They could've fixed the notch issue via software like many devs proposed to 'cut off' and make it black at the top since it's an oled screen.

And if they could've reduced the bezels on the sides (which are huge compared to other new phones coming out) the 'X' design could've still differentiated itself apart from other phones.

Instead they went full on notch just for the sake of differentiation I guess. It was not necessary at all and created a big UI mess which most devs talk about.

Let's face it: ALL phones in very near future are just going to be a sheet of glass. No more bezels. What will set them all apart is the UI/ UX.

So that's why in my opinion it was a wrong decision for Apple to go this way because they won't be easily changing it again and will be like this for at least 5 years if not longer.

It's just sad that Apple missed the opportunity to create an amazing stunner. The only feeling like that I had when Galaxy S8 was released. And Apple did not outdo Samsung even with FaceID and the stupid Animojis.

Just look at which phone is prettier/ nicer design wise. The phone on the left that will be available only end of year/ January 2018 or the phone on the right that was out since March/ April 2017. To me it's the right one.

I cannot call it until I have both the jones in my hands, I’ve learned over the years it’s different in person, and with all the hate of the notch wait till you see all the apps that are developed using the tech in the true depth camera system.

With all the innovation talk that goes on in these forums I’m realky surprised folks don’t like Apple they may not be first but they will push the tech into another realm before anyone else does.

Not saying the 'X' is total trash.

But it's just not "wow" like Apple used to be.

Like I said I was so hoping to switch back to iPhone but it did not wow me enough and them not giving X the iPad Pro iOS version with the dock & multitasking is also disappointing.

iOS on the iPhone has not made any real advancements in ages. Still same old icon grid. Can't adjust anything unlike on Android.

Sorry but I disagree. I think the X is pretty wow and I can't wait to get one..

the one on the left definitely still looks like an iPhone.

(not meant as some sort of point regarding the S8 design vs X..
just meaning-- when i saw this picture with the two phones next to each other, it made me realize the X, while definitely different than what we're used to, will still seem very much iPhone like once we're using it.. (even when it's off))

I don't think it looks outdated, but I also don't think it looks new. New for an iPhone maybe, but not new for a phone. iPhone was new for a phone, period. Iphone 4 was new for a phone. Period. iPhone 5 was a little bigger. And the the 6 and 6 plus. But I don't think we had anything new and unique for a while now.

Not really a criticism. Rather an observation. It looks damn great. I have been saying for years I would get a galaxy S :edge to edge" device if I can get one without Samsung software. With the X I have that. The price is a bit... difficult to swallow.

Best in phone designs -

2012
HTC
Apple
Sony

2017
Samsung
Huawei
LG?

Tables have turned. Some of the worst became the best and vice-versa. Maybe after five years, Google will design a very nice Pixel. Remember the early gens of the Galaxy S and Notes were quite hideous. It's like watching The Simpsons in the Tracey Ullman Show. The last gens since 2015 all look amazing.

The only iPhone designs I ever liked was the 2G, 4/4s, and 5s/SE with black fronts. But the 4 series has the glass rears that influenced this decade to go glass. I would rather have blemishes on metal than spider web cracks. I didn't realize how non-black fronts bothered me after using a silver S7e and Pixel.

Apple could do way better but let's not blame them for everything. Google and Samsung have only been innovative for how long again? Android was a BlackBerry copycat since the beginning. Like I mentioned, try to consistently be innovative for 40+ straight years with multiple products in multiple industries.

Apple gets all the hate when we wouldn't have PC, PDA, and App Stores without them.

Apple II
Lisa
Macintosh
Newton
iMac
iTunes
iPod
iPhone
App Store
iPad
Apple Watch

Uh, what's Samsung's and Google's portfolio with multiple game changing products again? Samsung with phablet and stylus. What else? Curved 4K TV. What else? About 15 years ago, Samsung was a joke. If Sony was Honda, Samsung was Hyundai.

Best eras of Apple Computer/Inc.
1. 1997-2011
2. 1976-1985
3. 2012-Present
4. 1986-1996

But most haters only know Apple from iPod, iPhone, iPad, and more iPhone and then go ask what have you done for me lately? Can't appreciate their earlier influences in other markets. Listen, I'm no Apple apologist. I can't stand them sometimes. But appreciate their influence during the last 40+ years.

I think you’ve gotta hold one in your hands for a few minutes before passing final judgment. Those who have held one say it’s amazing in person. Apple’s attention to design detail is not conveyed well in a photo.

