Correct. A new plan opened, or a new line added to an existing plan...both would be new numbers and subject to a $15 fee (with AT&T). Any lines you already have are grandfathered and there is no activation fee for BYOD.

Thank you. Then I don't understand why my upgrading to a new phone would trigger a $40 fee. Oh, no. I have to call Verizon again!

I didn't really argue the point but my suspicion is since Apple will be activating it from the store they can use that as an excuse to charge the activation fee. We'll see what happens on the 25th.

I'm on Verizon, as I said above, and I think they're going to do the same thing. In my conversation, they told me the only way to avert that was to take the 2 yr option, whereby I paid $299 upfront then an additional $20 access fee for two years.

So I just talked to Apple rep over the phone and she said that you cannot activate the phone on the prepaid plan. It has to be a postpaid plan.

Somebody who's familiar with AT&T, maybe you can help me figure out my situation:

I'm currently locked into a 2-year contract with AT&T, which expires in March. I'd like to get the new iPhone 6s Plus soon using the iPhone upgrade program through Apple.

So whenever the model I want is available, will I be able to go into the Apple store, get a new iPhone 6s Plus through Apple, that just rolls into my existing plan through March? And if so, any idea what the logistics are as far as AT&T knowing I'm using a new phone model? (Assuming AT&T does this, but want to make sure)

Thanks!

You're just buying a phone and activating it on your line. It has nothing to do with your contract.

I work for AT&T and I can confirm that we are treating this as a BYOD device. "Bring Your Own Device" If its a new line yes there will be an activation fee of $15 if it's a line you already have then no fee will be charged.

Then why are those of us who are buying the new 6s directly from Apple, and putting it on an existing line, being told during the purchase process that AT&T will be charging us a $15 fee?

Um, each phone has its own IMEI number, so they would know, in theory....BUT if you use your old sim, they won't charge you for $15 to activate it in new phone, if I understand correctly.

Apparently Apple has been putting that message on orders, even if you don't owe the fee. Just watch your next couple of AT&T bills and make sure you don't get charged.

This is what I want to know as well and plus it will come pre-activated upon arrive. Do you have to use that sim card or can you just insert your current AT&T sim? If latter then obviously you shouldn't be charged for the activation fee.

Just treated ATT and reps are doing the script and saying $15 charge is for upgrade. What are they upgrading?NOTHING. I didn't even say iPhone. So if I but a 5s on my line they would claim that's an upgrade and charge me $15? FCC Complaint on the way.

My experience of reserving twice for 9/25 but not getting an email all worked out well. As someone suggested, emailed Tim Cook and also mentioned that many were concerned even though they got email confirmation but couldn't see anything associated with their Apple ID. Amazingly, I got a response right away, an email and a call to my house from and "Executive Relations" person for the online store. Super responsive and he was able to track down a confirmation and that both emails were sent. Just lost in cyberspace I guess. Checked spam folders and setting every way I could and nothing turned up. So got my 6S+ all reserved for the UP after all!

cool that is impressive.

That is strange. I was advised by the chat rep to go and ask a Apple Store specialist. Does T-Mobile offer post paid and BYOP? I could get into a plan before the 25th,..

I have a phone reserved for full price in store but I'm going to attempt to do the upgrade plan. I currently have next paid to the point they will let me upgrade with a trade in. But I'm going to sell the phone and pay it off after I pickup the 6S. This next plan still being on there won't interfere with my apple upgrade plan activation will it?

How can you guys be charged an upgrade fee from A$&$ when you are purchasing this from apple and it’s being financed by apple? This program has nothing to do with the carrier.

Yup. just go to a store and bring you phone. They'll put the new SIM in for you and activate the service. No contract. No hassle. Well, they may try to sell you on JUMP! but just tell them you already have the new phone reserved.

The ‘Apple’ upgrade plan would not affect your account in any way. It only affects your account if the purchase or upgrade is carried out through AT&T’s plans. A next upgrade or a 2 year contract upgrade is carried out by AT&T. The Apple iPhone upgrade program is a totally separate deal.

I know that but the fact you need a line to activate on made me nervous.
