I find it funny that people blame their cases for scratching the phone when the phone is prone to scratches. I have that clear case and have not had a scratch on my phone yet. These phones have various first generation issues that don't manifest themselves across all of the units equally. I wouldn't be surprised if the manufacturing process was improved on a per batch basis. I'm not surprised that Apple's willing to take back phones no questions asked. Could Apple be looking at the imei numbers to determine which batch yields superior product? We could be human guinea pigs. We are not alone. ;)

Hi,

Specifically which Scotch Brite Sponge did you use? They make a number of them with various levels of abrasiveness.

I want to try this, as I also bought the Incase cover, and the chrome is all screwed up.

Thanks

Currently I'm @ work and don't know the exact type of Scotch Brite sponge I used. When I get home I will let everyone know the exact one I used.

Dude, once you figure that out im totally gonna give it a test run!

While the chrome was nice to look at initially, I think it might be a little to "blingy", if you will.

The brushed metal looks classy. Don't know how else to describe it. CLASSY!

Just finished mine!

Mega props to you MeekB2G! It looked so good, I ran down to Target and picked up a pack of 3M SandBlaster 320grit finishing pads (the purple ones). Ultra fine and very flexible (like a really thin spunge).

Just finished and it looks great! It was so easy. Just took a bit of time getting the tape right. You nailed it with the eletrical tape. It's very flexible and doesn't leave anything behind.

Thanks for being the first brave soul.

Glad to see someone else tried it, could you possibly post pics of your results? Would be interested in seeing if there are differences in the finish using a different product. Thanks!:)

Thanks for the tip! I did mine and it looks great. I did the Apple logo too, but I kind of regret it. It was a nice built in mirror, lol.

I don't have a digital camera handy but I can tell you that it looks the same as MeekB2G's. I love it! In my opinion, it's the way Apple should of done it. It's got a MacBook Pro look about it.

More scratches....arrgghhh

Apple's decision for this stainless/chrome trim (not sure which) is a mistake. The satin finish produced by a scotch sponge is brilliant; I think I will try it if I can't remove the scratches by using the ice-creme product.

The current scratches on my iPhone gnaw at me...Apple had to know it would scratch. Everything else I think is damn near perfect about the iPhone.

I have the scotch brite link that shows the exact one i used it's the Heavy Duty Scouring Pad (Green one) They come in a pack of 3 and are really thin. http://www.3m.com/us/home_leisure/scotchbrite/products/scrubbing_scouring.html

Johnpastore has used a different pad and had the same results. Thanks johnpastore!:D

Did you put electrical tape on the back casing as well? Will the scour pad scratch that as well?

Thanks

Thanks MeekB2G for posting the link for the pad. I'm going to try it myself tonight.

I too like 'johnpastore' used electrical tape on both sides just to be on the safe side....But suprisingly when i did the apple symbol on the back i didn't use tape and it didn't seem to scratch the back casing at all (I was rubbing very lightly to keep from scratching it though) The apple symbol on the back took alot more rubbing than the trim did.

Were you able to get it perfect, even to the edge?

**I was referring to the edge of the Apple** It takes some time, but, I finally was able to get mine perfect.

Nice!!!The edge of the apple symbol is the reason why it took me so long. At first i was gonna leave it, but after seeing that little bit of chrome it annoyed me and i went back at it again til i got it...

I plan on using this technique this week. I was also going to use an exacto knife to cut the tape around the corners. I'll post pics once I am done.

Just did it!

My friend and I just did this mod together on our iPhones.

And I must say... it looks FANTASTIC!

Granted, we're not done yet. We still have to freehand the corners, but wow... I just had to make a post and say that it looks awesome. Pictures don't do the mod any justice.

I used the exact materials described by the OP! Will post pix soon

great!

Well I just took the plunge after getting tired of seeing the scratches from the incase sleeve. I picked up the sandblaster pads at Target as well and used electrical tape and it's beautiful. Took 20 mins tops and just freehanded the corners. The tape is a great tip as it's thick enough to not rub through and it's flexible when putting on and leaves no residue. The Sandblaster pads are great too. They are thin, flexible and cloth-like for easy folding/manipulation.

Pics Pics Pics!

Finally done baby! My friend and I did it at the same time.

Unfortunately, we have no digicam available where we are (I know I know).

So I took a pic of my iPhone using his iPhone.

Yes, I hacked my iPhone and put custom icons (as well as custom ringtones, custom battery, and replaced the AT&T with a red Apple logo) hanks to guys at ModMyiPhone.com.

It took us about 2 hours because we were very very tedious in our "controlled scratching" of bezel. But the end results are amazing. These pics don't the phones any justice.

I love it!

I wonder...since you initially did this to get rid of the microscratches from using the Incase covers that everyone is complaining about, are you getting more of the same after this "controlled scratching" or is it not noticeable anymore because of the brushed metal look?

Very Nice....I love the hack with the different icons. I think i'm gonna have to try that one next.

Exactly what I was thinking while reading all of this.

I don't have many scratches, but if they get bad, I would consider doing this. I think it looks even better than the chrome. I'd like to see some longer term results though.

NOTHING NEW

this was done a couple of years back with the ipod.

Wow, calm down, seriously what's your problem? It's new for the iPhone and thats all that matters.

Good job MeekB2G. :) I also think it looks better than the original finish.

Finished Mine - Looks Great

Finally did mine tonight. I came out flawless. Looks much nicer and classier than that blingy scratch magnet chrome. I'll try and post a pic later.

The brushed look will be no less susceptible to scratching than the original polished finish; however, scratches will be less noticable than before. Remember, the brushed finish you create is itself, a series of parallel scratches. How noticable the new scratches appear on the brushed finish depends both on the depth and angle of the scratch, compared to those in the brushed finish.

If the trim piece is made of the same material throughout (as opposed to a coated finish), you will be able to use your scrubbing pad to periodically buff minor scratches out with the same meticulous care that you practiced in the beginning.
