im not saying this didn’t fix anyone’s phones, but I really don’t think that’s what speaker break in does. It may make a speaker sound better, but it’s not going to erase defects in sound.

I have the same thing. It's really noticeable when using speakerphone for calls on max volume. Will try this break-in thing and report back. Thanks for the suggestions.

At Apple store right now fellas appt is in about an hour. Trying other 10s and hear the same issue. Idk what’s gonna happen or how this isn’t a known issue

No idea. If many of the Xs have this I can’t see how more people aren’t commenting. Some say theirs doesn’t have it though. Either they all have it and some people aren’t hearing it, or some are better than others. I guess we’ll see.

I have played wu tang forever for 1 h and 30 minutes at max volume, the crackle it’s almost gone.

Mine does not have it for sure. I tried playing music at max volume. It sounds crystal clear, maybe even a bit better than what I had on an 8 Plus. That one sounded a bit distorted at its max. I tried a call on speaker last night as well. Nothing out of order.

Hey guys, so here’s a Tip for breaking in the speaker. Go to accessibility and go down to below “hearing” there’s a toggle where you can move which speaker is being used more the left or the right and just move it all the way to the left or right. And then play hip hop music or bass heavy music and make sure the sound is coming from the earpiece speaker and just keep blasting music for awhile. Mine’s improving the more I play songs from it. Will keep posting my results til it goes away!

Has to do with iOS, happens sometimes with my iP7+, too. Didn’t happen with iOS10. And if i remember correctly it was already an issue during iOS9(fixed later till now)

* update Fellas. He heard the issue right away it passed diagnostics and he said he’ll “swap” it out. Yes it is a “certified “ not in a brand new box new phone. He’s bringing it out now and we’re gonna test it. But 1 out of 8 phones on display here have the same issue. Let’s see how this goes

The track “My Love” by Blackmil is an excellent track to use to break-in the speaker. Some incredible bass and heavy hitting notes in that track.

At this point after playing all sorts of music on my X since Friday the Crackle is non-existent.

Love the phone but I was wondering if anyone has had any issues with the speakers slightly sounding a little crackling whenever max volume. Noticeable on certain songs and even my ring tone which was bought from the iTunes Store.

I compared it to my 7 plus and that one didn’t have a slight crackle.

Thanks guys

Same issue here. Terrible speakerphone quality. Noticed it immediately upon getting it out of the box and playing with it in a matter of minutes. Everything crackles above 60-70%. Cannot use the device on a call with speakerphone on without cringing. The worst is probably Siri or Siri announcing caller ID when a call comes in.

Have been on the phone with Apple for an hour and they gave me the same line: 'How strange, you are the only one to report such issue. We do not see anything related to iPhone 10's speakerphone crackling' but we'd be happy to have yours sent in for repair.

For the price point, I simply refuse to have anything sent for repair and I will not go through the Genius Bar ordeal to have them hear what most likely they say is 'within range' in the back of a crowded store.

Furthermore, breaking-in speakers is somewhat of a myth. Perhaps on high-end systems you'd notice an improvement on clarity, but something for this size--very unlikely. It is clearly a design flaw. The speakerphone is embedded in this notch that has a dozen components. I'm betting my money that when the sound reaches a certain frequency, it is simply rattling the earpiece or making a component nearby resonate in a way that's audible to us.

I'm returning my phone and will revert to my trusty 7+ until they've figured that one out in the meantime. Mad at myself more than anything for being the early adopter ironing bugs out for everyone out there. Not this year. Not for nearly $1300.

* update. He gave me the new phone said they received it when they got the new phones on the 3rd so it’s a new phone. Great. Bad news I swore I heard it in the store and he said he didn’t hear it anymore and I obviously felt stupid and paranoid like maybe he’s right. I’m in my car now. In complete silence... rattle. So annoying. So ****ing annoying and he said this was their last one. So I guess I’ll be spending a good amount of time on the phone with apple about this and in the meantime will be trying to “break in” this new speaker which is now one day old rather 4 days. GREAT! Worst experience of my life

Yeah no one seems to believe this
This is not a breaking in thing, at least what I have.

Maybe they all have it. I have no idea at this point.

