I don't know.
I don't think you'll create more screen by cutting out part of the usable screen:)
I'd rather have a small bezel for the earpiece and all the sensors needed up there than sacrifice screen space for it and use an asymmetrical screen that wraps around the hardware on the top.

It really doesn’t though. The design of the X is closer to bezeless. A full upper bezel, as thin as it is is less screen space than the X.

Now if you want to talk about the notch getting in the way we’ll sure, but the design still gives the user more screen space.

It’s either the notch, or a skinny upper bezel like design similar to EVERYONE else...Samsung etc.

I don't think being different is a good enough reason for the notch. It causes layout problems within the device and layout consistency problems between devices, and it distracts from the content on the screen. Having the ears does add that little bit of more screen space, but the only good use for that space that I've seen so far is the status bar items. Otherwise it's either wasted white space or it forces the notch to cover up content. And if status bar items are indeed the only good use for the "ears" then I think it makes much more sense for that space to always be black.

It's fine if Apple wants the phone to look different, but it shouldn't get in the way of user experience. Of course, people will disagree as to how much it gets in the way.

I don't know.

I think what you might be talking about is pushing the notch up and extending the height of the entire phone. The sensors/speaker area has to fit somewhere. iapplelove is correct that it creates more screen space if keeping the same sized device. But I argue that that extra space adds minimal value, and creates more problems. It should be black and only house status bar items IMO.

Can we just move on from the notch please? People like it. If you don't, it's time to move on as it's not going anywhere. You can go back and forth all you want, but it is the decision they made. Take it or leave it (we already know the answer, just move along).

If people didn't voice their dislike of Apple's decisions, this entire forum site would be a barren wasteland lol.

Loosing the notch could mean loosing the front facing camera (regardless of face ID) loosing the proximity sensors and loosing the earpiece speaker.

Even if Apple developed an under screen Touch ID sensor, an under screen proximity sensor AND ditched the camera ... a bezel would still be required, for the speaker. unless we go back to side talking like the old Nokia nGuage. That speaker has to go some place.

Apple could possibly reduce the size of th top bezel but not eliminate it. A phone without speakers and microphones is not a phone.

I believe Apple attempted to make the most of that unused space as best as possible. Love it or hate it. That notch seems to serve a purpose.

Yes pretty much what you said.
Extend the height of the phone higher and start the full screen without any parts of it missing right under the ear speaker and all the needed sensors.

With all my past and present iPhones I try not use that orientation. When in landscape I try and have the speaker on the left.

It's annoying when some apps launch and assume the landscape orientation with the speaker on the right and they auto flip it.

Still no excuse for lazy. There’s two ways to hold a phone in landscape. If you buy a X you know what you’re in for. Who knows, maybe they will come up with software where the scroll bar will scroll around the notch. It’d look cool

I always like it with home button on the right just cuz I'm right handed. This won't change with the X even though there's no home button

I saw a video where when using Safari, scrolling up and down through a web page, the scroll bar that indicates where you are on the page (e.g. halfway down means 50%) actually gets obstructed by that notch when it goes through it! Is that something that happens in some "full screen mode", or is there some tweak that makes it visible when going through it (like it gets bumped outside the notch so it's now visible)?

I'd assumed it worked similar to this?

Right, let's move on from the notch to the "small screen" and when we're done we can get to manufacturing shortages, not before reviewing the beautiful price tag and the reliability of the 3d cameras, there's so much fun ahead of us. :D

Let's be brutally frank about this yea, I mean brutally frank. The iPhone X in landscape mode is going to be a piece of crap. Let's not try to kid ourselves that it's not, just because you are a fan of it (or not) or because you want to justify buying it.

This is why it will be a piece of crap.

1) It has a narrower screen than the Plus models. So if you're going from a Plus to the X, you will be watching content on a narrower screen when in landscape mode.

