Just tried one at lunch, its a 2 handed phone for sure but I kinda liked it, did make my 8 feel small straight after. Looked real nice in white too.
I disagree with this statement, but you're entitled to your opinion. Faster processor and faster face ID negates your "superior" comment. While I prefer smaller phones, it wasn't the size of the phone I was concerned about, it was the screen. Those concerns have been put to rest. The screen is great. This phone is a definite upgrade over all previous generations of iPhones. Enjoy whatever device you use, and I'll enjoy my XR for the next few years. If you're cash starved you'll buy an iPhone X refurb which is a superior phone to the XR potato in every dimension.

It’s a personal thing. I don’t know why people get bent out of shape over someone else’s choice of phone. I had a 6s and loved it. I have had the XR for the past four+ months and love it. I have more important things on my plate of concerns than the phone I use.
Sure, it's not like it's something you have to use every day all day.. I'm happy for you and a little envious that you don't care![]()
I care. It’s just not as high on my “care list” as many other things.I did a lot of research, checked out the phones available, made my purchase according to my needs, desires, and budget, and moved on. I suspect you did the same.
I still say Apple should have offered the XR in two sizes like the iPhone 8 before it. It’s too big for a lot of people no doubt and Apple have sort of pushed people to either buy iPhone 8’s or keep older devices by not meeting the demand for a sensible size phone IMO.
I use an 8+ and it’s a bit of a monster in the pocket even if I’ve gotten used to it. My wife would never buy an 8+ or an XR due to the sizes and that’s pushing away sales of the more expensive handsets. I think there was just the arrogant assumption people would just suck up the size difference but this clearly didn’t happen. I get so many people see my 8+ and tell me they ‘could never use that’.. lol
No. They didn’t. Those who are absolutely cash starved will buy XR. There are others who will stick to X/XS/2019 X and so on. In 2019 assuming these same sizes are available I’ll upgrade my 2017 X to a 2019 then X 5.8”. I have no choice. XR is way too big. The same goes for many people.
If they did it in a louder fashion it would become too obvious.
True. I kept it for about a week and I simply cannot see myself using it. Went back to the 8. Even if budget wasn't an issue. I don't like this whole X-R-S generation and I know that's subjective.
Whether the X is better than the XR though.. yea, it objectively is.
I don't know.. I think that would cause even more fragmentation and user confusion. I just don't find the 'flagship-flagship XL-cheapo nerfed colourful flagship' to be a compelling annual release model, and the lacklustre sales kinda prove it. Same story as with the iPhone 5c all over again. My hope is that Apple would go back to focusing time, resources and talent on ONE awesome device (maybe in two sizes) and that's about it.

I agree with this, and I think, assuming a redesign in 2020 (smaller notch, flat sides, etc), there will be a shuffle in the lineup. What that will look like, I don't know, but I definitely think there is room to revamp the sizing/flagship vs. non flagship aspect.
Right now, I want an Xr-sized flagship, and Apple doesn't make it. Seems absurd since the Xr is a sweet spot for many I would imagine.
Good for you. The X still has:
- Far better screen with 3D Touch
- Better camera
- More premium materials and form factor
Right now, if they make a SE sized, truly all-screen flagship, it will drive a supercycle that will put the 6 to shame. THAT is the sweet spot for many. Literally everybody I know is unhappy with how large smartphones have become.
XR was released with the deliberate intention of up selling people to the X/XS.

I agree that Apple really should consider another smaller phone in the future, I know they have the 4.7 inch iPhone, but that’s likely coming to an end.
However, I still think larger smart phones are favorable and have been growing a trend for quite some time. Even for the select people that you know around you that don’t like large phones, for the majority, I would say that’s polar opposite, where they *do* want larger displays, bigger batteries, etc, and of course smart phone manufacturers are including all of the latest technology into the larger phones intentionally to promote higher sales. It’s really how it is in today’s smart phone era.
How can you be so resolute that the people around me are "select few" and you profess to know what's the polar opposite for the majority? You can't. You know as much as I do.
Manufacturers have been aggressively pushing larger screens to such an extent it's now impossible to even find a smaller device form factor in a recently released premium category. Habit forming? Yes. Honest preference? Not necessarily.
Can't speak about choice when there's no equitable pool of options to choose from.
Well, it is undeniable that the mean smartphone screen size has gone up from the 3.5” iPhone days. For a long time it seemed to be a desire for bigger screens that Apple tried to stop, until they eventually released the iPhone 6/6 Plus with a screen size which was already the de facto standard in the industry.
You could say that this was due to manufacturers “pushing” larger screens but the last flagship iPhones with small screens (5 and 5S) were released at a time when most Android manufacturers already offered only larger devices and there wasn't a huge switch to Apple devices. In fact, when Apple released the 6/6 Plus, there was a huge switch to Apple devices again, not before (the so-called supercycle).
So statistically, there seems to be at least some evidence suggesting that people want large displays (or at least larger that 4”), while you only provide anecdotal evidence, and no matter how many people you know, you can’t get an accurate representation of what the whole market wants with that.
How can you be so resolute that the people around me are "select few" and you profess to know what's the polar opposite for the majority?.
Let me reiterate, for the -select few- people that you know, doesn’t speak for the majority That prefer larger displays today. Now, rather they have the choice or not, is irrelevant, because that’s what smart phone manufacturers are releasing, it’s all 6 inch displays and above. You’re small anecdote of a few people doesn’t correlate to the fact that large displays are the primary now. I see this argument made often, where someone says “I know *some* people that prefer small displays”, OK? But but that doesn’t translate to usage for numbers for those who actually do use larger displays. I’m not saying there’s not a place for a smaller iPhone in this world, but that’s not been the ‘norm’ for years.
Back to my original point, when you have only have so many options on the market with larger displays, what else does the consumer have a choice of? And to be perfectly honest, I’m surprised Apple is even still offering a 4.7 inch iPhone, considering most of the other manufactures have moved away from that display size.
