’m hoping come this Friday that Xfinity Mobile will be an eligible carrier for purchase on Apple’s website and that this upgrade program applies as well.
I'm still waiting for Xfinity Mobile to get wifi calling activated! Also BYOD should be instituted since I know iPhones & Samsung Galaxy S8 s work fine even when not purchased from Xfinify. S/B selling sims.

Just curious... anyone know why TMob is singled out here? I mean this is an Apple program. Why would carrier matter?
From what I've read there is a billing system issue and Apple can't access some part of it they need to do it all online.

For each transaction they still need to verify your carrier account info to replace the phone on your account.

I checked a few weeks ago and saw this was posted on their site. I didn't realize that it wasn't the case last year.

Because T-Mobile's billing systems are so ancient, Apple is unable to verify customer accounts. T-Mobile forces Apple to use an iPad app to do so resulting in the "in store only" experience.

Yeah this is why it's a total mess. 3 colors times 3 phones (this year) times 4 carriers times 3 sizes. I can't believe any store ever had what you wanted.

Online is MUCH better way to go!

I hope T-Mobile customers will be able to reserve phones like Apple had everyone do last year. I don't mind having to complete the process in an Apple store, but not being able to pre-order/reserve a new iPhone is going to suck.

I am an IUP member who just submitted credit freezes with the big 3 agencies as a security precaution against the Equifax hack. Am I going to have trouble upgrading?

Call the credit card company you plan on using. Tell them exactly what you are going to do. They will be able to tell you if the transaction will go through or not. I'm not even sure what you mean by "credit freeze" with all 3 agencies. Does that mean EVERYTHING on your credit report gets frozen? Car loans? Mortgage? credit cards? etc. How does that work? But again, a simple call to the CC company will get you your answer.

Freezes mean just that. Anything that needs a credit check will fail without you unfreezing it (so crooks can't open fraudulent accounts). This also is a pain when you want to make a time sensitive transaction. :D

If you are in the IUP you have AppleCare and they just charge you the $29 for a screen fix or $99 for anything else.

This assumes they decide it needs to be fixed. I don't know what the perfection threshold is!
I'm an Apple certified tech - they will make you pay for the fee to get it repaired since it will be considered accidental damage.

So can TMobile customers still “preorder” at midnight online? Or just not do the mail trade in? I have no problem going in to pick up my phone and trade it out. I just want to be able to get a preorder in online at midnight as a TMobile customer?

Gazelle is running out of iPhone 7s right now. That seems to suggest to me that this TouchID fiasco is going to backfire on Apple. The iPhone X is simply not practical in a lot of situations without TouchID. The sooner TimMAY realizes this, the better for Apple. Furthermore, what worries me is that Samsung's business model is to F with Apple's supply chain and make sure they cannot achieve what they want to. Steve Jobs would NEVER let this happen.

Finally, I'm simply not an OLED or AMOLED fanboy. I realize the colors are brighter, but every study so far shows OLED screens don't last as long and grow dimmer over time unlike LCDs. I see no cost-benefit analysis in investing $1000 in an even more disposable device than the previous one.

Right, but does a slight scratch on the back mean you pay $99? That sort of thing is the question. What's 'normal wear and tear'?

It sounds like you have to do store pickup to do the device swap on your account since that's the part that can't be done automatically, right? And same for the trade-in, of course.

On the screen, what's 'over time'? If you are in the IUP and upgrade every year, I would hope the screens are stable for a year or two or so!

Jury is still out on face recog, I agree.

That's normal, it would have to be significant damage like major case damage, dents, screen cracks, housing separations, etc.

Basically anything they'd say "we have to fix this in order to repair the phone". I.e phone works fine, but you have a major dent in the corner causing the screen to lift up. That would be a $99 fee. Hope that makes sense!

So, I have a screen crack that literally showed up out of nowhere. Straight line. No spidering of the glass at all. Top right corner of the phone. No impact marks whatsoever.

From what I can tell, this should be covered when I iUP?

I actually got my 7Plus via the upgrade program on an ATT line but now I'm T-Mobile. If I can't upgrade the phone online, can I just purchase for a store pickup and then workout the details of the upgrade when I pickup? If my wife wants to join the program can she do the same? So I order 2 phones for pickup and deal with the IUP at the store?
Yes!

As someone who switched to T-Mobile a few months ago and has to drive two hours to the nearest Apple Store and was really excited until the end of this article, why can't we upgrade? These devices are unlocked. Couldn't I just order a Verizon one and swap the sim? This is dumb.

If I remember correctly, the issue last year was that, in order to upgrade, there had to be stock available for pickup in your chosen flavor when you went through the iUP checkout process-- and there was initially some "in-store pickup" stock available to reserve via pre-order-- but of course in stock inventory was quickly consumed by not just iUP customers but regular customers as well, creating a great deal of uncertainty as to when iUP customers would be able to upgrade (since, after the preorder inventory sells out, it's the hassle of checking the web site every single day for new inventory to see if they have the phone you want).

I hope they handle this differently this year for T-Mobile customers since they still cannot do the mail in program-- if nothing else, treat it like a regular web order that's being shipped to the Apple store for pickup. That way you can get your order in the online queue but still take care of the upgrade business in store.

I’m in the exact same boat as you are. I am going to just pre-order a Verizon version of the iPhone. Let’s hope it’s not locked to Verizon’s network! Though, I’ve heard that all Verizon iPhones are unlocked. Just not sure about the new ones though.

If it is hairline, no obvious point of impact, single crack and no shattering or spidering.

You can get it fixed for free, or worst case, the $29 if you go the Apple Store now (before you end up sending the phone back in) and having them replace it. This way you don't have to worry about it when you ship it back. Screen repairs are done within a few hours after your appointment.

Absolutely! But this wasn't an option last year. I didn't mind because I got to the Apple store at 6am and was 1st in the "pre-ordered" line. Store opened at 8 and I had my phone and was back to work at 9am. Still praying that I can get it shipped to my office though. Nothing better then seeing our daily UPS truck pulling up iPhone delivery days.
Nothing beats being there in person.

Yea that seems to be one of the downfalls of the service. Can’t imagine why you couldn’t BYOD.

Tmobile guys/gals.... please join me in emailing john@tmobile.com and tweeting @JohnLegere about this iUP hot garbage. Why, of all four major carriers, is Tmobile treated differently? ESPECIALLY since the whole POINT of the iUP program is to be UNLOCKED and CARRIER-FREE.

Thanks, all

I tried doing that last year. You'll be told that they have to verify that you have an account with Verizon (or whatever other carrier's phone you'd like to purchase). If you're really desperate, you can open up a new account, but if you're in the US, be aware that you'll be hit with a hard credit check.

Edit - I don't know if MR is confirming that it's the same this year around, though, as it looks like they're just using what's already in place.

Edit x2 - Whoops, recalled incorrectly. I pre-ordered a Verizon phone last year, not T-mobile. Took out the incorrect info.