2) The aspect ratio will be out of joint. Apple increased overall screen size by stretching the screen, but it forgot to widen the screen in proportion to the stretch. Seriously what were they thinking? Whether you have a Plus or a non Plus, the aspect ratio you have been used to for 3 years will be different in a negative way. To say the X has a bigger screen than the Plus because of a stretch is a cop out.

3) And if the above 2 reasons aren't enough to explain why the X in landscape will be crap, I give you the notch. Well, it's Apple giving you the notch, but you know what I mean. Honestly Apple should have permanently blanked out the left and right ears of the notch and just had them as displays for wifi and battery etc and nothing else. Again, what were they thinking? I get they wanted more real estate, but ears left and right of something sitting on your screen? Most people will have accepted a forehead given that the sides and chin were almost bezeless, but the notch is just... like....there. Many have said it won't bother them, but get the X first and use it for a while before you make such an assertion.

Again, the X in landscape will be a piece of crap relative to the 2014-2016 iterations when in landscape mode. This is not hating on the X, it's a simple truth. I'm afraid Apple dropped the ball with regard to this matter.

Apparently normal size iPhone users hold their phones in landscape mode too, it’s narrower than the X is by a little bit. The X displays movies etc in 16:9 roughly the same size as the non plus phones. It’s not to replace plus phones, that version will probably be with us next year. If the user wants the movie stretched to fill the screen then they can do that, just like you can zoom in to,remove bars on movies at present (urgh, who does that).

If you look at the design docs for developers Apple are advising the the usable part of the display should be the rectangle excluding the display sections inside the radius of the corners, which makes it about the same usable area of non plus phones. It’s up to devs to include or exclude the areas at the top and bottom as they like. They just shouldn’t place controls in those areas.
[doublepost=1507622168][/doublepost]Thinking further on this, all cases for iPads and iPhones which incorporate a stand of any description, always orientate the device with the top to the left. Just because you can hold it the other way round doesn’t mean you should :p

It's the same every year. Not too worried about it over here.

Not sure why people would use it in landscape
i use the calculator in landscape as it offers additional functionality when rotated this way.

what's funny though is that i'm sure someone here will argue that landscape calculator will be better on plus screen than X..
when in reality, they'll be equal as far as i'm concerned.. i just need to use the calculator at that point.. it doesn't matter if it's 2" tall or 12" tall.

Why are people browsing in landscape mode when it's vastly inferior to portrait mode?
That's your opinion but not everyone's and certainly not mine. I prefer to use full desktop versions of web sites rather then mobile and those are best viewed in landscape mode. So in my opinion portrait mode is inferior to landscape mode for this purpose.

The fact that landscape mode is not as good on the iPhone X compared to the Plus phones is something I will have to get use to. It's a small price to pay for the added benefits the iPhone X provides over the other iPhone models.

People need to stop defending the notch
i think some people might be defending themselves..
you don't like the notch? cool.. some people do, cool.. most people likely don't care either way..cool

but start chastising others that don't think like you-- "teh notzh is effing sux !!1:mad: " ....then you're putting them in the position of defending themselves.

(just like i just did to you with writing the quote that way.. it's likely offensive to you or others that i've mocked like that.. you see?)

.

Sorry but this iPhone X is the upgrade for the normal iphone. For the iphone plus the upgrade is coming next year with that 6.4”
So how is this piece of crap this X model vs iphone 6 or iphone 7 with 4.7”?

Yes put me in the "I like the things the notch brings" column. For those who don't like it, don't buy it. Means I'll get mine sooner. ;)

But you'll have to explain why you feel this strong desire to trash it at every turn.

I am not sure why people say this. The notch is a design decision that isn't going anywhere. There isn't anything to defend, it is what it is. Some people like it, some don't. Both are fine because it's a personal preference. You saying the notch is horrible design holds as much weight as me saying it's amazing design.

Very well said.
I dont know what they were thinking cutting a chunk out of a beautiful OLED screen and messing up the phone like that.
That is complete nonsense and a terrible idea.
