Was the 5th replacement better?
1st replacement was due to lint in camera lense, second was for a literal peice of hair in the camera lense , third and fourth were for oled issues and the last was an oled issue since I refused the fourth in store. Through all of those I wasn’t paying attention to the speaker so I have no idea,

If you ask me I think this thread is somewhat pointless, a lot of the audio clips you guys post here I listen on my X and yes it sounds bad, however it also sounds bad on my MacBook, and all the other small speaker devices I have. I think if you guys understood speakers and their diaphragms a little bit more you would understand these faults are somewhat normal for smaller speakers. I’m just here to watch the show.

There are so many more iPhone defects like Sharp edges between the glass and the metal band, or the OLED banding issues, to be worried about, some of which I currently have on this 5th replacement, I just don’t care anymore to try again.

Just got back from the local Apple retail store where after some usual nonsense and waiting I was able to return my iPhone X and purchase a brand new one. Same model 256gb Space Grey Verizon with build week Q and from the same factory as the previous model DN which I believe is Foxconn in China; I wonder if all the Verizon 256gb SG come from the same factory???

Sadly it has all the same problems as the original, the yellow tint to the screen, the metallic noise though the earpiece during calls and the crackle on the speakerphone. To add insult to injury this one seems to have voice issue on the other end, spoke to a couple of people that told me they hear a metallic/raspy echo when I call them. I tried my old iPhone 7 Plus and called the same two people without their knowledge and they both said that the metallic/raspy echo was gone, as soon as I switched back to the X the hear it again...

This is just beyond ridiculous for a $1,400 phone...

Don't know what to do now; I am sitting in front of my computer wondering if I should restore my iCloud backup on the new iPhone X and just endure all the issues (including the new one with listeners) or restore my old iPhone 7 Plus, return the X and forget about it for now...

This is not the experience I was expecting from the most expensive flagship phone Apple has ever produced...

Thanks for sharing. I understand speakers and realize that they should not rattle the way mines were on speaker phone calls at 50-60% volume. To each his own, we all have things we pay more or less attention to and will accept or not.

to each his own, very true indeed, Hope you get your issue resolved. Good luck.

I returned mine back on my 8 Plus which looks boring but works just fine. I’m just watching the show like you at this point to see if I’ll reconsider buying another. Hope you get one you are happy with, we pay too much money to settle.

Just got my 2nd replacement today (so third phone overall) and it still has the same issue. To say I'm disappointed is understatement.

So I called up Apple and they escalated my case. The woman I spoke to was great and informed me that it is an issue that Apple is aware of and that their engineers are looking into. She said she forward all serial numbers of my defective iPhones to the engineers so that can look into it further.
I told her that at this stage the only acceptable thing for me would be a refund, so that is probably getting processed tomorrow (as its the weekend currently).
I'm going to use my old iPhone until I get wind that this issue has been resolved once and for all before I look into purchasing the X again.

To those saying the issue doesn't exist, either you got a good batch, or are perhaps unhindered by the issue.
But after speaking to Apple today, it really does seem like something they are 100% aware of and trying to resolve.

I was told I could not get a refund because , even though I had a replacement, I had to return any phone within the 2 week period of when I first bought. So I guess you only have 2 weeks to keep exchanging it hoping to get a decent one ? So I will have to keep returning I guess until I get one I can hear people on!

Simple solution; don’t buy iPhone X until next year February or later when they address this issue and fix it. Now because of the holidays people are stoked on this phone and everyone wants it. If they would acknowledge that there is an issue with their product than no one would buy it and they would loose a ton of money. A phone which costs this much should be flawless, there is no room for error and this kind of defects is unacceptable. I think Apple rushed the production of this phone and that’s why this is happening. They are churning them out like crazy with low quality control. I also purchased one space grey 256GB. Same crackle and rattle. I got a refund and thinking to maybe buy in the future or maybe not.
I rather just use my 3 year old iPhone 6 which might be outdated but still the speakers work like they should.
What’s the point having a fancy high tech phone with bad speakers?
That’s the most basic function in a phone, it has to be clear.
If I spend 1880 dollar on a phone I expect quality. Not just okay.
Same problem with my MacBook Pro touch bar. Paid almost 5000 dollars for it and every time I charge it I can feel the electric current in the metal body. Sometimes gives a little shock too.
Apple products are not the same as they used to be sadly. Good design which looks beautiful but the build quality is cheap and not worth the money you spend. I used to buy this brand because of quality , but now it’s been a huge let down for me.

^^ This.

Couldn't agree more.

I agree and mentioned that earlier. There is no way Apple will acknowledge this issue. They did it for the iPhone 8’s speaker issue because they knew it would not sell big and they were just trying to get more money out of that 2014 design. Plus the 8’s issue was software and the X is likely hardware. No way they are going to acknowledge if it’s hardware and can’t be patched with a quick software update.

