What I don't understand about the X, is why the heck do they call it bezeless? It has pretty big bezels on the side and would have looked much better if the sides were bezeless like the Note 8. They are almost as big as the previous gen....

I don't think any of the phones available right now (including the X) should be called bezel-less. They all have some form of bezels or notch that prevent an all front screen.

But for the X, if it somehow didn't have the notch, and had the screen fill the whole front, I'd be tempted to call it bezel-less. I can see what you're saying regarding the frame and how the S8 has the screen curve over to the sides. Having used the S8 many times in person though, I really don't see the appeal of it. Just seems like the screen gets distorted going into a curved edge. Is there a reason for that to happen? I'd rather have a bit of a frame so that while holding it you're not touching the screen with your palm/hand at the sides.

This thread is a low point. I'm sorry.

You would need to be pretty darn bored to reply. Then again, we ARE waiting 😀

That's me for sure this morning, LOL.

But it's just not "wow" like Apple used to be.

I get that, the last time I was wowed by an iPhone it was the iPhone 5. The 6 didn't "wow" me much cause the antenna banding made it look like an unfinished design but I think once I see the iPhone X in person i'll be wowed. I will say this once I got the iPhone 8 plus it felt like this is how the 6,7,8 series was meant to look. It looked finally finished.

It does have bezels. Don’t forget, the screen is curved so the bezels just aren’t as obvious when you look at the galaxy straight on... but they are there.

I wouldn't say that the iPhone X design is outdated but I think they're going for a signature look that they don't want to change much.

For the past few years, Samsung has finally started producing some beautiful phones with great build quality and really nice screens. Since fewer people own them, Samsung phones look different and sleek--but they are playing catch up to Apple in some functional areas. There is still no *universal* Android equivalent to iMessage and Facetime and not all storage and color options are available in all markets. International LTE compatibility is hit or miss because even some flagship models are very regional. Then again, you've got fast charging out of the box and at launch Samsung gives away useful freebies like wireless fast charging stations, SD cards and other stuff that will cost a fortune from Apple.

I'm guessing the iPhone X will look better in person and FaceID will work very well--clearly millions will sell judging by how stressed people are on this forum about ordering. If people take issue with it, I bet it will something most haven't discussed until it's widely released. I think the gesture based UI might be hard for some to adjust too and there is some question as to whether the screen will be bright enough in well lit environments. We'll see.

Just disappointed that Apple is not state of the art anymore when it comes to iPhones.

I think it's important remember, this is a phone, not a piece of artwork. It's a device that's upgraded annually with refinements and matured over the course of its lifespan. I think this is a major change with the iPhone X and "design" is in the eye of the holder anyways.

It seems that even tech enthusiasts are starting to care more about looks than technology. It's like suddenly having bezels if the worst flaw a phone can have.

I decided to get a 8+ instead of the X because aside from OLED and FaceID, the two phones are literally the same technology, but everyone calls the 8+ "dated". Whatever floats your boat, but I'm not bothered by the fact that my phone has bezels.

They could've fixed the notch issue via software like many devs proposed to 'cut off' and make it black at the top since it's an oled screen.

And if they could've reduced the bezels on the sides (which are huge compared to other new phones coming out) the 'X' design could've still differentiated itself apart from other phones.

Instead they went full on notch just for the sake of differentiation I guess. It was not necessary at all and created a big UI mess which most devs talk about.

Let's face it: ALL phones in very near future are just going to be a sheet of glass. No more bezels. What will set them all apart is the UI/ UX.

So that's why in my opinion it was a wrong decision for Apple to go this way because they won't be easily changing it again and will be like this for at least 5 years if not longer.

It's just sad that Apple missed the opportunity to create an amazing stunner. The only feeling like that I had when Galaxy S8 was released. And Apple did not outdo Samsung even with FaceID and the stupid Animojis.

Just look at which phone is prettier/ nicer design wise. The phone on the left that will be available only end of year/ January 2018 or the phone on the right that was out since March/ April 2017. To me it's the right one.

The one on the right looks like a Samsung.

And why have a bezel at the bottom? Looks like crap. Go find yourself an Android you seem to admire so much.

Lucky for us, you aren't on Apple's design team.

Because iPhone X will be the same design for at least 2-3 (if not 4) years. Apple has gotten so lazy in terms of doing design innovations it takes forever while Samsung comes up with more innovative designs about every year and improve on it.

Just look how long the iPhone 6 design has been around. 4 years now and they call it 'iPhone 8'.
As soon as someone declares that the iPhone 7 and 8 are the same design as the 6, their design opinions are disvalidated. Proves they don’t understand design.

Apple was leading design innovation in every of its product categories and to me now it's just the MacBook Pro's and iPads that are great. But iPhones lag behind while they should out-innovate everybody design wise too.

You mean iPads with their still big bezels?
You mean MacBook Pros with the worthless Touch Bar?

I'm not a fan of the notch/dog ears OR my iPad's bezels OR my MBP's TB. But ultimately, I believe they are still best in class. I can't imagine the notch ruining a users experience. Apple is designing within the tech boundaries and time constraints. The other phones you cite have their own deficiencies in the way they "solve" the screen problem. Nothing is perfect. Pointless to have that kind of expectation.

I'm buying one because I want a bigger screen but a smaller footprint than the plus model. So suits my need just fine. The notch is not a deal killer. If you are looking for excitement in your life try New Zealand.

unless you want an improved camera.

