Nah. They just didn't build that many in the first place. All part of Marketing 201.
People keep parroting this year after year, even after Apple announces record sales. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

As a hardware company, Apple has zero incentive to limit sales, and they certainly don't need to resort to this in order to generate hype.

I pre-ordered at about 3:15 EST and chose delivery (Oct 5-12) for the Xs Max. Is there anyway to change it to an in store pick up? I would’ve picked this option but the store near my home showed no availability but I forgot to check the NYC stores which show availability on Sept 21. Anyway to change it once “Order Placed” status?

Absolutely, people need to talk to actual marketing professionals (at a company like Apple), and they will tell you, unequivocally, there's no value in artificially limiting supply.

Sweet. Ordered at 12:03. Delivery next Friday on 2 Series 4 watches. My series 1 has been super but the series 4 is an offer I can't refuse. One for the wife too. Really an awesome product with the new features.

I just checked att and all max were showing launch day delivery.

It’s virtually the same phone as last year (except a larger model is also offered). They should have the process down by now. There are people on the fence (like me) but by having plenty of supply it would make it better if you can get one when you want and not wait six weeks.

I honestly think it’s because everyone who buys phones on launch day already got the X. And I’m not upgrading my £1150 purchase for a few years yet.

I think that the colorful phones will be Apples big sellers and cause lines at stores. The Xs line may sell well but the cost is going to stop people because either they really can’t afford it or because they can’t justify paying that much for a phone even if they can afford it.

That's because of our price

Xs is 40€ cheaper in Germany than in Italy, but it doesn't really make a difference when you're spending more than 1000€
I think people from the US don't know how cheaper the iPhone is for them, we're talking about $300 (and even more if you live in a state with low taxes) for the Xs and $400 for the Max.
And I guess our average income is lower too. Good for you guys from the US, and Apple is doing great so doesn't need to cut prices on the EU, but they can't expect to sell as many iPhones as they did 4 years ago with iPhone 6 here, they're really too expensive. I guess it is the same in other countries in the world.

This will be a crazy quarter for Apple. The demand for these two phones has been huge and they're not even the big sellers. When the XR goes on sale, that'll be the big one.

We also need to remember that most of their sales do NOT come on release day. They happen in the coming months from people that wander into an Apple Store or other outlet and buy them. Most don't line up to buy on release day like many of us did last night.

Did anyone check out without their carrier details? First time I did it to check out quicker.

The demand is much lower compared to last year iPhone X release, yes I know that for certain.

Even if that’s true, the reason is apparent. Last year’s device was a brand new design and it was 2 months late to the market because of production issues, so everyone wanted to get one ASAP.

Wow... I'm actually kinda happy my browser was glitching on att.com and I went to order my watch through Best Buy in the meantime. I never would've guessed the shipping times for the watches would be slipping more than the phones. I'm upgrading from the Series 0 42mm space grey aluminum for a S4 silver aluminum 44mm. Got the phone too after panicking for 35 minutes trying to get the site to take my address.

Seriously you were panicking when your order for an electronics communication device was processing for 35 mins.

This is what is wrong with society, people have viewed the iPhone and AW as a substance addiction, as if their life depended on it. You still have an existing iPhone and/or AW, why the panic for a week or two delay, really. I can understand if panicking for a life and death situation, however the issue you mention does not fit the bill.

Time to get your priorities realigned.

I ended up getting an iPhone Xs 64GB in GLD, delivery 21 Sep. I didn’t have to get up early or anything, the prices are ridiculous.

Replace the order and cancel the previous one.

It's actually slipping very slow. It was hours before the sim free version was not available on launch day.

Just the initial instant gratification surge, the telling sign is the following months momentum. I have been without an iPhone for 10 months. Had the X previously however found FaceID too slow to unlock for my preference, hope this has been improved upon.

What did you end up buying? I regretted the last time I switched away from iOS and went to BlackBerry. Samsung Note 9 is enticing as it is priced lower in India than US which is quite surprising.

The same old myth every year.
Companies like Apple make money by selling stuff and not holding it. Keeping hold of it means customers could get tired of waiting and choose alternatives that are plentiful nowadays. I know you think this is some sort of marketing strategy, it would probably have worked at the times when Apple had no competition or weak competition. Not now. Apple needs to sell a lot and quick, not wait around.

AT&T preorder was the smoothest it’s been in years for me. Their buy one get one deal got me 2 max 256gb gold. Great deal for me cause the wife needed a new phone and wanted an iPhone for years.

Got the S4 over on the Apple app after just as smooth.

Going to be a great weekend on the 21st.

So.. nearly 7 hrs here in Australia since pre-orders started. iPhone XS in 256GB still available to collect on launch day.
iPhone XS Max 512GB pushed back 1-2 weeks. But in all honesty.. IMO only.. isn't A$2,668.00 (which includes AppleCare) just a little on the ridiculous side? Going back a few years ago.. you had next to no chance on collecting on launch day if werent 'tigger happy' in the first 15min. Now.. you could almost wait a week and still get one

I got the iPhone SE free no carrier contract to sign. Great phone, I will use it as a back-up, as I ordered a Xs 64GB in GLD. 256GB is too much storage for me.

There is no "process" that can get millions of complicated phones built in a shorter amount of time. The available manufacturing lines are what they are and they are sized so they will be busy all year long.

The only "process" that would work is to start final manufacture of phones a month or so earlier, then store larger amounts of phones for longer period of time. Doing that would vastly increase possibility of leaks of working phones. It would also cut a month or so off of an already short development period, taking away a month of time to innovate on that model. Apple doesn't want to do that. They already, obviously, stock several weeks of full scale production. But to really satisfy first day demand, they would have store many more weeks of production.
