And having both a chin and forehead on other competitor phones look ridiculous.

You may hate the notch, but others can also appreciate the engineering involved in the X’s display.

Not to me it doesn’t. Bezels aren’t the scourge of my world. 🙄😉

The thick silver metal rim of the X just looks so yesteryear.

It looks tacky to me. I actually really dislike the X, I hope that Apple comes to its senses and removes the notch for next year.

Disclaimer: Just my personal opinion guys, don’t attack me for it. 🙄😉

These are such radical design changes. How can anyone expect to compete with such innovation?

Tbh, iPhone 8 looks like the S3 in terms of bezel size.

What's the point of this post? New phones are being released all the time with better design, features and functionality.

Ya but how many other people are standing in line or camping out for a phone without a bezel? I read a thread where they talked about their ping times to Apple servers to improve their chances of preordering the X. Fanboy heaven. Even though Apple is behind and several of their products haven’t been updated in years, I guess if it’s new for Apple it must be special.

It does have bezels. Don’t forget, the screen is curved so the bezels just aren’t as obvious when you look at the galaxy straight on... but they are there.

Boy that’s a stretch.

No. If the notch ‘looks like crap’ but Apple had to put it there for practical reasons then that’s function over form, the exact opposite of what everyone accuses Apple of all the time.

Yes, I'm basing everything on the DOZENS of reports that Apple struggled finding a way to integrate Touch ID under the screen and that they eventually abandoned it in order to not delay the release. Since you refuse to believe they were, let's flip it around: If their first choice all along was Face ID, why even bother with something that challenging (Touch ID, under the brand new OLED screen), all the way up until to months before release???? Why not start touting Face ID as the "future" from day one? Pretty obviously: because this is RETROACTIVE spin. They didn't want to use it, they simply HAD to use it. Why is that such an unbelievable thing to accept given all the leaks/reports?

And as far as the earpiece, front facing camera, and proximity sensor, those at MINIMUM would have taken up less space (so maybe a tiny "divot" on the very top of the screen) OR could have possibly been relocated to the extreme edges. They just don't take up much space, especially in comparison to the full Face ID suite of camera, dot projector, and IR illuminator, nor (with the exception of the ff camera) do they need to be precisely located like the Face ID components do. Again, it's fair to say even if they couldn't relocate any of the NON-Face ID components, the remaining real estate needed would be smaller, leading to a less obnoxious notch.

The million dollar question remains:

If you could choose Touch ID or Face ID (and everything else was equal), even if there was NO notch, why would the VAST majority of people choose Touch ID? Some of that is familiarity, sure, but it's also because Touch ID wasn't broken to begin with.

Apple (and the great "designer" Ive... who was great up until about October of 2011, then for some reason, not so much...) have sold a bunch of people on a white lie that Face ID is somehow vastly superior to Touch ID, and how it's a feature that should somehow compel you to buy the X.

They are MASTERS of spin

Your whole post made me laugh right in the morning. Thanks for starting my day with some light hearted humour.

I actually can’t believe that you mocked Jony Ive with the quoted “designer” comment. You say he was great until October 2011, but did you know he was knighted in 2012 for services to design and enterprise?! So yeah that’s Sir Ive for you.

I’m baffled by the blatant ignorance, towards technology in general, in your whole post. That level of technology and perfection doesn’t automatically just appear on a fine morning because something else didn’t work. They must’ve been working on it alongside the Touch ID technology for years.

Try creating something new yourself and bring it to the market, you’ll realise what I’m talking about.

Ps. I love it how everyone comes across as industry leading designers here, providing solutions to literally every issue without having the slightest idea of what it needs to actually get the thing developed within the type of quality Apple adheres to.

The better solution would've been to create a virtual bezel on top where the 2 cut outs are. But Apple did it most likely just to differentiate from other phones which is a stupid solution.

As I said before: All phones will eventually just be a sheet of screen/ glass, no more bezels at all. It's all about the UI/ UX and internals.

iPhone X users will find out how annoying it is to watch media in full screen mode or more so gaming where the notch is standing out like a sore.

That said the notch isn't even my biggest annoyance with the 'X'.

- It's actually the thick bezels around it and on the sides. It's as thick as the old phones.

- And the steel/ chrome frame makes it look so outdated.

- Not to forget one of the most ugly things on the 'X': The protruding camera on the back. I don't know if this has to do anything with the AR but how come Samsung was able to come up with a great camera on S8 and Note 8 that is completely flush on the back? And Apple's camera sticks out and the phone isn't even flat when you put it on a table.

I’ll be an iPhone X user and why would I watch media (videos) in full screen mode? That would mean cropping out part of the video regardless if there was a notch or not, due to the aspect ratio of the screen and the video.

Because those phones are thicker.

s8 = 8mm
s8+ = 8.1mm
Note 8 = 8.6mm
iPhone X = 7.7mm

The camera on the X protrudes more than 0.3mm

The camera on the X protrudes more than 0.3mm

Compare to their equal counterpart.

