X is tall? It's just a slightly bigger 6/6S/7/8 non plus.
Plus the camera on the X is better than 8+

But as long as you enjoy your 8+, then it's all good.

I meant the aspect ratio. X is too tall, so you have a lot of space for content in vertical, such as lists of messages and mail, but don't have that much horizontal space. The keyboard is better on the 8+ since it is larger, so is watching pictures since they are wider.
And if you use the iPhone in landscape mode X is even worse since you don't have much room for your content. I know everyone uses the phone in portrait mode all the time, so it isn't a big deal, but I prefer a more "balanced" aspect ratio.

X is great upgrade for folks coming from a 4.7'' device, as they get more content in a similar package. Many Plus users like me will wait for a + version of X to have even more content on the same device size

I wish people would view the notch not as the bezel eating into the display, but the display eating into the bezel.

Except there is a ton of wasted empty space between the notch and the content below.

If they could have made the X without the notch, I am sure they would have. And they would have figured out some nice icon for it. I do not think the notch is a "showstopper", like the previous poster called it, but to me it does feel like "tried, but failed", a weak compromise, not really good enough, but the best they could do. Embracing it, trying to make it "iconic", that is dressing up a pig. Maybe it is more honest than trying to hide it in black, but it remains a bit weak.
Slowly but unmistakenly, the notch's impact becomes apparent.
Suddenly, there is soo much more. Guessing what's behind it....gets soo more compelling.
Articles, stuff, dear things, anything meaningful or not, may disappear.....or not. Now, there suddenly is a new dimension to viewing. Bubble-gum scrolling around a paramount obfuscation is the paradigm shift nobody knew we were waiting for. It all actually depicts the meaning of life, in its full dynamism and uncertainty.

appropriate for the occasion i'm sure.

Wow, pointless article is pointless. Could've written the exact same 6 weeks ago. Okay, if you factor in leaks, more like 20 weeks ago.

But the 8 makes a statement of its own, giant bezels and all. That statement is “I’m comfortable with what most phones are like today, and I want the ultimate one of those.”

Come on. Bezel as a fashion statement? Really?

Looks slick but what it does do is make that notch stick out in your face even more since it’s the only thing that doesn’t move and the fact you actually see the full pages slide under the notch makes your brain subconsciously see it more.

The notch didn’t bother me at all until I saw this. Not good...

Noticed that as well.
I wasn't the biggest notch-fan right away, but it grew on me.
This still looks weird. Maybe it's one of those things you won't see after using it for a week or it will bother you for ever, not 100% sure.

I suppose glass screen protectors are out with this phone. Swiping over the raised edge would get annoying quickly I imagine.

This multitasking gesture is even more suited for iPhones with the bottom bezels. There's a perfect gap between the screen and home button.

Apple is using the notch as a logo. It's not a compromise, they did it on purpose. OLED allows for irregular shaped screens.

Do you really think the notch would be there if they had the means to hide its functionality behind the screen?

Here the app switching mechanism looks different from the Keynote demo. In the Keynote demo, Craig simply swiped horizontally across the bottom of the screen. Why is it different here? I like the Keynote demo swiping much better.

I think it's just a different way of doing it. Apparently you can still swipe horizontally.

Can't wait to see the horrible burn-in from demo units that are on full blast 24x7.

Will be quite the marketing tool... ..

I'm sure the stores will rotate them out every few days in an effort to snow in customers, making them not realize OLED burn-in is a very real thing. Especially on a $1k+ telephone they will keep for like 4 years..

OLED burn-in is a cost of the tech, but Samsung's top end panels, the kind used in the X, are vastly slower at this phenomena than LG's (Pixel 2). I suspect OLED won't be any more a problem for Apple than it's been for Samsung with it's Galaxy or Note line using those panels.

Also not many keep a phone for 4 years. The vast majority of consumers are on 1 or 2 year exchange plans. Anyone who keeps a phone for the long haul is better off with an LED based phone -- true of whether they buy an iPhone or an Android.

No, of course not. I personally don't think that they will be able to do this for at least 3 years. 2020 we should see a new design language, likely all screen.
[doublepost=1508934517][/doublepost]I think it looks amazing, really smooth and fluid. Nice to see the gestures implemented in a way that allows some flexibility in the way you switch between apps. So far I feel like a gesture based UI is going to be a major change for iOS users with some interesting concepts to come.

webOS.

Y'all have no idea how great webOS was. It's a shame that Palm and HP couldn't break into the mobile phone game succcessfully. Maybe a home-buttonless iPhone won't cost $1000 in three years.

Furthermore, they could put this in non-X phones and move the control panel to the top (like the X).

i think the person in the video is unnecessarily going with the rainbow swipe ;)
Hope you're right. That's incredibly annoying to watch when it's just a swipe left or right at the button along the thin grey bar.

I wish people would view the notch not as Apple screwing the pooch, but as the pooch allowing itself to be screwed.

I'm joking :) it just came to my mind when reading your post.

I can't see anything except that stupid notch. When switching apps and it shows the full app for a second without the notch and then bam the notch is back it really bothers me for some reason.

Some people probably can process it that way. So far looking at all of the demos, my eyes and brain just aren’t cooperating to see it that way. I see it as @vincebio described. It looks like a bite taken out of the apple!

It just isn’t a user friendly design. It conflicts with how some of us process visual images. My eyes are irresistibly drawn away from the content to the gaping black “bite” taken out of the lighter background. It’s the complete opposite of the immersive experience, for me, that the otherwise edge-to-edge display was supposed to convey.

Getting back to the topic of the new swiping gestures, as long as all the required swiping to navigate the operating system does not conflict with the swiping and screen touching required to navigate the apps within the operating system, this should be a fun new way to interact with the phone. I do suspect my elderly relatives will have a challenge with it. It depends on how much flexibility will be required of their arthritic hands to implement the required gestures quickly and easily.

I agree it is pretty jarring at first, but I'm sure it'll be one of those things you'll just get used to in time.

iPhone EX, I just can’t get used to call it iPhone 10
Like OSX (ex) never called it OS 10
Anyways the demo looks good

Yeh me too (can't get used to it) and I still pronounce OSX as OS ex, instead of 10.
You have to wonder what the iPhone 11 will be called ... therefore will it be:
- iPhone XI
- iPhone 11 ... or will people get confused and think that it reads as iPhone II as in iPhone 2
- iPhone Eleven ... so no one gets confused between numbers and roman numerals.

If Apple release a Plus size iPhone X, say with a stylus, then I wonder if they'll call it iPhone Pro?
We could see an iPhone Xs and an iPhone Pro in 2018.
