Apple never said x was bigger than Plus. But for a phone same size as an 8. It’s great. If it was a bit wider everyone would be happy

The question isnt if its bigger. Question by many is whether those coming from the Plus would notice a difference or not? I think most know its smaller.

I would be great (if you wouldn't mind) to show us the screen shots with the On Screen Keyboard up if thats possible. For me the viewing realestate is fine but the keyboard input for my big fingers my keep me on a 7 Plus for now.

TIA,
Earthdog

Ran an Xcode simulator and I get the feeling it will be cramped

Your screenshots seems out of scale (iPhone 8 seems taller than the X).

Perhaps these are sized by ‘points’ rather than actual physical size. The X screen should be physically slightly wider than the 8.

Also some more pics with iPhone 8 Plus on left, X in the middle and iPhone 8 at the right

this is weird, the X suppose to be a bit WIDER than the 8. unless it's deceiving, it could be a bit wrong here.

iPhone Screen Area. These numbers are based on the schematics below supplied by the Apple.com website

Screen Area Calculations

X
135.75mm x 63.12mm (Screen without cut out
8568.54 mm sq
34 x 4.99 (Area of cut out)
169.66 mm sq
8399 mm sq (Actual screen area)
13.02 Square Inches

8 Plus
121.54mm x 68.36mm
8308.5 mm sq
12.88 Square Inches

8
104.05mm x 58.5mm
6087 mm Sq
9.44 Square Inches

This makes the screen area of the X 1.09% larger than the 8 Plus and 37.92 % Large than the 8

All the info can be confirmed against the document provided by Apple at the following URL

Nope, it’s only about a 5% difference in screen area. Won’t be an issue. My case feels like a nice size in my hands and the entire thing being mostly screen will likely make the screen feel larger.

How much wider than 8 in portrait?

4.62 mm

This is still misleading because although more content will be displayed on the X at times it would still appear smaller than on the Plus.

And it'll still be bigger than the Plus.

No the video be same size as the non plus iphones if viewing without notch. The x is just a up and down stretced iphone, tall but not wide, looks stupid to not have a good ratio on the screen

It's not misleading at all. this is exactly how you calculate the area of a square/rectangle. These numbers are the exact amount of screen area available on each device.

The iPhone X vs any current iPhone is similar to PC monitors.

27” iMac for example vs say a 34” ultra wide monitor.

Different aspect ratios. Not all that misleading when you know they are different screens to begin with.

Depends on the video...

If you are talking about 16:9 videos the iPhone X is about 5" on the diagonal where the iPhone 8 is about 4.7. So the iPhone X is still larger, though not by a lot. If you're talking about wider aspect rations the iPhone X is still larger But not without some problems noted below.

Put this in another thread but adding to this discussion also because i think it is relative.

Here are some interesting tests I ran on the Xcode iPhone X simulator. I used the full screen options to pay back all the videos. There was no "zoomed" option at this point in the software, so it is either playing the video like this or playing it in a browser window.

Using Safari I played this 16:9 video off Youtube.com. Please note this is not using the YouTube app only the safari browser.

Screen Shot 2017-10-12 at 2.42.53 PM.png

Next I played the following video through the safari browser and selected the full screen option. It is a 21:9 video sample. youtu.be/iGnwVyQFT4A Again remember I selected full screen as there was no "zoomed" option.

Screen Shot 2017-10-12 at 3.00.34 PM.png

Here is a screen shot of the controls that were available to me from this view.

Screen Shot 2017-10-12 at 3.09.09 PM.png

Next used 4k video downloader to "borrow" the video from the link above. I was able to place it directly into the image gallery and play it as you would any video stored directly on the phone bypassing the browser. I selected full screen and this is how it looked.

Screen Shot 2017-10-12 at 2.59.19 PM.png

Add again a show of the controls that were available to me in the gallery app.

Screen Shot 2017-10-12 at 3.10.51 PM.png

And just to prove i had it loaded in the gallery

I see that the iphone x has a manual max brightness of 625 nits and auto of 850nits. Its the same as the iphone 8/8 plus?

Where did you find the number of 850 for the X?

I don’t know how accurate this link is, but it says the 8/8+ are about 530 with max slider and the 625 (they say 640) is with auto brightness. https://m.gsmarena.com/apple_iphone_8-review-1664p3.php

If the 850 you mention is true (and the link I provided is also true) then the X screen should be overall brighter than the 8/8+.

How much wider than 8 in portrait?

Here are some examples of the width between the iPhone X and the iPhone and iPhone Plus. (the yellow bars are the same in each picture)

My crude drawings don't take into consideration any skew in the photo's perspective... but it's close enough.

As a Plus user... I'm not exactly thrilled about the smaller keyboard on the X in portrait. But I will be getting some extra vertical real estate inside apps... so... :p
