Because you are activating the phone through Apple then go on to activate through the carrier.

Mine finally worked (over the air). BTW, it offers to upgrade to 11.1 during the setup process. Finally! I'm sure everyone else will start getting activated soon as well (if they haven't already). I didn't do anything special... just kept retrying.

The last couple times, I held down the right button by itself and selected the "Start Over" option. On the 2nd try, it worked. But I'm sure it was just lucky timing.

Has anyone else had it say it can't verify your information with AT&T? (SSN and zip)

I get the same error but I'm on Verizon. I'm SO confused. It's been like 8 hours. I go back and forth between Apple and Verizon support because they keep blaming each other. They make me try the same thing over and over again because each time I go back it's a different person. Let me know if you get yours fixed.

Same problem here - each says it's the other
And what makes it even better is that they want me to call for support, but I can't really do that with a phone that's not activated!

I was getting the same thing. I held down the right button and chose Start Over. Then it went through right away. If it appears to be stuck, just hold down the right button and start over, and repeat that process if it gets stuck again. In my experience, once it's stuck, there's no point in waiting. I waited 15 minutes 3 times before doing the start over trick.

Mine put up a message saying ATT will email me when Activation is complete and I can set up the phone otherwise until then. 2 hours later no call.

How long should I wait?

one false start then worked. att. did seem i went thru a couple versions software setup, on pins and needles. watch set up unclear. think i will wait til tomorrow to follow on that. my head hurts.
very pretty silver 64. faceid flawless. first poop animojis sent—had to. :p immediately slid into clear luvvitt case.

I just activated my phone (AT&T). It failed the first time after a minute, and on the second attempt worked flawlessly.

Lost track of how many times I've started over. I have little hope this is going to work tonight

Don't give up. It took several hours before mine finally just worked. I agree with others that, if you're watching the spinner for more than 10 minutes, it's probably not worth waiting any longer. Hold down the right button, select Start Over, and try again. If you get tired of trying, do something else for a bit and then come back to it. All these problems are just congestion. It'll work when it works. I'd bet most who are persistent will get activated over the next few hours if they haven't already.

Good luck!

I talked one final time to an Apple rep (escalted to tier 2 senior rep) and after failed multiple attempts at troubleshooting he connected me to a Verizon technical support who is blaming the upper Verizon management guys and that they are aware of the issue and trying to fix it but no estimate on when. She doesn't even know if it will happen this weekend (horrible!). Apple guy checked himself out after that and the Verizon support made me just power off my phone and try again over and over. I'm still on call but I doubt this will lead anywhere. I'm so disappointed. Everyone's having a blast with their new phones and I'm sitting here trying to just get the phone to work. I need it to work by Monday! Rep also told me she's gonna reactivate my old sim on my old phone so I can use that and make and receive calls while the Verizon guys try to fix the activation process. I don't know how there is still an issue, after all these hours, and they still don't know when it can be fixed?! I want some kind of compensation over my lost day. I've been up since 6 AM to get this phone and ever since I got it in the morning it's been going downhill.

I'm ****ed I guess. My phone said activation was pending, and it let me set everything up, but I have no cellular data. Can't make phone calls, etc. No clue what to do now. I'm sure if I call AT&T they'll just tell me there's an issue.

I got the same. I just used my old sim and it works.

I'll let you know in a couple weeks when activation completes (been a few hours now).

Oh, hey! This reminds me of activating the original iPhone via AT&T. How sweet of them to offer this anniversary experience to everyone who missed it in 2007.

:D

Yes, it's so nostalgic. Brings me back to a simpler time when my rates were half what I pay now.

Where's the crying laughing emoji when you need it?

Has anyone else seen this message? Starting to worry.

I also got the "AT&T will email you" message about 30 minutes ago when I was setting up my phone for the first time. Knowing how badly both AT&T and Apple screwed up the reservation system for AT&T customers, I'm not holding out much hope that this particular issue gets resolved anytime soon either. What a mess.
