AT&T's Next program itself didn't cheat customers, it was the fact that they were trying add it on top of subsidy-level service pricing that cheated customers. AT&T has since corrected that problem.
Point is the perceived damage. As I said they are same programs, do math and they shake out within $100 dollars per year of each other. But AT&T is perceived to be underhanded and place their interests above the customer.
Again reality is both companies answer to shareholders and profit margins. Apple has the better PR. If AT&T would allow 14 day no restock trade ins, have genious bar in their stores and overall project a more folksy customer oriented image they too may gain in the perception arena.

With verizon edge I pay $37 dollars a month. Since I have the 15gb plan I get a $25 discount. So I'm paying $12 net for the iPhone 6. If I go with the apple upgrade program do I lose the $25 discount. If so, it's better to stay with verizon.
No you wouldn't lose it. the $25 discount is for not having a subsidy and contract.

Tax?

Even if you account for that it seems like this is not interest free like the plans from the carriers? Apple Care + is $99 now for the 6S and the phone is $749 (for a 64gb AT&T - perhaps unlocked are more?). That is $848 vs $877.92 for the installment plan from Apple.

Right now I just sell my old phone each year and pay an early upgrade fee to AT&T which makes the net cost each year about $250 but I am constantly locked in a 2 year contract.

It might be a good option but I need to research it some more.

Ok, so I spoke with a representative from 1800 MY APPL and they said that the iPhone Upgrade Program is still done through carrier and that the phones are *locked*. ::Confused::

That's 538.92 for the iPhone 6s plus 128GB. That's half the cost.

So it'll cost you 1077.84 to pay it out right. Lets say you sell it on craigs list a year later and get $600 back. You would have paid 477.84 for the phone. It's a gamble though. You might not get $600 dollars. You might get $400 back. Depends right?

So 538.92 a year guaranteed for a new phone every year, OR,
$477.84 a year but it's a gamble. You might not get that lucky.

I'd rather go for the sure thing to be honest. Less hassle. Less chance of getting it stolen on you from a bad sale. Or dealing with the wrong people to sell your iphone. You deal with Apple directly no hassle.

I think you'll always be able to make more money selling it on your own if you time it right. But it's like trading a car vs. selling it yourself. Some people just don't want to hassle. Especially when it's dealing with eBay or Craiglist. It's easier to know the terms upfront and just trade it in. Or if keep it if you want. Apple Upgrade, AT&T NEXT, Verizon Edge are for the most part very good programs that allow customers a reasonable amount of flexibility.

I was paying 42.50 plus 6.99 for coverage through AT&T. Now it'll be 40.75. This will save me over $8 per month and AT&T will not have anything on me. I like it. No more buying a car from the gas station.

Technically, they do make money off the device. That 0% installment plan isn't quite 0% since they're likely paying Apple just $400-500 for each phone (latest non-Plus 16GB). Of course, they make lots, lots, lots more on the service so it's good for carriers to be able to lock customers into long-term contracts.

Are you sure about that? They would be undercutting themselves on every single sale.

I would imagine 100% of the profits go to Apple and the carriers get theirs on the service contracts and accessories. I could see Apple paying a small fee per unit sold...but no way they are taking $200-$300 per device out of their pocket and putting in the carrier just for processing the sale.

If you are going to be planning on making only 12 payments, the Apple plan is the way to go. However, if you will pay the entire term, ATT term is 20 months while Apple's is 24. So in the end you are paying more with Apple unless you are upgrading at 12 months, which makes sense. Me, I upgrade every year but like the convenience of selling online and making more money and owning the phone. So I'll buy it outright or go Next and pay off early since I have no use for AppleCare Plus

I'm curious if this will void my unlimited plan on Verizon by moving toward their upgrade program. I'm thinking not but hesistant to be the first to try it.
I have unlimited and clicked on "Check your account status with your carrier" and got this:
The phone number you entered cannot be upgraded. This may be due to a feature, line, or device change pending on your account. Please contact Verizon Wireless at 1-888-866-6924 for more information.

AppleCare plus is now $129, up from $99. That is the $30 difference.

That too. But the person also didn't include tax though. I think Apples upgrade program is a good deal. I'm going to try for it. I want a new phone every year anyway heh.

No, Brandon083 is forgetting that AppleCare+ now costs $129 not $99.

Can I pre order through Apple but keep my two year contract? I didn't see that option on the website. It appears that if I want to keep my subsidized phone price and renew a two year contract I have to pre order through my carrier. Would this be correct?

That's the case for AT&T. You can only buy on 2-year contract directly from them.

I'm confused about this. I"m in your same situation. (I can't remember why I'm paying +6.99 either) But Two questions:
1. Would my AT&T monthly Mobile plan fees be the same or will they jack up the fee like they do for a subsidized phone? I'm guessing NOT because it isn't a subsidy.
2. Am I even eligible since I'm on NEXT? I think I'd have to pay off my full NEXT fee. (which is another 8 months.)
Now if I can convince my kids they'd like my 6plus, then I'd definitely consider this and upgrade off their phone.

You should have the cheaper ATT plan minus the phone payment. But you would likely need to pay off your next phone and sell it since you want to move to the apple financed option

Okay all we need to discuss this!! If the details are appealing I am changing my mind about upgrading this year. What do you all think of the new program?

Not worth it. I always sell my phone and make more $$ than the new phone purchase. Iphones pay for themselves if you sell each year and not wait for them to age.

How much have you sold previous iphones for and what size
