The thing you have to remember is that is a picture of the home screen.

Go into safari for example. There is a bar below the notch as well which is kind of weird.

I’ve been playing with it a lot in the iOS simulator.
Interesting. I just watched 9to5Mac's hands on video from the announcement, and none of the apps they were shown using (Wallet, Camera, Photos) had an additional notch. They all either used the sides of the display flanking the notch, or treated it as the area where you would usually see the clock displayed (not saying you're lying, but just haven't found any examples myself where the screen real estate was wasted).

For the non-Plus owners it’s a dream in terms of size.

For the Plus owners, it could go either way. If it’s about the size of the screen, maybe some Plus owners will be okay with the smaller overall form factor. If it’s about the overall size of the phone, then most Plus owners will pass.

As a Plus owner, it will be nice to finally see it in person so I can see for myself.

Back up the fact that the Plus has a wider screen? It's a physical fact. The measurements can be looked up anywhere, even on Apple's own site. The X has an aspect ratio of 18.5:9 while the Plus sized iPhones are 16:9. Obviously the height has increased more than the width.

Whether or not that's a good thing or a bad thing is entirely subjective. All I'm saying is that some people prefer a wider screen to a taller one.

There are two reasons why the 5.8-inch measurement is deceptive.

First, one of the criticisms of the iPhone X is the fact that there is a notch taken out of the top of the screen. If we were being really pedantic, we’d re-measure the screen of the iPhone X from the base of that notch, because while there is some screen visible on either side of the notch, it’s not really going to be usable. We don't have the exact measurements of the notch, but we think it would probably reduce the diagonal measurement from 5.7-inch to something closer to the iPhone Plus’ 5.5-inch. When we get our hands on one we’ll let you know.

Second, when used in portrait orientation, the width of the display on iPhone X matches the width of the 4.7in display of the iPhone 8. So it’s taller, but not wider. In other words, the iPhone X has a different aspect ratio to the iPhone 8. The iPhone X aspect ratio is something like 19:9 where the iPhone 8 is 16:9. It's a longer screen, but that's all.

Developers have even gone as far as to suggest that because of the iPhone X’s swipe gesture indicator, the display actually has less vertical space than the display on the iPhone 8 when used in landscape mode.

So...you want bezels? You aren't losing anything as far as screen size is concerned, so it must be the bezels you'll be missing.

For the love of....

Look. The.phone.is.smaller.

Period. It doesn't matter whether that's due to a lack of bezels or the price of tea in China. It's a smaller phone. Screen? Longer (and thinner; I saw you debating that above also--it's thinner WITHOUT including the bezels in the measurement of the plus), yes. There's more screen and I dig that. However, it's a smaller phone, and it really is ok for you to concede that point.

Do people not research this stuff before ordering? The screen size and phone size has been known for months. There are some real winners here.

And losers.

/sarcasm

There has been a ton of discussion, analysis, and videos about this. The display of the X is taller than the Plus, but not much wider than the non-Plus. So depending on your preferred aspect ratio and the content that you view, the display may feel smaller in some ways.

Basically, compared to a Plus, the screen of the X is tall but narrow, whereas the Plus is a bit shorter but wider.
The iPhone X is like the Note 8, for those familiar.

hopefully, until i hold it...going to be hard to tell. it does look like the X also has a narrow bezel

It looks that way because it does. LOL. Screen is definitely more narrow than the Plus. Something else that I'm uncertain about why there's debate.

By how much? Give us the actual dimensions without including bezels...including those alongside the screen on a 7 or 8 Plus. That's your claim. Back it up.

Does it matter how much? Is the fact that it DOES not enough truth?

I don't understand why anyone needs a phone that's bigger than 6-inches.

Agreed, it a phone! Buy an iPad if you want a big screen

Once upon a time people said the same about a 3.5" phone. Then 4" was the ideal size, and we know how it's gone since then. The bottom line is, the larger the display the more you can do on the device comfortably. So people will take all the screen size they can get as long as it still fits in their hand and pocket.

The X is only smaller because of the lack of bezels. Why is that an issue? What exactly are those bezels providing you? The useable space of the phone will remain the same. I am beginning to wonder if you are concerned that you'll be judged unfairly by those around you who feel you might not have a big one. If it's that big of an issue, just go buy the largest defender style case you can find and really bulk it up.

Good grief.

Just picked up my new case from Best Buy in preparation of my iPhone X coming Nov 3rd, and although I saw the picture comparisons, now that I'm holding my iPhone X case next to my iPhone 6s Plus, the iPhone X is small and a little disappointing. I guess I’m wanting an iPhone X Plus with a 6.5 or 7’ screen. This is bothering more than the notch!
I have my case to, I think the experience will be much different even though it’s smaller, it a full screen. That’s my hope.

Honestly in my world IPhone X will answer everything I’ve been wanting from an iPhone. I remember getting the 6+ and trying to convince myself I was content. I wasn’t. 10 days later I returned it for a regular 6 and felt good. Then I got the 7...never even thought about getting the 7+. I have small fingers so the 6/7 size has always been the best for me. I did want a bigger screen size but in a smaller compact overall size. I barely use my iPhone in landscape mode. I know I will enjoy my iPhone X and bigger screen. Having no bezels it’s a plus to me. I can’t wait to get it. I feel I will ultimately be fully content with IPhone X. Plus getting the cool new features and what not. Patiently waiting for November 3...

  • iPhone X display = 2.46" wide
  • iPhone Plus display = 2.69" wide

Take the horizontal resolution and divide by the PPI. Anyone with elementary math skills can calculate the display width.

The iPhone X display also has a smaller area compared to Plus. This is a mathematical fact.

Exactly this.

... and people wonder how it was so easy to decide about 4 seconds after the keynote that after 3 years of 6 Plus phones I wanted the 8 Plus over the X... WITH NO INTEREST IN THE X.

SIZE IS EVERYTHING.

I'll definitely consider the X Plus next year. :)

Absolutely! Long live the Plus!

Same here :)

How is it that X people get at us 8/8 Plus owners over bezels, but they can ignore that so-called notch? I keep looking at it like that left behind residue from a price sticker that will bug you forever because it’s messing up an otherwise pristine new item.

Just enjoy your screen and we will enjoy ours... geesh!

So you're just discovering something I posted about a month ago, and the main reason I didn't preorder a X: Yes, it is a smaller screen for Plus owners despite the larger diagonal measurement.

Only if you include bezels in your measurements. This is so ridiculous.
[doublepost=1509239616][/doublepost]
...why? Your screen...you know...that bit you actually use...will be the same size.

I think you completely misunderstand the size difference. You think the X is the same width as the plus models? its not.
Its going to be just as narrow as the regular 6/7/8. Its taller, due to bezels being gone, but you will still have all the limitations of the 6/7/8, that is, the increased word wrapping, lack of tabs in safari landscape mode.

The below picture illustrates this, its not my pic, but its from xcode simulator, so you can see the difference in the amount of word wrapping you will experience between the X and the plus screen, due to the narrower width.

I mean, practically the same amount of information is being displayed (the X has less text at the bottom, but that's because it has more text at the top from a caption, if it was scrolled down you would see the same amount of text in this article as on the Plus). It's just a different aspect ratio. I know it won't always be the case, but from this example, it seems we're not losing any screen real estate going from the Plus to the X.
