I'm considering switching from T-Mobile to Verizon because of this. .
Same... which sucks because I have an amazing deal. 3 lines, $80 per month, totally unlimited full HD.
I've twittered and emailed John Legere several times about this over the last year, but it's been crickets.
He needs to understand that I'm an iPhone/Apple fan first and a Tmobile fan second.

3 lines at $80 pet month! I just switched from paying $250 at Verizon for 3 lines to paying $170 at T-mobile and I though that was a good deal.

I find a third credit check in three years ridiculous so I will most likely stop doing it anyways. If all payments are received on time prior to the upgrade this should really be waived for returning customers.

Sorry that I am digging back to yesterday in the thread - but, I'm in the same boat.

I have excellent credit and am thinking the same thing after entering the IUP last year and the first hard check - Ive always wondered if they would pull the trigger on a hard check year after year and it seems as though that's a yes.

What would you guys do in my situation then? I am about a year into payments (7 256GB) at right after launch and would pay up to be ready to upgrade - but, to get off of this IUP track and forego the credit checks..what would be my best option? Are my hands basically tied if I want to upgrade?

Only thing I can really think of is pay off current/sell it - then pay cash for new one? bahhhh I wanted the simplicity of just upgrading year after year - I am done selling devices, etc. The hard checks are ridiculously excessive.

Poor bastards ... they could have been forced to visit the Apple store to trade-in their last year's phone. Tragic is the world we live in.

Only way I could think would involve selling the device after buying the phone outright on a 0% APR promotion.

If you have great credit anyways, another inquiry will likely not hurt your score (and if it does, it would only be by a few points). Spacing them out over a year like that isn't a huge deal at all. There are folks who "Farm" cards for the benefits, and have multiple inquiries in a few months, but maintain 750+ credit scores due to the way they treat their accounts and balances.

YMMV, but last year I only got a soft pull (no credit impact) when I upgraded. Obviously this depends on the consumer, as everyone's credit profiles differ. Many banks have access to your FICO score continually, and will monitor that or also monitor general credit profile info (this is how you get those pre-approval offers). If your profile is strong enough, they may not likely force you to have another hard pull. But I personally would not be remotely concerned about the potential hit on your credit, plus the old loan gets closed so it will look good(ish) that the account balance is no longer there.

Completely agree! I'm considering getting a home equity loan soon for some home upgrades and really don't want another hard pull for something I have paid for consistently during this program. I might wait until the rush is over for this phone.

Not sure if this has been asked but does anyone know is there a limit on how many phones you can get thru the upgrade program? I currently have a iPhone 7+ under contract but will be giving it to one of my daughters. My hubby wants a new iPhone and I will probably want the X. So that would be one 12 months into a contract and two new contracts. Any info would be appreciated? Thanks

The iPhone X which will "arrive at a later date we dunno when" but u can place the upgrade now just in case it arrives on time.

I wonder if the mail in is relevant to Australia as well.

Fascinating. So even a phone that is still in a sealed package-- hasn't been opened or touched physically-- is considered used if someone brings it in to return it?

this guy is wrong. i did exactly this with my current phone

Absolutely not wrong. The box technically never even needs to be opened when the phone is sold. I’m not making this up, it happened to me on launch day. It’s a hit or miss proposition that the system will allow the very same unopened phone to be resold while you’re in the store.

I'm glad they're getting the process down to a smooth flow, but unless something strange happens at the event today I can't talk myself into doing IUP again. I can't see paying $50/month to forfeit touch ID; seems like they should be paying us!
What do you mean? Pay $50/m and forfeit Touch ID??

Well all of us on T-mobile hoping for an iPhone X have another six weeks to sort this out!

It appears this language is no longer on the upgrade page regarding mail in trade in.

Only reference I can find to T-Mobile is regarding enrollment and "T-Mobile customers will need to contact their carrier to complete the activation."

In the fine print it still says t mobile must activate in store.

So it looks like you can go on Apple site and get pre approved to preorder even if TMOBILE customer. I did it and now all I have to do is preorder without any financial issues. I even pre picked out my phone so it’ll be a fast process thirsday night.

We had this conversation yesterday about 'Upgrading' versus 'Enrolling in the IUP' and that's clear, but the question is, do you do that when you want to add more new phones to your existing Verizon (any carrier except TMo, I assume) account?

I have the same issue, and we would like clarification on the best way to proceed. I have my current 7 Plus, which I will be upgrading in the IUP the normal way (hopefully to an X). That's straightforward.

How do we add other phones to the IUP that are already using existing lines on my Verizon account?

Do I use the 'Join the IUP' again on my own phone (under my Apple ID, even thought the phone won't be using that ID), and create a new account (I assume it ends up on my Citizens One account as a new loan)?

The button text is 'Buy a new iPhone on an existing wireless account'; when you click through, you get:

I'd like to enroll
OR
I'm already part of the program.

You think you'd pick 'I'm already part of the program', but that's only for upgrading the phone I'm on. (Well, you get the 'If the iPhone you want to Upgrade isn't listed...' but I don't want to 'upgrade', I want to start a new track completely, which I assume is 'enroll'.)

So, I assume I want to 'enroll again' to start a new phone on another line as a new IUP track (as it were).

Can anyone confirm this is the correct answer?
(When I click on 'like to enroll', that's as far as we get, because the 8 isn't available yet, of course)

Thanks!

So how did you go about doing this?
Went on the Apple site and went through motions of buying it. It pulled up my current iphone on the iup and asked if I wanted to pre qualify as prep for preorder.

This is new! Thanks for sharing. I just did the same on the Apple Store app and it didn't mention anything about T-mobile not being able to order. Maybe Apple and tmo have actually gotten their act together.
