I'm going to get an iPhone x but I suspect the delays and supply will be so bad at launch pretty much no one will have one until next year. Such a shame, I feel like a company with 250billion in the bank shouldn't have these issues. Considering apple sets the release date it's disappointing to say the least.

I very much doubt this was avoidable considering the effort it takes to design a new phone. They might have done themselves a favor by announcing in October though.

Honestly, screw this. Ten years of Apple phones, and now I am finally ready to look elsewhere. More attractive hardware at a much more reasonable price available right now in every carrier store across the country without all of the 'there may be one left in the back...' silliness kind of does it for me.

good, one more chance for me to pre order early. bye

I'm skeptical of this report. If Apple wasn't sure it would have ample supply at least so the first 30 minutes of pre-orders could get release day, why not just say "Fall 2017?" Hard dates indicate some confidence that they can at least get more than 5 of these out the door on 11/3.

The first 30 minutes!?

iPhones (excluding the 8 and 8 Plus) usually sell out within a minute or two!

Well.....i imagine 10.000 iphones per country when pre-orders start give or take. Pre-orders going to the month-2months+ within a minute when the pre-orders are up.

Apple saw what worked with Nintendo's NES Classic and Switch. I'm sure they are taking a page form them. Set a limit on what they want to sell and then artificially create a shortage on the device so it can sell like hot cakes.

Apple needs no extra hype. This will only hurt sales and profit. They're not doing this intentionally. This is just bad luck and planning and being too aggressive in what they thought they could achieve.

They haven't even STARTED production yet?! This can't be real, I thought they typically started production like months in advance?!
They probably announced it because of all the leaks this summer. But the device wasn’t ready. We heard it was going into production in September but could only produce 10,000 a day. Seems they’re having even further issues preventing mass production. Also with the NAND shortages and screen supplies from Samsung being shorted makes perfect sense that it’s not ready.

this gonna be a long thread

The 8/8+ was a pointless release.

Not really useless but keeping the whole legacy range reeks of easing the high price of the X: "something for everyone" yeah, so long as you are happy buying a three year old spec/design. Great way to sellthrough your old inventory stockpile too. "We are now so environmentally friendly we recycle old ideas".

I usually look forward to new phone releases. I come off contract and would have upgraded. In a month or two I will just be saving money using my old phone on a cheaper SIM only plan. The telcos hate that: customers churn to better deals when not locked in.

This year has been all sizzle, no steak. The excitement has been the iOS upgrade which did improve things and is already available and FREE. Hats off to the software guys this year while the hardware guys get the "Maps debacle" cap to wear. Looks like a 12 month cycle is too much of a rush.

In hindsight, perhaps Apple would have been smarter to just release the 8/8s and not announce the X until it was ready. You can feel the tech journos circling to call this a failure. And bad press can lead to bad sales. The X will sell out. It will be well received by the few who get them. It will be a status symbol. But the taint of the delay will linger.

Apple has learnt nothing from their AirPods: couldn't buy them in shops for months. It gets to a point you wonder "buy now or wait for the next improved version". It will definitely be like that for the X. By the time you can actually walk in and buy one, the new model wont be far off.

Can only wonder what the smart speaker availability is going to be like...

I'm no hater, but this suits me personally. There's literally no reason to upgrade from a 7plus to an 8plus and seeing as the X won't be freely available for months I'm more than content with a Jet Black 256GB 7plus until the next cycle. The jet black is still PRISTINE after several months without a case and it's arguably better looking than the 8. Best looking current iPhone in my opinion. Free upgrade to the 9plus in 12 months and so all is well with the world.
