I mean, practically the same amount of information is being displayed (the X has less text at the bottom, but that's because it has more text at the top from a caption, if it was scrolled down you would see the same amount of text in this article as on the Plus). It's just a different aspect ratio. I know it won't always be the case, but from this example, it seems we're not losing any screen real estate going from the Plus to the X.
You aren't. Its just narrower and talle,r which may seem like one is to some iPhone plus adjusted users.

The X has slightly more screen real estate if you do the math. Its just that it’s in a smaller package. Apple probably should’ve went big. I feel like they played it just a tad bit too safe and they should’ve trusted themselves more. Give us a 6.4” phone and a 5.8” phone. Quit playing.

This doesn't look lined up, but it is. Now a part of me is thinking I will like how it will fit in my pocket easier, but then the more I think about it, I'm a guy, my old phone fits just fine, I want bigger. Bigger is better, that is what my brain is telling me, but when I opened my case and put it on my phone I was like, meh.....

Pretty sure a mophie case with extra battery will be bigger, get some bezel back at top and bottom. So if you want big brick wait till that comes out. In a week of use you will get used to smaller physical size. Lay your case or glass protector over screen of your Plus and see that it covers the screen, just not the bezels.

Common misconception. Actually the X has a smaller display area after you take the notch into account.

ahhh barely...yeah if you take out the top row on the 8plus it’s not. It too has dead space at the top.

Yo...I TOTALLY just made a similar thread! They'll likely get merged. My shock came from receiving my tempered glass. I opened the package and was in SUPER shock. I know we get more screen but it's so skinny and small. Sheesh!

It won’t seem so small when nearly the whole front of the device lights up.

If you want to include the status bar area, the iPhone X is even at a bigger disadvantage in terms of usable display area.

The iPhone 8 Plus status bar is 20 points tall. The X status bar is 40 points tall. This is to acccomodate the notch.

Except the status bar on the X is placed in an area that would otherwise just be a black forehead bezel. So it’s actually moved off the “normal” screen area.

Either way you spin it, the X has a smaller physical display and usable area compared to Plus.

So? It’s a smaller device. Apple doesn’t claim it to be bigger than a Plus phone.

Why people keep comparing it to a Plus is baffling. The proper comparison would be to a 6/7/8.

My original reply was to a poster who claimed the X had more real estate than the Plus. Take a moment to follow the replies before contributing.

It’s not that baffling if you realize Apple is marketing the X as the “future of the smartphone.” They didn’t call it the future of the 4.7” smartphone.

Interesting. I just watched 9to5Mac's hands on video from the announcement, and none of the apps they were shown using (Wallet, Camera, Photos) had an additional notch. They all either used the sides of the display flanking the notch, or treated it as the area where you would usually see the clock displayed (not saying you're lying, but just haven't found any examples myself where the screen real estate was wasted).

Below is what i mean. Some apps just show the clock and signal in the corners.

In safari you still get the site link and a bit of wasted space. Would be nice if that went away when you scrolled.

hopefully, until i hold it...going to be hard to tell. it does look like the X also has a narrow bezel

Damn! You’re correct! It’s not true edge to edge!! I expect more of an infinity pool effect! If the display doesn’t have that pop, wow factor...it’s going back!!

But the other person had a valid point.

Yes, the Plus has more screen estate when you account for the “notch” and corners of the X. But only by a very small amount (people in other threads have done the math on this)

If you then account for the status bar on a Plus, then things actually start to even out as far as actual real estate. They’re just different aspect ratios.

“The future of iPhone” being that FaceID and the near edge to edge design is the future of how an iPhone will look moving forward. Not “the Plus is going away and this will be the only size available forever.” No doubt Apple will release a Plus version next year when OLED panels aren’t quite as constrained. Apple could only order 90 million for the X as is.

The X is sized more to a 6/7/8 (slightly bigger because of the ratio change.) Its not meant to compare to a Plus. They haven’t released their 6.4” yet (which is already rumoured for 2018.)

I can't wait. I'm so sick of the + sized phones. Unfortunately, you have to buy the + to get all the features. The iPhone X sounds like it'll be perfect for me. Plus, that display is supposed to be orgasmic.

I agree. Finally get an iPhone with the better features. All the bells and whistles and not have to carry a plus size iPhone with the bezels. This is why the X for me will be a win win situation.

I can guarantee that most plus owners who use the X for a week or two will get used to the different aspect ratio. It sounds like it is going to be a minimal decrease in useable space. It’s not like we are going for 5.5 to 4”.

It’s going to be slightly thinner but a bit taller. Some might decide it doesn’t work for them, others will. That’s why they have return policies.

Lol. Reading this on my 7+ thinking ...There’s a 14 day return policy!! Ahem!!

I’m reading all this on my iPad thinking.. who cares :).
I’ll enjoy carrying a smaller phone, using a sharp new phone that I will like looking at. The notch? Doesn’t bother me at all, I doubt I’ll even think about it after a day or two.

The notch doesn’t bother me, I thought the sides and bottom were ‘screen’... but it appears there’s still a thin bezel.

I know, first world problems. I won’t lose sleep over it.

Back up the fact that the Plus has a wider screen? It's a physical fact. The measurements can be looked up anywhere, even on Apple's own site. The X has an aspect ratio of 18.5:9 while the Plus sized iPhones are 16:9. Obviously the height has increased more than the width.

Whether or not that's a good thing or a bad thing is entirely subjective. All I'm saying is that some people prefer a wider screen to a taller one.
I'll add some supporting images:
