im buying the X because i buy my phones outright and keep it for 3 years. in 3 years time, the 8 plus will be crazily outdated designwise.
i cant switch to pixel 2, because i love imessage and and i love constant security updates - bad track record in android world, regardless of what they say.

I don’t understand the iMessage thing these days either. It literally was negated before it even dropped. The problem was that companies charged for text messages. iMessage fixed this. Before it dropped, carriers stopped charging for text messages. I thank iMessage for that, but we have unlimited text messages now. Additionally, Apple is late with the text message party with features within the app. They stole most of the features from popular texting apps that you can use on both OS’s.

It's like fashion design. You can't keep wearing the same clothes and hairstyle. But there's only so many changes you can make - make it thinner! Make it curvier! Remove the headphone jack. Remove the home button. Make the bezels thinner. Change *something* dammit!

We started with flat icons, went to 3D, now flat and minimal is in. Stainless steel to wood grain, to candy color, blah blah blah.

They make it out to be more efficient, more usable, blah blah but it's nothing but fashion design. UI/UX people are fashion designers.

Erm, not really. UI and UX are very different to each other and nowhere close to fashion designing. This is the basic problem, people don’t understand what it all means.

As soon as someone declares that the iPhone 7 and 8 are the same design as the 6, their design opinions are disvalidated. Proves they don’t understand design.

lol sure the back is slightly different.

Why do you think Apple constantly hides the front in all their PR/ marketing/ even on their website they've been mostly showing the back side for years now (go check Apple dot com now). It's because the front is always the same ugly old and the back is prettier.

Meanwhile the ugly old iphone SE continues to sell on an Iphone 5s body, edge to edge is overrated.

it's not about features or price.
all my friends and family use imessage. I have imessage groups with my dad, mum and sister.
friends from australia.
friend group in canada.

and it comes built in to the phone.

it's just a nice standard for communicating.

Sorry, I don't see it "stretching to fill all 4 corners - I see a black border all the way around.
And shiny, scratchy, slippery stainless steel is very dated.

Well sure, the screen has to fit in a casing of some sort.

And yes, stainless steel is very dated. How dare they use it in a product.

Another case of Apple's brilliance - make any change, no matter how inexplicable, and that's the standard everyone has to match. Because Apple.

Who says anyone has to match it? Choose which device you'd prefer to use and move on.

That's the purpose of the iPhone SE, is to use a pre-existing chassis and older parts to retain the price point. The phone was meant as an entry-level phone and for India'a commerce. Apple isn't going to put the latest hardware specifications into the SE, otherwise that would partially defeat the price point, aside from those who want a smaller form factor.

Focusing on this single feature, the "bezel-less" craze, is like buying a car after only looking at its tires. Sure, you may have a preference for a certain type of tire, but you can't ignore the entire car and call it outdated because it's tires are not what you like.

It doesn't make sense.

If anyone feels that the iPhone X is outdated (even though it hasn't been released yet) should cancel the preorder and buy a phone that better suits his/her needs. If, on the other hand, you want a great phone that happens to be the fastest mobile device on the market and happens to run (what I believe) to be the best mobile operating system in the world, then don't worry about the bezels and just buy it.

It's using parts from a phone that Apple is still selling, the point is this whole "outdated" is a joke. The SE would be a complete failure if it was up to "design". I bet if Apple crammed all the X specs into the SE it would be the best selling phone in the world.

I know this is just a thread about a ****-post from a troll, but...I *hate* the bezels in the S8, I’m interested in iPhone X because it pretty much has no bezels. The phone is as small in your hand/pocket as it could realistically be for that screen size until we get foldable screens, no wasted black space at the top and bottom, except for the notch, which isn’t fully wasted since they use the space on its sides for the status bar (which otherwise would remove useable screen space).

How does the X have no bezels?

It has the thickest bezels of them all (bezeless phones). I'd rather have a little bit on top & bottom than the ugly notch and thick side bezels. The X looks like you put a case on it or a rubber boat.

Of course it's not going to be a total wow anymore. Phone's have hit a brick wall in change and will be incremental upgrades at best now. What else can Apple do now? It is the same for most phones? What exactly did the Pixel 2 bring? No headphone jack and even worse bezels.

Phones have become like fridges. Only so much you can add.

I am not sure why we entertain these threads, but I have to disagree with you. I think the X is far and away better looking than anything out there. Everything else looks like cheap plastic with large bezels. Certainly not outdated in any way. All other phone makers moving forward will look to mimic Apple's design. Not sure what you are seeing, but okay. I guess don't buy it and move on?

I disagree with you here, because I think you're ignoring the big picture. OP's main issue, is the the notch is a compromise, and he's aware that apple keeps their designs for upwards of 2, 3, 4 years now, before redesigning.