That's a bit harsh and condescending, no? Also "disvalidated," isn't a word. To the layman the shell of the iPhone 6, 7, 8 are essentially the same. Heck, my iPhone 6 case fit my iPhone 7 just fine -- all the buttons lined up perfectly. Maybe I don't understand design. But if one has to have a pedigree in design to understand the nuances of the 6, 7, and 8 then it's going to be lost on consumers. The see the same phone -- with a glass back on the 8.

I see the same phone whether it be Scamsung, Apple, Google, LG etc etc etc.

I've never stopped anybody on the streets to ask "hey, what phone are you talking on" . The phone design crap is overrated. You all get rid of them within 2 years anyways.

Quick, someone name me one "Classic" phone that someone has rebuilt with newer hardware. There's only one I can think of.

For me, how quickly people jumped ship from the awe inspiring iphone 7 is the major tell. Now the 7 looks “outdated”. Well what about the x? It is already an outdated design. Other companies have actually implemented it better than Apple. We are at the point where anything Apple makes, we will justify it. Apple hit the sweet spot. Be late. Not really the best rendition of the minimal bezel screen, but it is from us, so...
The X is the best iPhone you can buy, and that is all that it is. The software doesn’t even take advantage of the screen. Need it for watching videos? Part of the video is obscured. Ok, you can make your video smaller to not obscure it, defeating the whole point.

I’m really sick to death of all this "bezels" talk. News flash: Less bezels does NOT = better phone. I have no idea why the majority of tech geeks seem to think this. You need some amount of bezel there so the damn thing is comfortable to hold without unintended touches or obstructing the view. Let’s just say you all had it your way and we had a phone that had a 100% screen to body ratio. Do you know how uncomfortable that would be in actual usage? You’d hear nothing but complaints because it is simply bad ergonomics.

You people need to be careful what you wish for because there are already complaints about the iPhone X and how the edge to edge (for the most part) display is compromised due to the notch. And by the way, when you look at side by side comparisons, the iPhone X is in the top 3 phones with the least amount of ‘bezel’, so I’m not sure what these complaints are for anyway. They pushed it as far as they could which is why we have the notch whilst still having a little bezel around the edges to make it comfortable to hold. Also, every other phone has a bottom chin while the iPhone X doesn’t. And yet we still have people whining about it.

I don’t think you people know what you really want. A 100% bezeless phone may look aesthetically pleasing and ‘futuristic’, but I’d hate to have a phone like that in day to day use.

Looks are in the eye of the beholder. there are only so many ways for designers to be innovative on a slab. the prices are what is most annoying as it prevents me from updating as often as I would like. I do not, nor will I ever buy any phone on the installment plan. So having said this I'll maybe be ready for a new device in 2020. By then probably $1500 is the norm for an Apple phone and even at that price the Apple gods probably STILL won't let me put the icons where I want.

The screen stretching to fill all 4 corners and the stainless steel body look pretty stunning in my opinion.
Sorry, I don't see it "stretching to fill all 4 corners - I see a black border all the way around.
And shiny, scratchy, slippery stainless steel is very dated.

Another case of Apple's brilliance - make any change, no matter how inexplicable, and that's the standard everyone has to match. Because Apple.

So your point is .............

Bezel less is NOT a good design. It’s a UX nightmare. I don’t understand where this fad has started from all of a sudden.
It's like fashion design. You can't keep wearing the same clothes and hairstyle. But there's only so many changes you can make - make it thinner! Make it curvier! Remove the headphone jack. Remove the home button. Make the bezels thinner. Change *something* dammit!

We started with flat icons, went to 3D, now flat and minimal is in. Stainless steel to wood grain, to candy color, blah blah blah.

They make it out to be more efficient, more usable, blah blah but it's nothing but fashion design. UI/UX people are fashion designers.

im buying the X because i buy my phones outright and keep it for 3 years. in 3 years time, the 8 plus will be crazily outdated designwise.
i cant switch to pixel 2, because i love imessage and and i love constant security updates - bad track record in android world, regardless of what they say.

I don't think the design is outdated at all. Its different, some people may like it or not, and have their preferences. It will surely be outdated when the phone itself is outdated, but then it will be replaced by a newer one.

iPhone X design already outdated. Check out all the new 'bezeless' phones coming out that have even less bezel and bigger screen/ body ratio. Not to speak of the ugly notch.

Just really makes me sad. I was hoping to be blown away by Jony Ive and his team to switch back to iPhone again yet my Galaxy S8 that will be half year older when iPhone X comes out will still look better and more state of the art than Apple's phone. And I'm sure Samsung's S9 (or X or whatever they call it) will be even sexier.

'X' looks clunkier compared to S8's slimmer design and uniform look. And X's chrome frame reminds me of diners for some reason and will look even uglier when scratches appear.

Apple going for that notch design means it will be at least 5 years like that hardware & software wise. One of the dumbest decisions Apple made lately along to use lightning port on iPhones but USB-C on everything else and creating a big dongle mess.

I wonder what happened to Jony Ive. Apple was leading design innovation in every of its product categories and to me now it's just the MacBook Pro's and iPads that are great. But iPhones lag behind while they should out-innovate everybody design wise too.

Apple is mainly a fashion brand, no more innovation or high tech after Jobs death. Making a new color or emotj is the most innovative so far.
