What does the notch bring to the table? The time and other symbols could have been moved below and made it straight across with no loss in useable screen. Plenty of space above the mail icon and the camera icon to put the time and stuff.

Yes - I think it looks MUCH better with a solid band across the top. Unfortunately, that's what all the Android phones currently look like, so Apple might even be sued for cloning them that closely.

I still hate the camera bump and think the latest bump on + and the X are even worse than before. I would happily pay an extra $500 for the phone if it didn't have the bump.

Agreed. Controversial? Oh please, get a life, people. If they had it black all the way across people would complain that they should have had screen content there for status icons.

The camera bump is still an absolute design disgrace - but (1) people have dealt with it via third party cases that just make their phones thicker like Apple could have done, and (2), Apple is now doing things that are even worse like this UI guideline, so of course people have to adjust their priorities. That doesn't make it right. Next time you're watching a movie, why don't you hold your thumb over the left side of the image and see if that's a $1,000 view to you.

But yes - I agree with you in that I'm sure, in time, Apple will do something even worse than blocking part of the active screen, and we'll all look back and say, "remember when we thought blocking part of the screen was such a bad thing?..."

I'm just very grateful that Apple is now allowing people to buy their older and better models.

EDIT: I just saw that in Apple's own software, you have an option to view videos without having the notch cut out of them. THANK GOD. Now, will Apple reject Apps that give a similar option? Honestly, if they don't force you to cut a notch out of something you need to see, it's not a problem.

if it looked more like this but done properly (sorry im not an artist, its just to give you an idea) it would look better even with a notch

Who and how did these number come out about? With that much black bar space top and bottom for the Samsung. Along with a lot of space reserved for their home bar, I just don't see it.

The left right curved screen portion is not really useable anyways either...

You have semi thick bezels on the left and right sides of ya phones and the added notch..and the top and bottom...that's how those numbers came up.

Oh yay! It's that time again where everyone complains about the new iPhone and then somehow it ends up listed in their Apple products signature line not too long after release. It's one of my favorite times of the year. Carry on folks.

I'm gonna say that I agree with Apple on this one. I've gotta say, seeing the real deal now, to me the phone is way more striking when you see the content go edge to edge, and actually see the corner radius along the entire perimeter of the phone. When I see mock ups try to hide the notch, the effect is far less striking to me. There is something actually impressive about seeing such defined curves following the perimeter. When you hide the notch, you lose that effect entirely.

You would expect this crap from other company, not a company like Ape which is aesthetically obsessed with their products. It is what have taken them to where they are. The S8 or Mi Mixes? Have way better front design. The Essential's is also ugly, although theirs is smaller and less intrusive due to only having the camera.

I typically assume that the most emphatic apologists are shareholders, especially the type that would apologize for Apple pushing part of a photo up into the ears of the screen instead of making the ears black / full time notification trays.

The X design is amazing, only paid shills and haters don't like it. But let's see...

- iPad is lame, has less storage than a Nomad - CmdrTaco famous last words.
- iPhone is garbage, it will have no market share - I believe Steve Balmer said that one.
- iPad reminds me of feminine hygiene products - haters before iPad launch.
- Air Pods are trash, they will fall out of your ears and get lost - how's that going for you haters, looks like Air Pods selling like hotcakes.

Now "9/14/2017 - iPhone X design is garbage" - haters. Own it haters, carve that in a stone tablet, own it and come back next year and let the world realize that you are nothing but hater a$$ haters.

In seriousness, I think this wont be such an issue when you have apps that use colour in the notches. All the white makes it look stark. Example from CARROT.

I think in portrait mode it looks alright. In landscape though the UI just instantly fails. Looks crap and not thought through

Well, another thing that has taken them to where they are, for better or worse, is stubborn pride. They just won't do it like others do it... and then a few years down the line, they quietly cave in.

Two mouse buttons... windows that can be resized from any corner or edge, not just the bottom right... Intel processors... stylus... phablet form factor... these are just a few of the things they fought valiantly by spontaneously projectile vomiting at the mere suggestion. Then they ended up conforming anyway. Sometimes by way of non-conformist conformism ("yeah well we still have one mouse button, it's just that you can click it in two places, so nyah-nyah"). Sometimes by doing their own take in a good way (the Apple pencil IS infinitely better than a plain stylus). And sometimes by implying that it's an industry first, and magically everyone believes it except some geeks in a corner going "hey! that's been around for ages!"

So at this point they cannot, they just cannot do it the Samsung way. They need that as a cause for spontaneous projectile vomiting. Give it a year or two and the whole notch area will be black, and everyone will like it and feel that it's always been like that, in an "Oceania has always been at war with Eastasia" sort of way.

I have this feeling there were two phones in development, one with touch ID under the screen, and this model, and they couldn't get the under the screen tech ready in time and this is what came out.

I think it will be abandoned by this time next year.

I am so angry since I watched keynote.

Not sure how having a piece of games and videos missing is "cool", but okay.

The new screen is much taller (or wider in landscape) than before. Also, if Apple did hide these cameras in a standard full width bezel, you wouldn’t see that screen space (those ‘ears’) at all. So it is a screen space gain, not a loss.

For photos and videos a user can tap so the content fits the screen and nothing will be hidden behind the edges.

In other words, don't make the X look more like a regular iPhone by obscuring the notch. Silly.