I notice that comparing to 8+ this x has too much treble audio which can be a culprit of this noise. Apple can tweak eq a bit that can fix this issue. Lets see what they do. My return date is 1/8 next year so i am still waiting. I love everything else

I think if anyone is still in their return window they should return it. Not take any chances. Software update won’t fix this. I was told on the phone by Apple staff to update the phone not using wifi but plugged onto my computer using iTunes. They told me this way the update will override any bugs. What does not make sense to me is when updates come out it usually says to fix minor bugs and etc. So if it’s true the update won’t override bugs through wifi update why don’t they mention that you should update through ITunes for the update to work and fix the bugs. An update should work either way anyway. So I tried it and also tried factory restore through iTunes and what a suprise that it still cracked and distorted. I think it’s should not be a gamble when you purchase something anymore. But with Apple now days it is. I remember when I ordered the iPhone X I was hoping afterward to get a working model with no issues. Honestly every Apple product I bought recently had defects. The only ones that were perfect was my iPhone 4 and MacBook Pro purchased in 2009.
They should send out like 5 phones when you purchase 1 so you can try all and maybe 1 will be good enough to keep. The rest you could return. Or offer to test in the store before you buy and pay for it. I really loved this brand but lost faith in it. Too much pain in the ....

How come you have such a long return date? Which country are you in?
In Australia we have 2 weeks only

In the US if you purchase an iPhone from an Apple retail store or have it delivered from the Apple online store between November 15th and December 25th, you have until January 8th to return the phone instead of the usual 14 days. This why some of us are wondering if instead of returning our iPhone X (second one for me) we should use them for a few weeks and wait for a potential software update that tweaks the treble to bass ratio on the earpiece speaker; if not it can always go back before 1/8

Ok, this is getting worse in 11.2. Now I have a popping sound when opening or closing an YouTube video and the external speaker distortion on phone calls is even worse in 11.2. On 11.1.2 I could hide it by lowering the volume with 4-5 lines but now it is present even on 50%...

It is a defect on early models. I’ve tried 4 that we’re made made November and all were fine.

This is not true at all. I received an iphone x from tmobile 3 days ago and it was manufactured between the 11 and 17 of November and the too speaker was terrible! I would say unbearable..i went to the apple store and they gave a new replacement which sounds better but still has the crackle on high volumes. So i believe all the claims about early production are just nonsense.

Love the phone but I was wondering if anyone has had any issues with the speakers slightly sounding a little crackling whenever max volume. Noticeable on certain songs and even my ring tone which was bought from the iTunes Store.

I compared it to my 7 plus and that one didn’t have a slight crackle.

Thanks guys
yes i have the same issue with iphone x

I’ve been saying that since day 1. Been through three units total—all presented the same speaker issue, and some had lint under the sapphire camera lens.

Some called me too picky, others agreed.

At the end of the day, even as a hardcore fan, we all know this phone was a year too early to deliver to market.

My point has been proven when leaked the 2018 lineup that doesn’t consist of this mix/match of 4-year old designs with 8/8+ and the radically different 10.

They will not address the issue publicly because they cannot fix this with an iOS patch, this is hardware related. This is a huge liability on their end, they’d have to recall their phones if they agreed to a design flaw—which they obviously will not do.

The speaker design is the culprit. The slit is half the size of the 8/8+ to make up for the space due to the many components in the notch. I’m betting my money that next year’s iteration will have a wider opening allowing for more air to come out and prevent any rattling.

At $1200 I felt great returning this half-baked product to wait it out an extra year when they aren’t rushed into delivering some anniversary non-sense in 2018. They clearly *needed* the 10 to come this year—we would have otherwise called them lame, after all, the 8 looks just like the 6 from 4 years ago.

I’m a huge Apple guy and have been since the introduction of the iPod and white acrylic iBook—that’s almost 2 decades ago. But I simply no longer care to buy what I’m told to buy just because it’s from Apple. They’ve missed the mark big time this time around and even if I miss the 10’s screen, I can use my phone as a phone. Isn’t that the point after all?

Exactly I’d rather have a PHONE with clear sounding speakers. Should have put less attention on those corny animojis and more on the speakers.

I have been told the same by people that probably I’m imagining it because if you look for a problem you will find it and I’m too picky. But seriously if I buy something for this much money shouldn’t it be flawless?
I will try to buy again next year in February or March, but if it will be still the same I will return it and maybe buy the next model they release.
In a way what Apple is doing now to their loyal customer who always purchase their products is disgusting.
They should address this issue.
Maybe they will do a recall after 2 years like they did with the iPhone 5 for its battery.

I gave up and bought an iPhone 8 Plus. Sounds crystal clear on phone calls both on the internal and external speakers even at maximum volume.
For me call quality is really important so I'll wait another year for the improved model.

Lol why do people do this ? If you ask the Genius you should be able to keep your current iPhone until the new one comes in, I know because I’ve had 5 replacements
That's what I asked and over the phone he said I was able to keep it until the new comes in, but that's unfortunately not going to be the case with me.

I spoke with an engineer they call me from USA, because i've reported this problem on their website, so I think Apple knows this problem. I've returned my phone for other problems (dust in the camera), now I'm waiting for my new iPhone X, it will arrive 12 December, or maybe sometime earlier. I'll report if newer models have this issue.
