I got my iPhone 8 Plus A1864 Qualcomm model for $799 Plus $300 gift card Sams club. Which is like cash to us since we do grocery shopping there.

So really cost me $500 Plus $56 tax. Activation fee waived.

$556 for iPhone 8 Plus 64gb vs no discount for $1000 Plus $70 taxes for iPhone X.

Basically a $500 price difference.

So the iPhone 8 Plus was a better buy for me

Easy decision. Plus i paid off the installment already and eligible for another att promo next week. That’s how u I pay the att next game.

Wow nice deal. That's definitely a no brainer purchase.

I didn’t preorder the phone, and I easily just picked one up from an Apple Store New York, I don’t think there are any shortages
The supply for pickup at the grand central store sold out in 5 minutes today. They go live at 6am.

I reserved one at Apple fifth avenue and there was a line around the block.

Not sure which store you went to but it doesn’t sound like it was one of the popular ones.

US prices don't include tax/vat/whatever you want to call it. If you exclude the tax from the price in other countries, you'll see that you end up with roughly the same price as in the US.
No. No you don't.

Furthermore... after the 13% sales tax here in Canada, that 256GB model is $1750 CAD... Admittedly, a few years ago a canadian buck would get you $1.10 USD, but that has subsequently gone down to roughly $.80 USD today. That's $1,400 USD after taxes.

Price outside of the US is criminal. Bump up the US prices another 30%, and I'm sure the wait times will decrease state side just as easily.

1. European prices always include taxes. These range from about 8% to 25%
2. Apple has learnt to leave some margin for foreign exchange movements vs USD
3. EU countries require consumer electronics come with 2 years warranty, ever since that apple has added about 5-10% on to prices.

The screenshot in the article clearly shows British Pound. The rate is 1.32 (Pound to USD), which gives us $1320 for the base model. I paid for the same model $1087 after tax in the US, so it's a $233 difference. I would not call it "roughly the same", it's a big difference. The 256GB model is $1516 doing the same math. That's insane. Frankly speaking.
As I said in my original post, the uk price includes tax. Tax rates vary from country to country and even state to state here in the US. As far as I know. tax in the uk is 20%. So the price excluding tax is 800 pounds. That is roughly $1050 which I would argue is "roughly the same" cost as in the US.

Looking at the exchange rate today, 1 CAD is 0.785 USD. so 1319 CAD = 1035 USD. Roughly the same. I'm not arguing it's more expensive abroad after taxes, because many times it is. I'm just saying before taxes it is indeed roughly the same price.

...or there are some other factors that made Apple raise the price for the X.

Frankly speaking though, considering how much money in tax Apple managed to save through their questionable deal in Ireland, I would be even ashamed to ask more LOL

Assuming a 20% tax in the UK, the price without tax would be roughly 950 Pounds. Which is 1250 US Dollar. So, it's essentially $100 more. But not 30%. Those 10% could very well be due to other factors.

Tell me about it...in Sweden the 256GB model is $1571 after VAT. In my opinion only idiots thinks that is a reasonable price.

How in the world does 1000 - 20% = 950 ??? 20% of 1000 is 200. just like 20% out of 100 is 20.

EDIT: I see my math is flawed. I'm assuming 20% of 1000 instead of adding 20% to the pre tax price. The price without tax is 833 pounds.

Remember VAT is 20% in the UK. So it is roughly $1100 before taxes vs. $1000 in the US.

there is a market everywhere for this and people will pay it. it's a marker of social status not simply a phone anymore. when you are holding the ten and using it in your hands, it feels like a product from rolex.

Really? That’s nice I must be going up in the world, never thought that’d happen.
Bit of added bonus as I bought mine for practical reasons.

But hey anything that improves my social standing can’t be bad, now where the hell’s my Rolex you mentioned :D

Ordered my iPhone x the day after preorders went up. (AT&T servers were down for me on the first day). Originally had a mid December delivery, then it was updated to end of November delivery and just now my order page updated to “preparing for shipment.” I’m guessing I’ll get it this weekend.

Same here, other than I received a shipping confirmation saying it'll be delivered tomorrow. Looking forward to it!

You're doing it wrong :)

You have to take the 20% from the initial price, not the final.

950+ "20% from 950" (which is 190) = 1140. Which is the approx. price shown in the screenshot in Pounds Sterling. Which includes tax (or so I assume)

Another example:
In Germany, tax is 19%. The 256 GB iPhone is priced at 1319 EUR. That's roughly 1100 EUR before tax. Which is $1300. So even worse off than the UK.

You're right. I was doing it wrong (see my updated post). Also, we are calculating prices for two different storage tiers.

One other annoying aspect people often forget about with the UK though, is it’s not just the 20% VAT at point of sale.

There’s also a big fat import duty slapped onto things like mobile phones (or any electronics, among many other things) before they even get to bring them into the country. So that also has to be factored into the price.

Normally when you do the exchange rate from US dollars, plus import duty, plus VAT, they work out pretty close. Usually between around 20-30 bucks of a difference.

Nope. $100 more for the UK and even $150 more for Germany. For the 256 GB model. The calculations are in earlier posts. That is, without import, of course...but than again Apple wants to be a global company... (and as far as I remember, they do ship from within Europe to European destinations)

Your tax is like nothing. Its what? 8%? How cute.

The 256 GB iPhone X costs less in the US than the 64 GB one here

Prices overseas include VAT.

Makes little to no difference with the tiny amount of vat in the US. Still over a 200$ difference

The VAT in the UK is 20%, or about $220 in VAT on the base or $253 in VAT on the 256GB. So both models are about $100 or £76 more expensive in the UK excluding taxes. This is probably due to differences in laws between countries concerning warranties and replacements and electronic imports.

The SIM-Free will be the Verizon/Sprint model that supports CDMA.

If you've got Verizon/Sprint, then just buy the one available now at full price. It'll be the same phone as the SIM-Free model. The Verizon/Sprint ones will be cross compatible with GSM.

Times in the US have already improved. My original estimate from Verizon was that it would ship December 6, but it shipped yesterday (November 13) and will be delivered tomorrow November 15.

I mean that's really a personal problem to be completely honest.
