How bad is the battery life? Do you have to charge it daily, twice a day, etc? This is regarding if you use it to play music, make calls, 3G web, etc, no streaming video

If I listen to music at work for about 3-4 hours a day and then surf the web for maybe 20 minutes and also use push email and make calls it will not last an entire day. I know the genius bar can replace my battery that's not my point. On all other devices you can have a second charged battery to use in case the one in the phone dies and you are not around an outlet.

"Wah! Why didn't the ferrari come out right after the Model-T?" Did you really just join the forum for this? It's called progress, dude. It takes time.

MMS, cut/copy/paste, search has been around for years. The iPhone's lack of these simple features would be like buying a Ferari without a CD player.

I understand what the OP is saying. That is part of the reason I am still undecided as to which phone to get. Hopefully by june/july I will know. Its as if companies purposely leave out basic features so ppl will "upgrade" to the latest and greatest, while still leaving features out...

That's exactly what I am saying. They did purposely leave this stuff out and I really doubt I am the first person to discover this. And yes, I know the Blackberry will never come close to the iPhone as far as downloading Apps, however the Blackberry has been able to cut/copy/paste, search, spell check since the very original model. And yes I know the iPhone has auto-correct. However, if you misspell something that the iPhone doesn't have in the auto-correct database, it will not fix it. A spell-checker with an entire dictionary would be much better.

Since Apple doesn't charge iPhone owners for the OS/firmware upgrades, why on earth would they 'leave out' functions and implement them later? You make it sound like they do this maliciously, as though it's somehow in their interest at our expense. Is it that difficult to take it for face value; that they hold off on implementing features until they're ready to be released? Do you have any other conspiracy theories you'd like to share?

Oh OK. I just got thru talking to a coworker who has an iphone. He does not use his iphone for music and rarely for phone calls, but he sez he charges his iphone daily. He was thinking that with my scenario I prob would have to charge it twice per day...wow  Maybe we should have a poll as to see how often do you have to recharge the iphone....

They aren't simple, they are correcting. Gem up on OS 3.0

1 - MMS in ~2 months
2 - Landscape Keyboard - coming.
3 - Spell check - there is some. I'd imagine it'll be part of SDK also, if the app maker implements.
3 - Cut Copy Paste - ~2 Months. Hold your horses
4 -Lack of BT Integration The iPhone (3G) by all accounts might soon have the best BT integration and peripheral systems around. Wait 2 months.

6 - Can't replace own battery. But it is replacable. The life is actually decent, but the drain by certain apps is high. If your battery is wearing down, you don't "have to pay money to have my battery replaced" - Go see a Genius.

You mean to tell me Apple can have the keyboard landscape from day 1 in the Internet browser but can't do it in an email or text message? Please. They release these "updates" so they will always have something new to announce. Rather than just release all these features in the beginning and make our lives easier. If it would have taken a month or two to fix ok. But 2 years? That's insane.

No one else sees a problem that it took Apple 2 years to come out with a fix that allows all of these features?

Why should anyone expect the iPhone to be anything other than what it is?

This is the same old argument that has been going on since day 1. If you didn't know what the iPhone was capable of when you bought it, than that's your fault. If you don't like it's feature set, than why did you buy it?

Well there are ppl here who have had 1st gen iphone, currently own iphone 3g, and plan to get 3rd gen iphone... Regarding conspiracy theories, did u know that the earth is really flat? ;)

I prefer my Blackberry Curve to my old iPhone 3G any day. I even went and bought an iPod Touch last week and will be returning it today.

I find the apps to be a bit fun at first but then they're just useless. I can't remember how many times I spent browsing around the App Store and looking at all the useless apps.

Apple should have focused more on the "phone" part of the iPhone. It's like they took their time to make an iPod Touch and then just threw a phone and camera in it. I always thought the iPhone was the best phone until I actually saw what it couldn't do as a phone.

It's a great device but I think Apple should really focus more on the "phone" part of the iPhone when they release a new model.

How can you focus on the "phone"? It does the job, make calls.

Yeah, it has been around for years. However, in my opinion the 3.0 update with it is by far the best implementation of it on a mobile platform. See, the thing about apple is that they take the time to try to figure out the best way to go about doing things as opposed to crapping it out just because all the other phones have whatever it is that has to be instantly available to you.