- iPhone X 7.7mm to the Note 8 8.6mm
- iPhone 8 7.3mm to the s8 8mm
- iPhone 8+ 7.5mm to the s8+ 8.1mm

Overall the difference should be roughly the difference of the camera bump (maybe not exactly, but very close)

*edit*

I will also add the Samsung’s have a bumped ridge. And I wouldn’t be surprised if the bump of the ridge is higher than the recess of the camera glass is sunk back in. Creating the illusion of a flush camera.

(s8 and s8+ have the same ridge)

The notch really isn’t a different design philosophy than the iPhone battery case Apple makes.
They are owning the fact that the phone is bezel-less but still requires front facing hardware.

That's right, it's not philosophy. It's about the technology behind the notch that makes Face ID possible with all the sensors and other included features. I understand the design is not acceptable for some, but we have to look past the design and see how technology matures and evolves over time.

The display is not on the edge because it has a bezel going all the way round and a top chin (notch).

The largest bezel on the iPhone X is smaller than the largest bezel on any other Android phone. That's the big difference here and the reason why the iPhone X has OLED folding.

explain this again. why does it have to fold?
if it didn't fold, the display driver would be on the end of the display (the bottom.. nearest the lightning port)..
this connection would have to be covered up by a larger bezel at the bottom..
if it's folded, the driver can be underneath the display allowing that part of the screen to go closer to the bottom edge.

(i think 😉 )

--------------------
edit- here's a picture that may help in understanding how it's folded:

the vertical line indicates the approximate location of the bezel on the bottom edge.. if the display didn't fold, the driver/connectors would have to fit in the space to the right of the vertical line.. there isn't enough room so the line would have to move to the left some-- creating a larger bezel.

1. Apple's trade-off allows the Status bar to be tucked into the corners of the display creating even more unobscured viewing area. Should Apple make the ears black to blend in with the camera housing? Well, the trade-off there is unsymmetrical corners and a display that looks like a tongue, and as anyone who's read Ive before knows, Apple is fanatical about crafting those rounded corners with curvature continuity rather than with tangency breaks. Having the ears "raw" allows those rounded corners to be shown off in their mathematically perfect glory. (An aside: I think the curved display on the Samsung phone serves no practical utility other than to say: "We can do this because." Really unhappy with my experience as I prefer my content not to fold and distort at the edges. Also, I prefer the bezel on the X as it "frames" the UI/content nicely."

2. Software is king. Apple has the best and most robust "digital lifestyle" software suite—going all the way back to the original iLife bundle. Having a software portfolio helps to make your phone be actually useful. But if people want to make a financial investment based on the dimensions of bezels rather than utility it is their prerogative as uninformed consumers.

Just look at which phone is prettier/ nicer design wise. The phone on the left that will be available only end of year/ January 2018 or the phone on the right that was out since March/ April 2017. To me it's the right one.

Let's put a like for like photo instead eh?

There that's a bit better.

Now remember that the whole point of a screen is what is displayed on a screen and when looking it's obvious that even if you like the design of the Galaxy, that you're getting reflections down both sides, that cannot be helped unless you use the phone in a dark room with no point lights around.

Adding to this, I would note that these are just photos you do not get to appreciate the actual stainless steel frame on the iPhone, now you may or may not like that, it's just a matter of taste. I can see how some people would like the pretence of no bezels on the side of the Galaxy, but to me while it looks very nice compared to earlier Samsung designs, it's a bit kitsch compared to the iPhone.

But you know what is wonderful about living in a capitalist democracy, you can choose whatever design you like from the dozens available, but to say that what you like is obviously the nicest, is not just nonsensical but it's puerile in the extreme.

Some people think photo realistic portraits are the 'nicest' because they are smooth and accurate, but other people prefer a portrait by Matisse. I know what I'd go for given the choice.

Yea there's no use for the sloped screen edges of the S8, it serves no purpose and causes reflections for no reason. A small thin bezel is a much better solution. Nothing to fantasize, it's a great design. Millions of people will buy it. You can spend your life on an Apple forum trying to convince people otherwise or just get a rise out of people, but it makes no difference to those that like the design.

Apple buy parts from samsung and samsung knows what is apple up to. Samsung cannot copy exactly an apple’s design but they do modify a little and call it their idea. To some who like S8 screen its because samsung copy apple’s innovations. I like s8 Screen and decided not buy X because i already got edge to edge display by samsung courtesy apple. Edges in s7 edge were bad and made phone hard to use but in s8 they are fine.

Sorry to say...in terms of designs...Samsung did it Right......its no denying it. The iphone X looks like a hideous fisher price toy with a case already built in LOL. And yes I only compare the iPhone X to the S8 since they both have 5.8 inch displays while the Note 8 is in a league of its own.

Both are beautiful because both are apple’s designs. X has some bezels which looks like X is inside a case which looks little dated but for most people it won’t be a deal breaker.
