That separate launch is to ensure first adopters choose the top of the line, higher cost offerings. The S will have it's moment in the sun all to itself. It is the smart play.

The R is going to be a compelling offering for Apple. Minus the screen tech (OLED), resolution, and dual cams, the R has virtually all the goodies of the S. The resolution shouldn't be that big of a deal for anyone coming from one of Apple's previous none - plus models. Might be a let down for Plus model owners though. Either way, I like the R. My girls are getting this phone... next year.

Exactly my thoughts on the screen. It uses the same exact PPI as all previous non-plus models before it and the XR now effectively becomes the entry level phone (also with the removal of the SE) so the screen will look identical to all standard 4” and 4.7” iPhone users.

Like the iPhone 4c and 5s, the. new phones are spelled “iPhone Xs” and “iPhone Xr” so cut it out.

Not according to Apple’s website. They’re all in caps now.
[doublepost=1536843421][/doublepost]
The Xr has the same PPI as the 8 Plus and much better battery life (which was already good on the 8 Plus).

Not the same PPI as the Plus iPhones, but the 4.7” iPhones.

85M? Just for reference Apple has never exceed 80M in any previous quarter, The highest number ever, was 78M. ( And the Xr has a much shorter launch window )

And Half of the new iPhones were Xr? 42.5M? That is entirely possible, but that is to suggest that other half as Xs?

iPhone X only sold 60M since launch according to latest research. That is over 3.5 quarters. They are suggesting Xs will sell close to 70% of that figure in one quarter?

Even if we account for 20% of the 85M won't be new iPhone, those figures are still bogus.

I hope they will take huge financial hit next quarter. The prices are a joke. And that comes from the person who can afford it! I need to see the review of the XR to decide. Overall I would say that is my next phone but I wanna see how the screen looks like. Im not overly optimistic taking under consideration the PPI
Just like the iPhone X was a flop

Trillion dollar company and that is what they come out with? geez
Unmatched performance. Same A12 as the iPhone XS. It’s quite a reasonable price for the product, if anything.

The last gen rez together with the same cpu as the flagship should yield better gfx performance you’d think?

I can see why. I mean I had assumed I would be getting the XS level iPhone. And while I can easily afford it, hundreds of dollars for deeper blacks on my screen - really? And I think I have used the 2X camera 4 or 5 times since I got the 7 plus so I won't miss that and you don't even lose portrait mode if that matters.

I mean I like the feature parity, but it makes it hard to spend 50% more for an almost identical phone.

720p display for $750?

They also sell the iPhone 7 still - $449. If the low price is really so important and you still want a brand new phone.

Or buy a used iPhone X from last year for probably $500! That's the best economical choice.

I think it is a bit of a silly choice to pinch pennies on an iPhone. I think every human on earth uses their iPhone for so many hours every single day that it is worthwhile to have newer models - I'd say get the very latest model. Put it on a payment plan, or see if your cell contract does some trickery to hide the real price tag from you with a 3 year contract - lol. That's what they do to fool people who complain about high prices. Look at cars that are $299 per month - it's a joke if you are a bit more savvy to managing your personal finances - but I realize most folks just aren't there. Many good people just cannot seem to grasp the hidden costs.

Having said that:

You can amortize the costs over a few years and those years will have been spent using a better phone. You can't get those years of time back! Photo's taken with the latest phones are so good - I think it's worth it just for taking highest quality photo's of family and friends. You Deserve It!

Such arguments are why there is "something for everybody" with all the various models

How is $749 a good deal exactly? Their normal lineup last year was $699 and $799 so they split the difference and went with $749 with one phone so the price seems in line with their normal generation phones, but then unlike all past generations this phone actually loses features. No 3D Touch. So it's $50 bucks less than last years 8 Plus but also has way more than $50 dollars worth of downgrades. Less PPI, No dual Camera's. And this is speculation but I'm betting it's 2gb ram versus the 3gb of the plus since a lower PPI means less data needing be stored in ram at any giving time.

"latest research" ???

You trust those numbers? I'd ask for references, but I already know too well that it will be propaganda - or market manipulation lies would be the way to put it.

This would make sense, although alot of people said that about the X last year and it outsold the 8 or the 8 Plus. I hope, for our wallets sake, the Xr vastly outsells the Xs or Xs Max so that this price point is still offered in the future (cause as soon as Apple thinks they could drop the ~$750 price point for $1k phones they will).

The Xr has the same PPI as the 8 Plus and much better battery life (which was already good on the 8 Plus).
At this point I just want them to test their luck as hard as somehow possible.

I want them to go REALLY deep, exclusive features for SKUs at 2 grand and up.