Yes, this year is not a truly bezel free year, in terms of designs. I actually agree that the Pixel 2's bezels look like garbage (plasticy, and sunken in display look), but the S8, LG V30, soon to be Mate 10, all have "partial" bezel-less design that looks decent. More importantly, what we are looking at is that most likely late 2017-2018 these manufactures will be releasing their fully bezel-less designs. Look at the concept/prototype for the GS9.

Apple keeps their design for several years, so they have to get a jump on design since they don't plan on refreshing it. Other manufacturers get the opportunity to redesign their phones every year, and so a direct comparison of the iPhone X, and the S8, or V30 right now is fair; but just keep in mind you're probably going to be looking at the same exact iPhone X design 1-2 years from now, but instead it will be compared to fully bezel-less phones, that probably don't have the same ugly notch. Is it jumping the gun to critique on that now? Maybe, but it's a valid opinion to my mind.

Just my observations on the matter.

It all comes back to personal opinion. I don't see the notch as a compromise. This tech needs to go somewhere and I would rather the notch than a bezel.

Yeah that much is for sure. I could eat my words in another year or so depending on what apple's competition does, but considering they may now be going into facial recognition, they may also require some sort of bar type mechanism as well.

I know Samsung had to patents for a notch design in the works. I feel like competition will move in a similar direction ultimately, but we'll see. For me, the notch is a non issue. I feel like once you actually get the X in your hands and use it, you won't even really think about it.

This Apple you still worship is not the same Apple you remember from a decade ago. It's mid-1990's Apple that's just duping millions because they are stuck in their ecosystem thanks to proprietary software and services like iTunes, iMessages, iCloud, and so on.

Apple you know now is an imposter. You will be bored af with the iPhone X within a month once you realize glass rears suck, everyone in 2018 will own it, and nothing really amazing came from it except for a new design that's mediocre at best and Face ID that you may end up loving or hating.

This post-Jobs era is no longer the cool Apple you once knew. This new Apple is like the current LA Lakers. Still popular and expensive but no longer the best. Apple and the Lakers have never been the same since 2011. Since Jerry Buss died, downhill for the Lakers. Since Steve Jobs, downhill with Apple except in cash.

Steve Jobs never did it for the money. Tim Cook is bean counter. It's all about the money and nothing else. On a positive note for Apple, at least they have been innovative for a longer time since the Apple ][. How long has Google and Samsung been innovating again and with multiple industries (not just mobile).

Apple gets alot of blame when things like the iPod scroll wheel and multi-touch get completely overlooked. It isn't easy being innovative for 40 straight years.

iPhone X design -

Front: 8/10

Used to be 9 when I first saw it until realizing the notch could be distracting. White front iPhones already distract me enough.

Back: 5/10

The rears of Note8, V30, and Mate 10 are much nicer. Alas, Jony Ive lost his mind and Midas Touch years ago when iOS7 and iPhone 6 were introduced.

In fairness, my personal experience with ugly devices is actually a positive thing. My LG G5 gets criticized as well as my V20. Two of my favorite phones ever. Titanium silver S7 is one of the most beautiful and I didn't have a pleasant experience with it compared to my uglier Pixel.

Design is just design. Most people cover it up in cases and gets on with their lives. Like Han said about his Millennium Falcon, she may not look much but she got it where it counts.

X is a tick model. It will be improved maybe slightly with future revisions of it like what happened with the 5s and going from 6 to 8.

trust me, you have to hold one iphone x, from the top to bottom from each side and the weight are making one perfect compact premium device

I feel like no one was listening when Johnny Ives said that face ID had been in the works for 5 years. It took them 5 years to develope it! This was a deliberate design choice. It wasn’t a last resort.

They could've fixed the notch issue via software like many devs proposed to 'cut off' and make it black at the top since it's an oled screen.

And if they could've reduced the bezels on the sides (which are huge compared to other new phones coming out) the 'X' design could've still differentiated itself apart from other phones.

Instead they went full on notch just for the sake of differentiation I guess. It was not necessary at all and created a big UI mess which most devs talk about.

Let's face it: ALL phones in very near future are just going to be a sheet of glass. No more bezels. What will set them all apart is the UI/ UX.

So that's why in my opinion it was a wrong decision for Apple to go this way because they won't be easily changing it again and will be like this for at least 5 years if not longer.

It's just sad that Apple missed the opportunity to create an amazing stunner. The only feeling like that I had when Galaxy S8 was released. And Apple did not outdo Samsung even with FaceID and the stupid Animojis.

Just look at which phone is prettier/ nicer design wise. The phone on the left that will be available only end of year/ January 2018 or the phone on the right that was out since March/ April 2017. To me it's the right one.

MfIcMhw.jpg

I get what your saying but with the design of the X and the UI becoming gesture based could they not change the phones design and damn near whenever they want now???