Reading everyone's responses kind of made me laugh. Every one of you wrote how all these issues will be fixes in "the new 3.0 software that is coming out." Why doesn't anyone else see a problem that it took Apple this long to correct these issues? They should have been standard in the first place. As to why am I posting this, because I want to and I can.

Yeah, and I bet this baby had all these features too..
Give them a break, the iPhone 3G is there second phone.. ever!

Personally, I think texting sucks on touch screen phones. PERIOD.

I had the iPhone and texting was a {bee-eye-tea-sea-aeche}

After going from iPhone to Blackberry Curve, it's so much easier, especially with spell check, copy/paste, and forwarding.

It sucks that iPhone users have to wait until summer for that when it should have been there since 2007's first iPhone release.

*sigh* another way for Apple to make money

People don't buy an iphone just to use it only as a phone...or else why not just stick with the el cheapo free phone...

Uh, ok. But what can't the iPhone do as a phone? Someone was bitching that the iPhone doesn't work as a phone. Protip: it does.

You have a broken battery.

I listen to that much (maybe more), easily surf that much, make calls, txt a decent amount, ALSO game a bit and I can go two days.

You realize the Curve came out after YEARS and years of Blackberry products, right? Go back to the first BB device and check out everything that bad boy was 'missing'.

Okay, come when the final release of 3.0 comes out, its not like the Blackberry Bold will then be able to play games and have the amount of apps the iPhone does, when 3.0 comes out, how many things does the Bold have against the iPhone compared to how many things the iPhone as over the Bold?

lol

Apps are fun for like 2 days until my iPhone is just sitting on my desk collecting dust while my Blackberry sits in my pocket.

Seriously speaking, an iPod Touch does it better with its faster processor and I'm actually returning my Touch because I think it's a waste of money now.

What can't the iPhone do as a phone?

MMS
Copy/Cut/Paste
SMS Forwarding
Stereo Bluetooth

The list can go on. This should all be fixed with 3.0 (hopefully). I bought the iPhone thinking I could do all that stuff but was disappointed to find out that I couldn't.

How can you focus on the "phone"? It does the job, make calls.

I agree but these days technology has upped through the market with newer things that help make the devices better in general.

Phones are now used for email, texting and internet browsing. They have advanced more into telecommunications devices. Why? Because people are usually on the go and need to check their mail or see what's on the net...

Have you realized that not many people use their cell phones for calling anymore?

You realize the Curve came out after YEARS and years of Blackberry products, right? Go back to the first BB device and check out everything that bad boy was 'missing'.

That's true but how many years ago was that? That was back around the 90s. You would think that Apple would have done research and learned from that. I mean this is over a decade later and it's sometimes hard to call the iPhone a smartphone.

Then again we will just have to wait until 3.0 releases in the summer.

Hmm, interesting definition of "phone" you got there.

Stereo bluetooth is something "phones" have, is it? Cut, copy, paste? I don't remember my Sony Ericsson cellphone having that. Odd.

The list "goes on" does it? Like not having BBM? Video chatting? Wireless playlist syncing when the GPS detects you're within certain area, and when your profile is set to a certain status? On and on like that?

My iPhone lets me call people. You know, like a "phone".

I think we should all wait until 3.0 releases to further judge the iPhone. It's definitely not the best phone out but it is revolutionary.

Apps are fun but there's no boasting when one can just get a smarter phone and an iPod Touch these days so don't use apps to boast.

Let's just stop the fighting. Apple and RIM did a great job making their phones and I hope to see better models in the future.

Now, let's just leave it at this.

Yes, I know those things aren't important to people. That's why you have people who buy "free" phones and then carry along an iPod Touch with them.

Alright, I gotta go now.

That's exactly what it is. I really love how everyone in here who is pro-iPhone keeps talking about this 3.0 update. These are features that should have been implemented when the phone first came out. Someone showed a picture of one of the older Blackberries. Once again, I am not going to say Blackberry makes a better device than the iPhone, but all the simple features were there from day 1. If it takes you two years to implement MMS, then you have a huge problem with your R&D department. I don't care how much testing you put it through. Once again, I truly believe that Apple was able to do this from day 1, however they keep releasing these "updates" every couple months so people have something to talk about. "Oh did you hear the new 3.0 iPhone firmware is coming out? Yeah it is going to have MMS and cut copy and paste!" That's when they dedicate a whole site to it on Apple.com and then create commercials about the ability to search your iPhone or send a picture message to, god forbid, someone who doesn't have an email enabled phone. That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it.

