Oh wow. For ATT, it's a little bit easier. I can simply slip a SIM into my outright purchased device and be good to go. The $45 is the biggest rip off i've ever seen!

Agreed. But then again, I don't even know if the person I was speaking with knew what they were talking about.

With Verizon and ATT now charging a $45 activation fee, I want to remind everyone that you are going to see this "upgrade" or "activation" fee on your next months bill. Even with the Apple Upgrade Program! That's why they require activation.

I think its complete horse poo, but i was able to confirm with an Apple chat person that any upgrade / activation fee's still apply.

If you can afford to pay for it outright, and you're on ATT or VZW, save yourself $45!!

I work for AT&T and I can confirm that we are treating this as a BYOD device. "Bring Your Own Device" If its a new line yes there will be an activation fee of $15 if it's a line you already have then no fee will be charged.

Thanks, Deviant! Another question: if I were to pay off the installment agreement on one of my lines next Friday, 9/25, would my upgrade eligibility be available immediately?

Yes, That's what I did, lol.

My plan is to try for the iPhone Upgrade Program during my reservation on 9/25, but if that fails I want to immediately jump on my iPad, pay off the installment agreement, and go the Next route. Think that will work?

I don't know how fast paying off through the myAT&T app or website is. I only know from paying it in store. In store it's paid instantly. I think when you do the online method it adds it to your bill and then you have to pay your bill. Not sure though. What I did was I paid, in store, the balance owed to upgrade not the full pay off. That way if the Apple Program doesn't work I can fall back on trading my current phone in and doing Next again.

I was gonna add that I also work for att wanted to add that yes as long as you can use the same sim card you won't be charged a thing if you purchase your phone out right or something similar but if in the process you need to get a newer sim card as of the 14th you will be charged $15 for your sim.

I checked on the AT&T website and in my account there appears to be a way to pay off the agreement directly without it going towards the service bill.

The $15 for a sim card is market related. I work in the Gulf States market and we do not charge for sim cards.

You'll probably have to have pretty good credit to qualify for their financing program if you're not sure about it then id probably go ahead and go the next payoff route. that way you won't run into any problems and lose your phone

Kind of in limbo now because I definitely want to use the Upgrade Program but Apple is still only taking reservations for the 25th and everything except 16-gig 6S out of stock (I'm looking for a 64-gig 6S Plus). Do we have any indication of when they'll start taking appointments for later dates? I'm just hoping that this isn't some "Day One Only" kind of scheme.

The upgrade program will be available after day one, but right now they're only taking reservations for day one.

Except someone who does not have a credit card, only VISA Debit Card

This is what I alluded to earlier, with possibly seeing a rush of people going out to apply for a secured credit card - something like the cards given out by Capital One and the like. There could be a glut of people going out to get apply for those with the hope of getting approved and the card shipped out prior to the 25th. With that line of secured credit opened, that would qualify.

BL.

That's only if its a new account/line. Least for AT&T.
Well I guess I'll have to talk to another rep. When you you go to apple.com and you purchase the AT&T device at full price it still asks you for your phone number and the account info. But it will come with a pre-activated sim. You think I can just remove that and just insert my current AT&T sim card and avoid the activation fee?

I've paid for plenty of hotel rooms with Visa debit cards. The hotel treats it like a regular credit card. The car rental companies won't accept them because they think they'll be able to charge your card thousands in case of damage to the car. They didn't really think it through, because you could have given them a proper credit card with a tiny limit since they can't get away with hitting every customer's card with a several thousand dollar authorization hold.
My experience with hotels and car rentals so far has been you can *pay* with a debit card but they want the card on file to be a credit card. At least, that's been the case with Hertz, Marriott and Loews Hotels.

Forgive my ignorance - and I know you can only speak for ATT - but doesn't a new line mean a new phone number? I know I"m missing something basic here, but I don't know what it is.

Thank you.

Correct. A new plan opened, or a new line added to an existing plan...both would be new numbers and subject to a $15 fee (with AT&T). Any lines you already have are grandfathered and there is no activation fee for BYOD.