The little bit of bezel around the display is there on purpose. It has to be. Clearly Apple could have made an fully edge to edge or even a wrap-around display if they wanted to. Samsung has for several years, and is the supplier of the displays for the X. It’s not exclusive tech.

And it makes sense. A slight bezel helps avoid inadvertent taps while gripping, and makes edge-swipe gestures work better. Samsung’s design may look more interesting on first glance, but it’s not necessarily practical or functional.

Because iPhone X will be the same design for at least 2-3 (if not 4) years. Apple has gotten so lazy in terms of doing design innovations it takes forever while Samsung comes up with more innovative designs about every year and improve on it.

Just look how long the iPhone 6 design has been around. 4 years now and they call it 'iPhone 8'.
You'll find the notch decrease in size over time, as tech progresses.

No one said it'll be "the same design". I'd say software-wise (gestures) was being referred to at the keynote in terms of being the more long term constant.

The hardware's a stepping stone toward a pure display sans sensors/camera overlay.

(You appear to have a chip on your shoulder & almost want the X to fail...(hmm)...

iPhone X is the S version of all the other iPhones combined ; )

idk, if people thought the old ones were sweet then..
this is the one.
srry if you disagree.

All those shouting that bezel-less is no big deal must own phones of a larger form factor than the X & are either stubborn to see the benefits or threatened by change for some reason.

If you owned an iPhone 8 or smaller phone, then the design of the X is a much more efficient use of the screen. It's not an aesthetic thing primarily, it's to give the user more screen real estate. & it's modernised.

Bezels are dying. Surprised people on a tech forum won't evolve with this design progression.

Why does this even need to be stated.....😀

You obviously don’t like iOS or Apple hardware. Don’t buy it. I don’t like Android software, neither do I like a lot of Android hardware - doesn’t mean I feel the need to start a post on an Android forum to complain every time someone releases a phone.

Not true at all. Big Apple fan and love my MacBook Pro and macOS.

It's exactly what made me sad/ disappointed is that the 'X' didn't wow me as much as Samsung's Galaxy S8 did to switch back. And I was so looking forward to go all Apple again including the phone to have maximum compatibility with my MBP.

I think this will be a big trial year for the iPhone X new design. Especially with those embracing the notch. But I actually forward to next year to see what Apple offers having multiple models of the iPhone X. This will be a huge year, but I expect 2018 to bring some interesting changes as well.

As soon as someone declares that the iPhone 7 and 8 are the same design as the 6, their design opinions are disvalidated. Proves they don’t understand design.

The onus is on the designer to impart to the layman that an effort was made to change the design. Designers are not the only ones who get to dictate and define what a design change is. Spiritual nonsense like "fulfulling passions/goals" aside, designers work for the customer.

I think this is just a matter of preference. I do think the S8 looks better but the X is not outdated. The S8 only care out a few months before the X.

However for me looks are not the most important thing hence why I’m going with the X and selling my note 8.

Yeah if you say so OP. Maybe you haven't seen the Google Pixel 2 yet? if you want to talk about outdated design before release loool

Cant wait for iPhone X (Silver) to be in my hands 🙂

What are you smoking?

The S8 has a bezel top and bottom, and what is genuinely dated is the ridiculous downward curved sides on the Samsungs, what that does is put a reflection down both sides of the screen. How is replacing a bezel with a reflection a good thing.

The edge display looks stunning but is not that practical to use. Without a case it’s not that easy to hold and yes there are reflections. They don’t bother me so much when web browsing or using apps but it was a little annoying whilst watching videos.

Yep iPhone definitely has less bezel than the S8 anyone who disputes that is blind and deaf lool and just don't wanna accept the truth.

Bezel less is NOT a good design. It’s a UX nightmare. I don’t understand where this fad has started from all of a sudden.
Bezel less is GREAT design. More screen, Less body bluk.

I don't know about you, but I use my phone in my pocket, and bezel less design lets you have bigger screen in same body, or same screen in smaller body... it's bloody GREAT!

But they are not that easy to hold for example if playing a game and smash easily on impact.

If you like the curved sides then that is simply a personal decision on your part and I respect that if you like the overall look, but it is bad practical design. It's the opposite of form follows function, because the function must revolve around being able to see the screen.

When I lived in London, I'd walk past this store every day and marvel at the cleverness of the window design, the glass is concave and comes to a point, what this does is make all reflections that you normally see in flat shop fronts completely disappear.