Pretty damn sure they all have it to a certain extent. The notch is hard to manufacture. They’ve reduced components size to avoid the notch to turn into a full blown bandaid on top of the screen. It’s the first cycle with such design—bound to have issues.

And the Genius Bar experience is exactly what I’d like to avoid for such price tag. To be made to look like a fool when I’d come back and say ‘oh the new one is also rattling.’ No thanks.

I’ve tested 5 units around me, they all rattle the way mine does. Not a random issue affecting 3 customers, clearly.

And if anything, I do not want to end up with another rattlebox that has a serial number reflecting it’s a certified replacement when mine was 4 days old brand new.

No hesitation in returning it.

I didn’t think about the notch affecting component size. That’s a good thought. Oh well. Leaning towards returning it now. Shame, I like the phone.

I still don’t understand how this is not being reported all Over the place.

Most likely because it’s a proper design flaw. Not some software patch fixable issue. They cannot reengineer the entire thing because of a handful of people reporting it online. Same as with the bend on the 6, that somehow was quietly corrected on the 6S. It would nearly break your arm off when you tried replicating the issue a year later on the S variant.

Every single iPhone 10 I’ve tested is exhibiting the issue.

Next year’s iPhone won’t rattle—I’ll bet my money on this one also.

I'm pretty sure most of the iPhone x will have the problem then not. I think people just don't use the iPhone at 100% like we do so most don't even notice it. it is 25% louder than the iPhone 7. Just break in the speakers, it does help.

I’ve played music for days at max volume. It still hasn’t budged. Siri is still a rattlebox, so is my ringtone and I cannot be on a call with the speakerphone on.

There’s no breaking in a speakerphone that has so little moving parts being it’s the size of a fingernail.

Ultimately, most audiophiles will explain that breaking in a speaker takes a matter of minutes if not seconds—certainly not days on end at max volume. At times, most moving parts that require ‘breaking-in’ are broken in simply by connecting power during assembly testing prior to end user purchase.

And for $1300, no one should be expecting to go through such nonsense.

I’ve had everything Apple since they nearly went bankrupt and had just launched the iBook and iPod back in the days.

This, for $1300 is something I no longer care to either defend or justify. They missed the mark and hopefully next year’s iteration will have a speaker that doesn’t require breaking in for a week, or to be used up to 70% before all hell breaks loose.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the phone but this is a serious issue I cannot live with as I use my phone on speakerphone conference calls daily.

It’s possible it could be an EQ thing they can fix or at least mitigate through an update. I notice even on the lower speaker there is some static as well, but it’s not really noticeable because the EQ is different.

Only wish Macrumors would report it. Obviously they don’t.

[doublepost=1510106117][/doublepost]Yes I thought it was just me. It doesn't happen with music so it makes me wonder if it just the type of audio. Only when the phone is on speaker on max volume on facetime or a phone call and the person is yelling or something I notice a slight crackle at times. So idk...

I am having trouble hearing on mine. And people I'm talking to say it sounds muffled at times. I keep moving it around to try to hear the caller and press it to my ear. What the heck. I like the phone very much , dont really want to exchange it or whatever. Do you think it could be related ? I live an hour from apple store and work long hours making it hard to get down there. I guess I will have to call tech support. Any tips?

Your best bet get it replaced. Either out of box or their certified replacement. Spoke to the “ genius” today at my appt he only had one replacement left and they were delivered on the 3rd with pre orders. So this IS a new phone. Spoke with tech and customer support over two hours going over if this is true and due to the life cycle of the phone. It is in fact a brand new phone minus them giving a brand new in box phone. But this IPhone X has not been out long enough to have “recycled” or used parts in it. I was advised maybe a month or so down the line or obviously later in the year if you need to replace it will most likely fall under the category of “recycled”. So rest assured if you’re going to do the swap do it NOW. It may or may not fix the issue but in the end due to the timing it’ll 1. Bring more attention to this issue and 2. Give you an opportunity to get another phone that may not have this issue. Choice is up to you. I’m sticking with this phone and going to try this “break in” method that I don’t believe in and see where it gets me. Good luck everyone. I wish I could say this was fun lol
