There is no word of this, you unfortunately won't know until Apple launches the site tomorrow. Since they made changes for the mail in program they may have changed to the pickup option as well.
Thanks

So, as a Tmobile customer, currently on iUP and ready for an upgrade... On preorder night/morning, I would....

- Preorder for full price
- Say "Pick up at Apple Store"
- On September 22nd (or whenever), just walk in and get the phone.. then..
- RETURN the phone and immediately say "I would like to buy this phone with iUP"

Does this sound about right?

Noooo. They won't let you return that phone and then buy it back. Essentially once the phone is returned, it is used - they can sell that same SKU again.

What you're better off doing is hoping that Apple lets you reserve in store tomorrow for pickup. But since they can't verify upgrade eligibility with T-Mo or whatever the case, they likely won't offer that option since scalpers will likely take advantage.

I live in Canada but I’m moving the the US and I work in Mexico. I want to use my upgrade plan but I am still on an iPhone 3GS. I was with AT&T but I changed careers last week and I am grandfathered in to my data plan. I just froze all my credit cards and joined the witness protection program. I have a P.O. Box and am on the terrorist watch list. Will I have a problem upgrading my phone?

Really hoping for a T-Mobile iUP. If not, I guess I'll be purchasing full price.

Or try and not return and just do the T-Mobile iUP in store at time of pick up

Tmobile guys/gals.... please join me in emailing john@tmobile.com and tweeting @JohnLegere about this iUP hot garbage. Why, of all four major carriers, is Tmobile treated differently? ESPECIALLY since the whole POINT of the iUP program is to be UNLOCKED and CARRIER-FREE.

Thanks, all
Done deal!

If you reserve a phone at full retail, they won’t allow you to switch it to iUP when you get to the store to pick it up. They claim it’s because that would require a “return” and the system doesn’t respond fast enough on launch day to allow for “returned phones” to be turned right back around and sold, even if unopened. They claim it can take hours for that phone’s status to be updated and allow for it to be reactivated.

Fascinating. So even a phone that is still in a sealed package-- hasn't been opened or touched physically-- is considered used if someone brings it in to return it?

this guy is wrong. i did exactly this with my current phone

New Zealand is not looked after by Apple very well. We don't have an Apple Store so we don't have the option to Trade up to a new iPhone. Even Apple Care in New Zealand does not give great service. I wait until the New Zealand Apple Care office is closed then I ring in and get Apple Care America. They look after me very well.

If we're not allowed to use the upgrade program as designed then apple needs to make some concessions or else they sold us a lie. I have a feeling you will be able to switch to iUP if you raise enough hell. In fact, we'll have some time between preorder and pickup to raise the issue on social media and get mass preapproved from higher tier customer support to do this exact thing.

If you bought at launch you should have recently made your 24th payment and now and own the device. You'd be starting a new account rather than exchanging. Sell the 6S.
So I would have to get up at 0300 and get in the line just like everyone else.
That is a bit annoying to get up at that time of the day.

(And no, the 6s is going to be joining my collections)

Last time I upgraded on iUP, they made you choose a carrier which in turn determined which model you got. I was and am still now an AT&T customer, but if I would have taken the AT&T model, I would not have been able to switch at a later time to Verizon if I wanted and some countries I travel too still use CDMA and some of the Verizon LTE bands. On top of that was the modem concern that the intel modem was slower and lacked some capabilities etc. So I wanted the Verizon model phone. Last year when you picked up your iUP phone, you had to activate it in the store AND it had to be activated on the network you chose. I had no intention at that time of switching to Verizon, but I had to get a hard credit check and activate on Verizon in order to get my phone. The same day, I cancelled my Verizon account and received a full refund (Virginia 3 business day law for refunds), but still had the hard credit check.

Hopefully this time around there will be no requirement to activate in store as this certainly cannot be accomplished for the delivered phones. I will be curious to see what the modem implications are again and specifically if they require activation on the network associated with the model phone.

This is literally exactly what I was hoping for. I was worried about how it would work since I want a 256GB Black X ASAP, this eases my worries. Back to excitement for tomorrow!

Never said that, but the issue becomes with activation - then switching it. They generally won't do this on launch day, but again YMMV. I wouldn't bank on it.

Did exactly what? I'm just going off personal experience and what I know of policies. Things change all the time :)

I hope T-Mobile customers will be able to reserve phones like Apple had everyone do last year. I don't mind having to complete the process in an Apple store, but not being able to pre-order/reserve a new iPhone is going to suck.
Or why can’t they do a ship to store? Instead of shipping the phone to you (like they will for Vzn, ATT, and Sprint customers), ship it to a store near you and you complete the iUP process there. So T-Mobile upgrades aren’t limited to store stock, and they save the money of a “return kit” shipment and return. Problem solved.

I would wake up at the launch time, and try to get in and see. Last year they didn't allow for T-Mo reservations, because they have no way to verify for your account. Since they can't, you could go in and reserve a bunch of T-Mo phones with no intent to hook them to service and try to scalp them - thus taking away tons of phones from other customers at launch. AT&T, Verizon and Sprint all tie into common upgrade and billing checks, so they can be verified prior to sale. I don't think you'll be able to upgrade online just yet :-/

I have TMO and I was able to make a reservation for my upgrade last year. They verified my service at the Apple store, went through the Citizen's Bank process, activated it and that was it. You were not allowed to leave the store with an Upgrade w/o activating it on your TMO account.

It would be *better* if TMO customers were also allowed to upgrade via mail exchange but at least this way there will be less crowds coming in for reservations? That's the bright side anyway.

I am an IUP member who just submitted credit freezes with the big 3 agencies as a security precaution against the Equifax hack. Am I going to have trouble upgrading?

Correct - what I meant was that he wouldn't be able to do the mail to home option. Especially since apple mentioned you can't on their site. But they could update it tomorrow when the store goes down - one can hope!

Yeah. When I went to store for my iPhone 7 Plus, I was an 8:30 appointment but was taken at 8 when the store opened. It wasn't nuts at all, very controlled and low crowds.