Stagnate, milk, render even the most diehard fanboys crazy.

Disgust as many people as possible, for regaining customer goodwill will take more than just a slight price decrease and no comment to go with it.

One can dream... :D

Faced with an unclear upgrade path, 6/S/7 Plus owners could decide too wait another year instead of buying the Xr with a lower display ppi and lack of dual camera, 3D Touch. The clear successor in form of the XS Max won't be an option due to increased price. Apple is pushing too hard on price elasticity with the XS Max. It almost feels like they abandoned the european mass market.
100% this. They really are showing their true face these days, more than ever.

To imagine what I used to pay for my iPhone 4... One model. Two storage options. Easy peasy.

Economies of scale have never been this good and yet they price these devices that get overtaken within a fairly short time by mid-range models like jewelry.

They are playing their walled garden cards really well, reminds me a bit of a sect. At some point when the blind love for this company wears off you begin to realize how they add a little surcharge here, a price increase there...

They want to convince devs to use subscriptions more, because more revenue to devs means more cut for the bitten fruit with the sole risk barer being the devs who jeopardize customer retention and goodwill...

I've long long tried to see everything through rose tinted glasses after Jobs died, but a lot has changed.

We went from premium to gotcha pricing. Some things certainly got better, but boy do you pay very dearly for that, way more than is reasonable.

And the best bit is the low bar diehard fanboys set: as long as Apple acts LEGALLY all is fine and not worth of critique.

Is that really the level to which we want to hold Apple accountable to for our thousands of Euros/Dollars investments?

They CAN price like this so it's fine? Oh just do get yesteryears model, that's your price point! Stop watching keynotes though, for you may get jealous...... You've seen YOUR pick for an entire year already in other people's hands. lol

That's the Apple way to serve everyone. Give me a break.

If that was their honest intention they'd give every model the same camera, because let's be honest, that's the actual upgrade you will feel every day.

I’d love to buy a new X at a reduced price but Cook is destroying millions of them in the name of profit.

Except iOS 12 has been running amazingly well on older devices. So your logic kind of falls apart there. Furthermore, you're saying real innovation comes at the OS level, yet you're complaining about it making old devices run slow. You can't have both unless you scrap big features from old devices, but something tells me you'd complain about that too.

Complaining? No. Just predicting what will happen based on a pattern that has repeated itself without fail. Upgrading to the latest OS on older hardware is too risky, but Apple unsurprisingly encourages it.

My point is, there’s no value in introducing new hardware if the accompanying OS hasn’t advanced as well. Joe Average may not do much with his phone, but he should expect his phone to do more for him if Apple wants to justify its premium image

You mean the Xs, that is the same price as last year's X which was the best selling iPhone?

Apple may be playing the restaurant menu game. Restaurants frequently put a $30 steak on the menu with their $10-15 sandwiches and entrees. It makes the other offerings look like a bargain by comparison to the steak. Sure some order the steak (the iPhone XS) but most go for the relative bargain options (the iPhone XR).

This strategy will certainly sell a lot more people into the higher profit per unit model of the XR.

It's a very decent phone, I think Apple was smart here in having a flagship quality phone at a reasonable flagship price. It's going to displace a lot of these other overpriced flagship phones like from Google and Samsung. Personally I'm going to overspend and get the XsMax simply because I need a larger screen, but if they had a XrMax I would seriously consider it.

Except you're dead wrong. Apple cheaped out so heavily they decided to omit the higher res screens that have previously been used for the Plus models and gave it a significantly lower res model, hence the 326 PPI. The Plus models have had PPIs over 400.

I don't know where you from...but in my world the 1500 Euro for a phone is as far from reasonable as it gets. Its not about the price. Its about value and there is no value in that proposal. I remember paying like 500 USD for original iPhone. That was the cutting edge technology the same as todays phones. And even adjusting for inflation we are not coming even close to what Apple is trying to sell us now.

So funny, everyone whines on forums about price, yet they sell fine every year.

If you want something that gets updates, security patches, somewhat environmentally responsible, and some level of privacy there is only one game in town -- iPhone. The phone will easily work fine for 3-4 years so amortize the cost, problem solved.

Yes they're raising prices, so keep your phones longer or get an older model (seriously, the 8 is a wonderful phone for the money). A cheap battery replacement every 2 years will keep it running fine. And sure the phones 10 years ago were $500-600, but that was TEN years ago.

I just want that blue wallpaper

I might be a weirdo, but the thing that excites me most about new iOS releases is seeing what new wallpapers are offered. Unfortunately as of late Apple tends to make a lot of the cool ones exclusive to specific devices. I bet each Xr colour will have an exclusive matching wallpaper.
