Although I’m fully aware the new XR doesn’t have 3D Touch, all my other non 3D Touch devices like the iPad Pro 10.5 v2 for example, allow me to press and hold any notifcfication from the lock screen to quickly interact with it from the lock screen rather than tap on the notification to fully open the associated app. When I press and hold the notification on the XR lock screen nothing happens.

I contacted Apple today and spoke with a senior technical adviser, to identify why this feature has been disabled on the XR where is works everywhere else and they told me they don’t know why.....my thoughts are that in order to create a very clear distinction between the XS and the XR apple are making a real point of the fact that the XR doesn’t have 3D Touch by stripping away useful features. What a surprise Apple....another ‘Brave’ counter intuitive decision to increase user workflow and make their lives harder!

Is anyone else with the XR experiencing the same behaviour?

Just to be clear I know I can replicate the ‘quick reply’ type behaviour from the lock screen by swiping a notification left and the selecting view, however this method just adds another click to achieve something that can be achieved on all other devices 3D Touch enabled or not, just by pressing any holding and when you use this action a hundred times a day, extra taps just become slow and cumbersome.

Same here, works on my iPad just fine. Hopefully it's just a bug.

Same issue here, and very desapointed about it.
Are you sure that IPhone XR is the only one « non 3D Touch » iPhone with this behaviour ?

As yours my 12.9 iPad Pro works fine with long press on notifications.

I’m not sure as I don’t have anything older to test it with, can anyone with an iPhone 6 on iOS 12.01 test this and confirm please?

Long press on an iPhone SE running 12.0.1 does nothing.

Thanks for confirming.....so this is purely being held back in software based on device, why on earth would they do that? I love this new XR but I can’t stand the dumb decisions apple makes with their software??

I discovered the same issue on mine last night. It’s really annoying, and you’re right it works fine on my iPad without 3D Touch. I’m missing that 3D Touch a lot more than I expected :(

I just switched to an old iPhone 6 this weekend, to see how iOS 12 runs on it, and I can confirm that long-press on lockscreen notifications does nothing.

As has been said, none of the non-3D Touch iPhones have that functionality. I presume you became use to it on a 3D Touch handset?

Yes I’m aware of that but there is absolutely no reason to hold it back when it can be replicated with a long press just like on an iPad that doesn’t have 3D Touch.....this is the point I’m trying to make with this thread.....why would they hold this back? It’s useful, and most importantly improves workflow.

The point is they aren’t “holding it back”, it has never been a feature on non-3D Touch iPhones. It would be something new if it was to be supported now.

Hopefully a mistake that will be corrected in an update, I wouldn’t think Apple would remove a feature like that just maliciously

But it hasn’t been removed, it isn’t there on the 5S, SE or 6 either.

Isn’t there and removed aren’t the same result? I was saying I think it will get fixed in an update. 12.1.1 is already in beta

Removed would imply it had been there and was then taken away. The truth is it’s never been there to be removed.

Has Apple ever stated that it’s a feature of the Xr?

I see what you’re saying. Last time I had an iPhone without force touch was 2014 so I was assuming people were saying long touch used to be there on phones without force touch. My Air2 has had it since iOS11 was released..

A better way to put it would likely be to say that with the expansion of long press to simulate various 3D Touch actions it's unfortunate that it hasn't expanded to lock screen notifications (especially in the case of the newest XR model that doesn't support 3D Touch).

Hopefully they make good on the promise to bring haptic touch to more places than control center.

I’m not commenting on the pros and cons or even having an opinion, just saying that it hasn’t been on a non-3D Touch model in the past and Apple probably deliberately did it to keep the feature exclusively on the premium models.

As mentioned above, It’s been a feature on none 3D Touch iPads for a long time so the code is already there, so yes they are ‘holding it back’

The weird thing is that they developed workarounds to simulate 3D Touch in other areas of the interface... so why leave it out in just this one area?

To entice you to buy the more expensive model. Plain and simple..
