So they're confirming what we've already known for weeks & months.

iPhone X was going to be slow to produce.

So the effect of these reports will be to cause a pre-order panic. No server system will be able to prevent a jam up, which is going to make the majority of people angry.

The hype machine is going to be massive.

This phone shouldn't have even been announced. The 8 should have been released at the same time as this one. They should have both been delayed until they were ready. This was a very bad call from someone.

Just thinking how much would be the demand of iPhone X India.
It is listed at 89,000 INR (64 GB) and 102,000 INR (256 GB).

Oh god. Looks like I'll be ordering mine at 3:01:01

Otherwise it'd be 2018 before you can get your phone.

I'm thinking it should be more like 3:01:00:01 in order to get it anywhere close to launch date lol.

I still have my trusty iPhone 6, so if its pushed out for a few months, whatever. But that doesn't mean I don't hope to get it on launch day!

The people saying Apple is deliberately constraining supply to create a shortage are just plain crazy. The pent up demand for the X clearly shows people are willing to pay the high prices. And we know people are holding off buying the 8 so they can buy the X. So, every iPhone X Apple fails to make is just money they are leaving on the table. No sane company would deliberately underproduce a product when this high amount of demand has clearly been demonstrated.
Maybe that's true but it could also mean that people are not impressed with the iphone 8, yet they also don't want to throw 1000€+ for a phone. Time will tell... if they even get to start selling the iphone x of course.

Apple is allegedly waiting to see how many iPhone X pre-orders it receives, and monitoring how well the already-released iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus sell, before fully ramping up production overseas.

There is no evidence to support this narrative.

Could easily launch at 3:00:00 at Ships: 6-8 weeks... and not be available in the color/capacity we're looking for. They've played that game before, especially on first-generation devices.

I have never had that happen at preorder. Every iPhone I ever preordered, I got at launch.

With these delays, the iPhone X basically is the 2018 release!

If it wasn't cannibalizing the iPhone 8 so much, I would say that was exactly their intention. They are going to control the news cycle (so to speak) for much longer than a typical release.

No problem - Apple can always claim they are selling every one of them they are making. That will create a vague excitement in fan base, articles about how Apple cannot keep up with demand on PR blogs and next year will change everything again.

Seriously though if lot of people find iPhone 8/+ meh and cannot get their hands on the X - they will all just buy the 8/8+ and then buy the X once it is available greatly increasing sales - that's if the past is any indication. If things have changed in the smartphone market though, Apple will end up losing 8/8+ sales significantly until the X is more available. Let's see how the gamble of the Osborne effect works out this year.

Realistically speaking, Apple has a ballpark number of potential upgraders. They have all the data on how often people move up on the two-year cycle + extras.

They can just take the people buying the 8 and subtract them from that number.

Apple's base is so huge that they really can just do a straight-line extrapolation.

Apple, along with other companies like AT&T, will let you upgrade yearly now. Just trade in your current phone and get the latest model.

Agree totally. Love my new 8 Plus.
Me, too. I'm happy with the 8+. The X launch will be interesting to watch from the sidelines. If the production vs. demand estimates are correct, the X could be like the AirPods with a 6-week wait well into next year.

As usual, random commenters in threads thinking the heads at Apple are stupid because they can’t make complicated iPhones faster. As if the commenters who probably work fast food could do a better job.

Just another day on macrumors

After 10 years of releases and billions of dollars later, they still can't plan production to meet demand or start production in time for a launch. I like Apple products just as much as the other person on this site, but this release is such a mess and I don't even want to be bothered with this half-*** product release.

“Apple is allegedly waiting to see how many iPhone X pre-orders it receives, and monitoring how well the already-released iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus sell, before fully ramping up production overseas.”

Are they serious? Pre-orders are going to be insane. They already know this.

There are probably going to be a lot of customers who passed on the iPhone 8 and are disappointed they have to wait until after the new year to get their hands on an iPhone X
TBH... I am happy with the delay.
Still trying to defend / convince / myself the huge cost of the 256 GB model. I could help myself by having to wait till 2018, and the next iPhone will be in 2020...
Hmm...

"Apple is allegedly waiting to see how many iPhone X pre-orders it receives..."

This doesn't make much sense, Apple won't know preorders until five days before release, it can ramp up production that quickly?

How is the supply chain guy not able to do better than this?

Because he can’t change the laws of physics? Producing brand new components doesn’t just happen with the wave of a magical wand. You can have tons of todays standard technology, or a much smaller amount of cutting edge technology. No supply chain expertise can change that. Engineering is hard.

Haha. You don't say!!!! This has been common now for years. We should all expect this.
