I ordered a 256gb XS max silver and a space gray series 4 44mm from Verizon, ships to my house, 9/21 delivery. Broad availability for colors.
I’m having an interesting bug on the Apple site. When I pick Verizon as my carrier, then go into checking pickup in my area, when I click around the color/size options, the phone always switches to the AT&T version. It happens every time, in multiple browsers.
On the Canadian Apple site it’s still estimating launch day delivery for all except the 512 GB models. It’s 2 hours after preorders went live as I type this. I remember ordering a X for my brother last year and missing a launch day delivery even though I ordered within 10 minutes.

Canada is looking great. Most of the iPhones are shipping at the 21st but surprisingly the 512GB iPhone XS Max and Series 4 are shipping on mid-October.
The app had some spurious contact details for me and wouldn’t let me edit them.
I used the website instead, still had the spurious data but let me change it no problem.
When I selected the Nike + 44mm it said Monday 8th but when I completed order it went back to Friday 5th which is launch day for the Nike+ models.
The demand is much lower compared to last year iPhone X release, yes I know that for certain.

Apple began accepting pre-orders for the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and Apple Watch Series 4 models at 12:01 a.m. Pacific Time, and a half hour later, shipping estimates have slipped for many iPhone XS Max and Apple Watch Series 4 models in the United States. At launch, all devices listed delivery estimates of Friday, September 21, but now estimates have largely slipped to October.
iPhone XS Max models in all colors and all capacities from Sprint, AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile are now listing delivery dates ranging from September 28 to October 12, but in some areas, in-store pickup on launch day remains an option.
For the SIM-free iPhone XS Max models, which must be purchased in full up front and are not eligible for the iPhone Upgrade Program, most continue to list September 21 delivery dates. Shipping estimates for the iPhone XS have not slipped and supplies of that device appear to be plentiful.
Almost all stainless steel Apple Watch Series 4 models are now listing shipping dates of October 5 to October 12 with the exception of some 40mm models, and supplies of aluminum Apple Watch Series 4 models available for launch day delivery are also beginning to wane.
Multiple Cellular + GPS models are still available, but the less expensive GPS-only models are almost all listing October shipping dates.
Shipping estimates for the Apple Watch Series 4 and iPhone XS Max are likely to continue to slip as additional orders are placed. Those who were not able to place an order early will not be able to get launch day delivery through an online shipment, but Apple retail stores are likely to have stock available for walk-in purchases.
The first pre-orders for iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and Apple Watch Series 4 will be delivered on Friday, September 21, the official launch date for the devices.

I just ordered 3 Xs Max iPhones; one for myself, one for the dog and one for my 3 year old son.

I think most customers will prefer the Xr over the Xs and I'm confident the Max will sell way more than the Xs.
It was a wise decision to sell the Xr in October, many customers are eligible to upgrade this month and will be tempted by the Xs just because it the only "small" size available. They'll sell less units this quarter because Xr is missing, but they'll perform a lot better in the following quarter as the Xr hits the shelves.
Its really many that do monthly payments through their carrier which makes it possible for alot more to order it..

True but it's also the most sensible thing to do no matter how much money you have.
Not surprising to me demand is tepid. The price is scratching the top of the disposable income comfort level - and I’m surrounded by engineers at low 6 figures.
