Apologies if this was already discussed but those that restore from iCloud backup - doesn't iCloud only has 5gb? How are you able to back the phone and restore? Do you have the additional iCloud storage you pay for?

Yup. You buy additional storage according to your needs.

As a tip, if you don't actually just iCloud storage religiously but would like to in this case just for the transfer between phones (and need more than 5GB of storage), then upgrade to the suitable capacity and then downgrade back again to the free 5GB limit the following month.
That way you're only paying one month's fee and you get what you want.

I have rarely encountered an issue from a back up. I always encrypt my back ups and restore from that because if I need to restore or set up a new phone, I want everything just as it was and all my passwords, health data, etc., to be there. I hate having to input passwords again. I can't remember them.

That’s the way it should be. Who has all the time to install all apps and password etc etc.. It’s also good way to test how much or extra you can do more with the same media compare to old one.

If you have computer install iTunes, connect your iphone to computer, open iTunes then make a backup of your iphone within iTunes. Make sure you have enough space on your computer because ITunes will copy everything from your iphone and save it on your computer. Backup is easy process within itunes, if it sounds difficult watch YouTube videos. Once backup is done then connect your new iphone to same computer open iTunes then once you see option “RESTORE FROM PREVIOUS BACKUP” select the one you made, iTunes will do the rest.

I pay for additional storage, but I didn’t do that before iCloud photos. Still, I’ve never had an issue making backups even with 5GB. I used to backup a 128GB phone and 128GB iPad. The trick is to tweak the backups. Back in the day, I never backed up music, photos or movies. If I replaced a device, I synced that back from my Mac. I never backed up Facebook. Just download the app and sign back in. There are tons of apps that fall into this category. Go through the backups app by app turning off what you don’t need. That always did the trick for me.

To get to those settings, go to Settings -> Accounts & Passwords -> iCloud -> Storage -> Manage Storage -> Backup -> then click on your device. Wait for it to load, then Show All Apps. Go through and turn off things that don’t need to be backed up. It always worked for me.

Thanks for the detailed reply!

Always have used backups since upgrading my 1st gen iPhone to my 3GS ,but I’ve noticed issues of my used/available storage not matching up between my phone and computer, so with my 7plus I set up as new and with my ocd super power transferred everything 1 by 1 from my 6plus over ,airdrop very helpful in this manner,so I’m undecided with my X what route I will take, prolly set up as new to ensure no ghost data is carried over ,that ***** real ,believe it or not

just did a fresh restore and set up as new to ios 11.1 got everything sync but somethings u loose like my medical id got deleted and all data but that’s normal i knew that also iMessage

I have the iPhone 7 Plus and I have beta back ups from it. Is there anyway to restore to my iPhone X arriving today WITHOUT setting up the X as a beta testing device? Or do I have to do set up as new phone? Thanks in advance. Happy Launch Day!

Have the same problem, can anybody help? cheers!

Is it possible to restore from a backup of a phone running iOS 10? I can't upgrade my 6 Plus to iOS 11 due to insufficient space...

I set up my iPhone from an iCloud backup. Aside from the fact that my apps wouldn’t download due to all the traffic on the WiFi at the Apple store, it’s workinng great.

I am thinking of setting up as new. My current 6plus won't connect to the cloud for whatever reason that no one seems to know why or how to fix it! So I think setting up new will be the best thing, plus since I can't get in cloud on my phone I can't back it up. UGH

Anyone see if iOS 11.2 sends iMessages to cloud yet?
[doublepost=1512325727][/doublepost]To answer my own question....it's not there :-/

Didn't read whole thread, but restore from encrypted iTunes backup from my iMac. Too much health data etc. lately and too many apps to install myself. Have never had any issues from backup install, and if the new phone were to act weird I can always reset and setup as new.
