Is this the design so then they can improve on it and remove adjust or fix the awkwardness of the notch for iphone XI? It seems odd for the notch to stick into the display, and I don't want to sign in with my face since touch Id works just fine.

Honestly, I would have preferred if they either put black around the notch with the icons in white or colored, they could even put the black bar at the bottom so that it was uniform on both sides. It could be labeled the HOME SPACE or something so that it has a purpose.

I mean, the notch is "fine" but it just seems very un-Apple-like in terms of design. Still a beautiful phone for the 10th Anniversary Edition.

"Make a bezelless phone! Smaller bezels the better!"

"Why didn't you make thicker bezels to hide the necessary cameras and sensors? Nobody asked for bezels that small."
Even without the notch, it’s still technically not a bezel-less phone. And with the notch it’s definitely not a bezel-less phone.

I don’t understand why Apple couldn’t just make a reduced bezel design. The bezels have been so large for years that I would have been happy with a design that had even half the bezel as before.

All this talk of "notch" is just super viral marketing by Notch while he works on the next big thing after MineCraft!

Purely a marketing tatctic. If they hid the sensors within a small bezel, the phone would look just like an S8, G6 etc. they want this phone to stand out. When you see that notch you’ll know exactly what phone it is.
This appears to be the only poster who gets it. The notch has nothing to do with good or bad design and everything to do with the phone being easily recognized by others in public.

Yawn, fanbois notchgate failz, notches are fire.

No prob. They probably will remove the notches with a software update.

Haters hatin'.

How is it controversial? Why would they cut the notch out and not utilize it? They would be morons to do that.

I see all this BS marketing by other companies about "bezel-less" edge to edge phones and Apple comes out and actually does it. This is the first phone with as little bezels as possible. Every other phone has wasted space. The only bezels on the iPhone X are absolutely necessary as it's not possible to put cameras through a display.

Seems like it doesn't help the case with that notch. Other phones have more screen space while the iPhone is truly wasting space so you are wrong. Look at the screen to body ratio of the other devices and they still have full use of their screens without a notch in the way of videos and photos.

For all the defenders of the Notch, slap a piece of black electric tape on the side of your iPad, iPhone, TV, computer screen, then come back here & tell us how it looks. How many people would buy a high end TV with a big black notch stuck at the top? Hmmm?

View attachment 717777 I don't like the notch, but as I saw pointed out somewhere else if they hid the top and added a tiny bezel to match at the bottom they'd have an LG V30. However IMHO the V30 does look better because it's symmetrical. Being symmetrical used to be a big thing for Apple even with things like ports, etc.

Keep the physical screen as it is. But reserve the notch and the bottom bit for system UI element that always have a black background. They can still have a less rounded cornered 'safe area' to make themselves unique. Like the mock by Mr Klaver. Solved!

What a UX nightmare. Jesus.
Not really. Video games that use TVs have used NTSC safe areas for decades. Technically HDTV has a safe area as well on TVs versus computer monitors.

This is still the basic battle of "Touch" controls versus "pointing devices" and the "war on stylus". You don't have to cram a bunch of UI at the edges for easy mousing anymore. Controls should float toward the usable area, and we have wicked fast processors to move easily between screen modes in your apps. Apple is going for apps being "bigger than your iPhone", the screen is just a look into the app, it's not the limit of what an app can do. I agree, it's new constraints on developers. But constraints are how we move forward.. it just takes time to learn the new form.

The X design is amazing, only paid shills and haters don't like it. But let's see...

- iPad is lame, has less storage than a Nomad - CmdrTaco famous last words.
- iPhone is garbage, it will have no market share - I believe Steve Balmer said that one.
- iPad reminds me of feminine hygiene products - haters before iPad launch.
- Air Pods are trash, they will fall out of your ears and get lost - how's that going for you haters, looks like Air Pods selling like hotcakes.

Now "9/14/2017 - iPhone X design is garbage" - haters. Own it haters, carve that in a stone tablet, own it and come back next year and let the world realize that you are nothing but hater a$$ haters.

Paid shills lol

If Samsung pulled this crap you'd be ripping them a new one.

This should be called out for what it is - garbage!

It could be worse they could have curved the sides like in the Samsung S8 that way you always have a constant glare along the side of the phone thus distracting you and ruining the contrast.

I'd be more interested to see those numbers reflect only the flat part of the display.

I don't think it's just about that. It's also about making honest design. Obviously the goal would be a full screen display, but the engineering reality is that there currently needs to be a dedicated area for the sensors. Instead of hiding this requirement and faking symmetry in software or by adding additional bezels, Apple simply let the notch be true to itself and filled the remaining space with display. I'm reminded of the battery case. It's also being honest about carrying a battery on its back:

I wonder if part of the reason for the "embrace the notch" attitude is to prevent burn-in. If you almost always had a black background on the sides of the notch, it would probably eventually cause noticeable burn-in.

I remember a lot of people on these forums criticizing Samsung and LG for rounded screen corners on their latest phones, but it seems Apple one-upped them by throwing a notch into the mix. I actually think the rounded corners are fine, but that notch on the other hand...

If it was a good idea on a display you'd think we would have had monitors and TV's with a notch at the top for years.

Rounded corners are fine but rounded edges like on the S8 is terrible since you always have a constant glare along the side of the phone thus distracting you and ruining the screen contrast. At work I always see the overhead lights reflecting off the edges of peoples S8. That is a total fail.

I already have embraced the notch. View attachment 717783

I think would look better if they put the Bluetooth icon on the left, right hand side of the clock. Location arrow can go left of the clock.

Who and how did these number come out about? With that much black bar space top and bottom for the Samsung. Along with a lot of space reserved for their home bar, I just don't see it.

The left right curved screen portion is not really useable anyways either...

Sorry, but those Mickey Mouse Ears are a major failure in UI design.
At least they make it obvious where you can swipe to bring up either Notification Center or Control Center.

Which also explains why the ear on the right has to be so crowded, as it wouldn't be logical to move any of the icons over to the left.
