Is it true that you have to be the account holder to use this program? If true, that sucks. They keep saying it has nothing to do with the carrier but clearly it does.
You need to know the account holder's details - last four of SSN, account number, etc.

Strange. I just applied and got declined. I have upper tier credit (788). Doesn't make sense. Only reason I can think of is I used to have a fraud alert on my credit report. Oh well. I just paid for it outright. Now I will patiently wait for the rejection letter explaining the reasons. They said I would receive in the mail in a few days. I haven't been declined for credit in 20+ yrs - made me feel young :)

I was denied too credit score is 839 but I have an alert due to our income taxes being hacked. Had to pay for it too if I wanted it!

No, that's not what I'm saying. What I'm saying is that there is no definitive yes or no on whether it's a hard pull or not. Stop taking things in such a literal fashion.

Warbrain, you've demonstrated that you know very little about the difference between hard and soft credit inquiries, how they show on credit reports, and the impact that they may have on scoring and manual reviews. Please discontinue your attempts to mislead people looking for sincere and genuine information.

Just got back.... they acknowledged that yesterday the iPhone upgrade program was not working at all yesterday and proceeded to help me return the phone/apply again but today iUP isn't working with T-mobile. I think I might just give up, too much of hassle

Wanted to share my experience from yesterday:

I have unified billing - AT&T wireless and DirecTV combined bills. The specialist said couldn't even access our account in order to begin the apple upgrade program. It gave him an error that because we had unified billing that Apple couldn't offer us any programs. I ended up purchasing two phones for full price. There is only one pro to having combined bills and multiple cons with unified billing. Smh.

They had better luck yesterday with a laptop than an iPad.

I don't have one. I would have had one reported to me in an email. So no, it doesn't.

Just because you don't doesn't mean that no one does. Why would so many other people lie about getting a hard pull? I'm more inclined to believe the majority than one person who might have slipped through the hard pull cracks.

Go ahead and believe that but I also believe the whiners who wanted to avoid a hard pull would be louder than those who didn't get hard pulled.

All I'm saying is that there's no absolute answer. Everyone is failing to understand that.

Smoothest process! Took literally less than 5 minutes. Credit score in the mid 600s building slowly (I'm young) T-Mobile upgrade system gave a few issues but overall hassle free!

A pain isn't it? I went through the same thing yesterday.

Honestly, I was in and out in under 30min. I just find it strange to require a carrier. My actual service is provided by my company so I wouldn't have qualified for the AUP. I just signed up under my wife's personal account. This had the inconvenience of having her number moved to the SIM card of the phone I bought, but otherwise it was a painless process. Talking to the Apple Store reps it seems that the carriers are the 'stores' where you buy the phone from (you're actually directed thru, in my instance, T-Mobile's order page and check out as if you bought it full price). The QR code is then sent to Citizen who I'm assuming pays back the carrier for the phone. What I don't understand it why not do the same exact thing, but with Apple instead of the carrier. i.e., I buy it from Apple and apple collects from Citizen. Not really sure how Citizen is profiting from all this other then maybe a small kickback from Apple.

Here's my screenshot again from my morning chat. The rep originally said she believed it was a soft pull and that's what they were told. I explained this was proven false by many customers yesterday. She then had me on hold and said she contacted her manager and they contacted Citizens One and did then confirm that there "should" be a hard pull.

Some may not have and that is the exception and not the norm.

They also confirmed that the hard pull is just for the first phone and not any further upgraded phones.

So

does that mean once you're in, your set for life? If so that's pretty sweet :)
Perhaps by next year, they trust that if you've made 12 payments you are good for 12 more, etc. That's how credit card companies treat requests for credit line increases.

Yes, I asked twice to be sure... You will only get one hard pull from Citizens One Bank as long as we keep current on payments when upgrading. ;)

Strange that the AUP doesn't impact your carrier program, but still requires you to have a carrier. I have a company provided SIM and because I'm not on the account am not eligible for the AUP.

Ugh, I chatted with Apple Chat online yesterday and they told me that I could do the AUP (I am in the same situation as you). I am having my employers AT&T contact clarify with AT&T on Monday to confirm, but I'm guessing the Apple Chat rep was wrong and I won't be able to.

Yes, when I signed up yesterday, they asked me if I had a personal account (which I do). My guess is that Apple had to agree to this in order to keep the carriers happy (or at least not too upset). Maybe when they officially launch the SIM-free model they will extend the AUP to those without an account at the national carriers, business accounts, etc.

I made a reservation today around 8am for a space gray 6s+ 128gb with AT&T. My reservation was for 5-530pm at the NYC Soho location. I showed up at 430pm, asked where to go and waited for about 5 seconds and I was being helped. They ask for my name and try to find my reservation in their system. They can't find it. I show them my email confirmation from 802am this morning and the guy asks 3 other people for help. They said this happened a few times today. After about 15mins they find a phone in the back for me. Awesome!

I chatted with the apple dude about all the high credit score people that had been denied a phone. He said he only had one person get denied and it was because the guy used a business card. So now they are really stressing the requirements before starting the process.

I have a 2yr contract with AT&T that I started when the iPhone 6 came out last year. So I'm about a year through that. I'm the sole user on my account. My driver's license does not match my current address/credit card address/AT&T address. So I brought my passport and a current utility bill with my name and address on it. I didn't even show him my DL. As we were going through the process I double checked every line to make sure all of it matched my current address, etc. I look up my credit 2-3 times a week using CreditKarma and, as of today, I have around 720 between Fico and Experian. The credit card I used was a Capitol One Mastercard that I've had for less than a year, has a $3500 limit, and currently has about $750 on it.

ACCEPTED!