Uh, ok. But what can't the iPhone do as a phone? Someone was bitching that the iPhone doesn't work as a phone. Protip: it does.

If you can honestly say that you can go two days without recharging your iPhone, then it must sit powered off. Even if you only use it for phone calls and, do actually talk to people on the phone, it will not last for two days brand new right out of the box. Check the quoted talk-time directly from the Apple specs. Now add in listening to music, push email, surfing the web, texting, and emailing, and there is no way you go two days. So, in response to your response, no I do not have a broken battery.

There's always something to complain about

First of all, let's take a look at the first Blackberry, and the first Palm... I think things have progressed nicely for them. This was Apples first jump into the mobile phone business and I think they did an incredible job. They did so much right and while they revolutionized the mobile phone industry forever they missed out on a few ( yes important ) things.

It has taken Apple quite a while to fix these "problems" but in all honesty we all know that Apple likes to take it's time and do things right, if they would have rushed quick fixes out to every consumers whim we would have the most beautiful and feature packed ( not to mention SLOWEST AND SLOPPIEST ) phone around. How many other phones have you had where you've thought "I could have done that feature so much better"... Not with Apple, when the new features come out they think of everything. So for their first couple phones I think Apples done a great job, just think ... If this is where they started, what will we be communicating on in 10 years?

The way I see it

it depends on how you look at it.
I'm not going to take sides here, but the way i see it is a "mini" laptop and they threw in a little feature called Phone. I could complain about the signal and the dropped calls that i have, but that is ATT and not Apple.
They even exchanged my phone 3 times (every time the Genius guy told me that i had the most dropped calls he ever seen on iphone).
And, yes, Apple doesn't bring everything at once... to make you realize how much you need that..... and then YOU GET IT.
No complain about their company tough... just the best :apple:

I would not go as far as saying their company is the best. Quite far from it. The reason why I say that is simple. They introduced the iPhone with a very big price tag. Yes I was one of the people who bought it, that was my decision. However, when they dropped the price significantly only two months later, that was just a slap in the face to all of those customers who waited in line when it first came out. Yes, I realize as technology advances prices drop. However, that was a very dramatic price drop, one that you never see on other electronics that debut with a $500+ price tag. I was ok with spending that on the iPhone until they dropped the price not too long after. I was also not pleased with their $100 store credit as a way to say, "I'm sorry."

In addition, I bought a MacBook 13.3" White laptop last year. About a month after I got mine they introduced they new aluminum MacBook, which was better and cheaper. If you are going to do something like that, put an ad that simply reads, "New MacBook--Better price tag, coming soon." It's just respect for your customer, it's plain and simple.

Well y wasn't referring just Iphone..I thought Apple in general
look at apple versus any other PC or phone. And company in general.
I'm coming from the windows world where i bought my computer and 1 month later it was 1/2 priced...... but then again that i called progress and this stuffs are getting smaller, slicker, better, and cheaper each passing day.
And you can't say anything about it.. I bought my 24"imac almost 2 years ago, and it kept its price until 2-3 months ago. If it would have been a windows based PC .......
just think about it...

 I can't believe I'm getting sucked in to this argument...

Sounds to me like you really have a grudge against Apple as a company. You don't like when they lower prices, improve their products, or refresh their products. What do you want from them?

It's a phone, it makes phone calls. Not all cell phones have copy/cut/paste or Stereo bluetooth also. I actually like not forwarding SMS, there is almost never a need for it. I am so sick of people forwarding stupid crap to me, and junk I want to smack them at times.
And you bought the iPhone thinking it can do this??? Apparently you didn't do your research and anyone who spends this much money does research before they buy something. Heck, if I spend more than $50.00 on something (sometimes less) I research it and make sure I get the best deal I can buy and know what I am getting myself into.

Yes, I know those things aren't important to people. That's why you have people who buy "free" phones and then carry along an iPod Touch with them.

Alright, I gotta go now.

1st off most free phones are crap. I have never seen a free cell phone worth getting at all. When I had Verizon I got an extra $100.00 off (on top of the $100.00 for the every 2 year deal) and I still paid about $100.00 yet on a phone that was half decent. I don't even get my daughter the free phone because they are just too cheap.
