I might try that later, if not I’m gonna bring it back to Verizon for an exchange. Was the crackling apparent at high volume before you tried your fix?
On launch day the crackling was annoying and noticeable on max volume. Enough to the point I considered returning it. But I figured I’d give it a few days and see if it would change. And as of yesterday it’s gone. And still gone as of the writing of this post.

What was your solution!!!

Yes. i notice the same problem. I called tech support and spoke with a supervisor for over 90 minutes explaining and expressing my concern and was told to go to Apple and they can take a look and reset the software and maybe that’s the issue and if not Im within the “14” day return policy. But i don’t want that i want my phone fixed!!!
Also she said I am the first one to complain about this. So maybe if everyone calls AppleCare we can get the ball rolling.

I called them yesterday too and they said they didn’t have any other reports of this. Maybe their internal tracker is slow to update. In the end the specialist said to take it back to POS to get a replacement.

Just using the speaker. Keep playing music for a while at three levels below max. And let it break in, in a sense. It took two days. But it eventually corrected on it’s on. Strangely

hope this works... the max volume crackle hasnt broken in yet

We shouldn’t even have to do this after all we went through to get the phones. But here we are. Just ease up the volume and watch how clear it gets.

i mean, thats not fair... all expensive audio equipment needs to be broken in as well... and they are FAR more expensive than an iphone x

I don’t have much experience with audio playback equipment but being a guitarist, I’ve played through many new, high quality amplifiers. The sound of broken in speakers for sure gets better, but I’ve never heard a new set sound like breadcrumbs stuck in them.

Just used another x for the first time other than mine and his front speaker is solid. And he hears my issue.. our issue. So let’s see what happens when I go to my appt Tuesday

I haven’t been able to reproduce the crackle with music playing but can definitely hear it with calls on speakerphone at high at volume.

I suggested a solution to this in the previous page, the solution is that the speaker needs to break-in and therefore will correct itself after getting some solid hours of music/audio playback. That’s the only solution I could come up with unless it’s a codec issue as it was with the iPhone 8 which would mean a software update would need to come out to correct it

I’ve done exactly what I’m suggesting above and I don’t hear any more crackle on my X, I listened to a joe rogan podcast episode which was 3 hours long today and the crackle is indeed gone for the most part

This video is a good tester

The crackle really kicks in between 30-45 seconds at 80-100% volume

So frustrating... I just want a media outlet to report the issue.. Ahem.. @MacRumors

Have you played the YouTube piano video yet? Distorting like mad on my iPhone X. Can’t imagine that kind of distortion magically going away.

Wow it’s really noticeable on that clip. Totally unacceptable and better not be on my new one when I get the exchange.

I just went to Verizon, the guy told me it was just distortion . I tried out the store unit and it had the same crackle sound at high volume. It must just need to be broken in like they said. Well here goes nothing. I use bell tower ringtone as reference if anyone needs to hear the crackle sound!

Bell tower sounds a bit trebly on my phone but it doesn’t sound nearly as distorted as that piano video.

When I play the piano video there is some serious air being pushed out of both the top and bottom speaker. I played it on my home stereo and it sounds like it was recorded with too much gain.

I took a speakerphone call earlier and it sounded a little trebly but I heard no discernible rattle.

Update. Just played it on my 9.7” iPad Pro and it made the speakers rattle like crazy. This song is evil and I hate it.

Yeah I think it is the clip. My 2nd gen 12.9 rattles like crazy and have to turn down to 50% to not hear it. Also 70% on my iPhone 7 plus to not hear it. Never had issues with speakers on my devices with playing at level 100%.

It’s not just that clip though, it’s pretty much everything. For me anyway.

A side question...has anyone noticed the ear speaker doesn’t get as loud on max volume on phone calls as it did on previous generations?

While playing music it can get loud but not on calls.

This is volume level dependent, it looks like hardware defect/issue.
Probably the only way they can "fix" it , is to reduce the maximum volume by 20% and call that 100%.

The 8+ crackling was another thing, it was present on all volume levels during calls, it was a codec issue from my understanding.

On the X, even loud phone calls produce that distortion, and calls/audio playback have different audio paths. Only common part is the actual hardware speaker.

So yeah, Apple is such a piece of crap these days when it comes to attention to detail/QC ...
The in-call crackle has been fixed.
In-app crackle is still present.
