Here the app switching mechanism looks different from the Keynote demo. In the Keynote demo, Craig simply swiped horizontally across the bottom of the screen. Why is it different here? I like the Keynote demo swiping much better.

I think this is just another way of going through apps. The one from keynote you will have to swipe halfway up and hold. That could still be an option.

who will keep an X for 4 years?
I'd say 90% of people buying an X over the next few weeks - will be upgrading again next year
Are we really pretending the X will end up in a landfill a year after purchase?

No. It will remain in someone's hands until it dies wether it's the original purchaser or the 3rd owner from Swappa. Since iOS devices are supported for so long, the devices remain in use for a very long time vs. Android (i.e. Samsung OLED) devices.

Defend it all you like, but OLED burn-in is absolutely a real thing. And we aren't just hammering on LG for making terrible P-OLED panels; the best Samsung is capable of producing (i.e. Note 8 and presumably iPhone X) will have burn-in too.

I know ya'll want to believe Apple has some secret software mojo to totally prevent this, but they don't, unless every pixel will constantly dance back and forth (they won't).

OLED is certainly beautiful (I love my Note 8) but there are real life issues with burn-in. Apple users largely are unaware of this, like they are unaware you can't mount a Qi plate in your car and use/charge your iPhone 8 at the same time...it drains faster than it charges. Samsung's fast Qi is better, but nothing beats a direct wire connection while using the phone/navigation/music/screen.

I'm not trying to be a negative nelly here, just being realistic. It's naive and disingenuous to suggest burn-in is a total non-issue with the space age X. Time will tell.

i believe there’s another one to change apps too i saw it on youtube a while back , they the guy was swiping left and right on that little little at the bottom but this looks way cooler

The app switching is so fluid and smooth. Looks great.

The problem I've always had with iOS app switching, is that it's really just the last screen shot that you come back to... and then it takes a second or two for the actual app to restart.

This is totally unlike my Android devices where the app is usually instantly ready to use when you switch to it.

Has this delay changed with later iOS hardware?

This could be done on the iphone 7's and 8's if they would leverage 3D touch. They used to have it with a long press on the left side of the screen to launch the app switching but they removed it with iOS 11.

Yes, this. I don't think you need to swipe like this to do it. A simple left/right swipe works.

But don't a lot of apps have a simple right or left swipe function? I'm picturing some conflicts here and am curious to see how this all works together.

The home bar or whatever they are calling it is in a designated "safe area". Apple won't allow other app interactions in the same spot as the home bar. I forget the name of it.

Apple hasnt specified if they have developed a way to minimize burn in have they? Almost forgot about the burn in myself haha
Not sure if there’s an answer to this already (a bit late to the game here), but in the code leak there was a string for “burn in mitigation.” So it would appear to be the case.

i hope soo... i hope so

I hope all those boundary controls can be turned off for games like PacMan or else the game will swipe away when I try to change directions to get away from ghosts with a swipe at the edge of the screen.

So swiping is much harder, you need to do the rainbow swipe. It would be nice if while doing that doing that a colorful rainbow should show up and some unicorns flying above it.

^ This.
My X might last only a year, if they release a plus version next fall!
Yeah who knows. I realize this gets expensive after a while, but for those who can afford to get the latest stuff from Apple and want to pay for it, I can't see keeping the X for longer than 2 years. I'm sure it will be a nice device 4 years from now though. I tend to keep my iPads for a long time though.

You don’t have to rainbow swipe, the OP talked about this on Reddit. Also, 3D Touch for switching between apps is back in iOS 11.1.

Never had any problems with 3D Touch app switching. Still wish they would bring it back. Switching to a "distant" app would still be faster.

This is why I was laughing when people were whining about the awful 3D-touch-the-left-edge gesture finally being removed.
That gesture is so finicky and it interferes with any app that lets you 3D touch something near the left edge of your phone, such as the thumbnail of a post.

This gesture however is perfect and I immediately fell in love with it when Craig demonstrated it on stage!

Is there any way to pre-order the X on the 27th without being with a major carrier? The unlocked option doesn't show up yet (like it does with the 8/8+) and if you choose one of the carriers it requires you to enter your account information with them to proceed. Is there any other way to get one on the 27th without having those credentials?

That device was running a slightly different version of the os and it should be how it was presented in the keynote when the product launches. I personally know the person who recorded the video.

I wish there was a plus version of this.
Why? This has a bigger screen at 5.85” than the plus does at 5.5”... it just has a smaller form factor making it closer in size to the current 4.7” phones.

It remains to be seen if Apple’s “software mojo” will actually help to mitigate the burn in with OLEDs. They have stated that there is something in the software at play to reduce the amount of burn in. They never said the Display will be immune to burn in with their solution. I don’t think it will be a “constant dance,” but I believe the device will detect when it is in an idle state with the display still on and will shift pixels slightly.

They added that feature back in the iOS 11.1 betas.

It really depends on the app and how they handle their app going into the background. Most apps don’t have a delay unless the os removed it from memory for a different app. I really only deal with that the most when my device is in low power mode, but even then the apps will usually load up pretty quickly.

They did bring it back in the beta for 11.1
