I’m not quite sure what I was expecting, since I haven’t used a Plus sized model since 2017. The weight difference between the X and XS Max is definitely noticeable, but isn’t a deal breaker though.

Are you guys happy with its center of gravity while doing single-handed thumb contortionism to swipe up from the bottom and swipe down from the top right? (is such a single handed use even possible at all on the Max?)
Nope. Single hand use is very difficult. You can swipe up and down but definitely won’t be able to reach the top unless you have huge hands.

So here’s what I’ve noticed having it for about half a day... although it’s a heavier device, the form factor distributes the weight over a wider area when holding it so it isn’t as concentrated. This might be the reason some feel it’s lighter than the X. And for two handed use for me, I don’t have to interlock my fingers, so to speak, like I did with a narrower phone so it’s more comfy. So that’s my prognosis - it feels better because the iPhone XS Max is made out of science and ergonomics.

Absolute pifflewaffle! Distributes weight over a wider area! Utter pseudoscientific dirge! Oh wow, that’s hilarious! I’m going to get some mileage out of this!! Cheers!! :D

You are very excited!

I kind of laughed when I picked up my naked Max vs my 8 Plus with a case and screen protector. The weight difference is noticeable, but not a concern at all. With this stainless steel band, I expected it to weigh more vs aluminum. No complaints here. It feels premium.

What’s funny is people saying it feels lighter then the 8+. How can something heavier feel lighter?!

Weight distribution is equally important when it comes to ergonomics, not super complicated. For example, where the bulk of the battery resides (so if it’s bottom heavy, the phone may feel less weighty towards the top).

I strongly recommend visiting an apple store to try this phone before buying. It is huge and fairly heavy. Will suit some but not for everyone....

Yes I know this. My knives I use for work are well balanced and feel lighter then they look. But comparing 2 things in which we know 1 is heavier then the other and saying it’s lighter is boneheaded.

If you’re going the semantics route maybe they should qualify with “perceived to feel lighter.” Seems unnecessary when we all understand basic numbers to spell out that it’s a perception ‍♂️

This. For me, I hold my Max with a more open grip than I do my X. So it’s more comfortable and I’m probably recruiting muscles in a different way.

It was my first impression: Waaah is it heavy.

iPhone 6 Plus was a leightweight. iPhone 6S Plus was heavier. And XS Max is heavier again. It‘s the glass back.

It's heavier due to the stainless steel body and a noticeably larger battery compared to the Plus models that came before.

And that includes a glass back and wireless charging coils, which never had before the iPhone X/8.

The wireless charging coil weighs nothing at all (I know because I have torn an 8/X before). The Face ID module is light, and unsurprisingly the screen due to the OLED panel is far lighter than 8/8 Plus and previous models.

I don’t mean to be overly technical, but it’s part of my nature, but you can’t say something that’s included as a hardware component with the charging coil ‘Weighs Nothing at all’, that’s not possible. It does add weight to the iPhone one way or the other.

Interestingly enough, the iPhone XS Max is only 6g heavier over the iPhone 8+. Which likely isn’t that noticeable.

Yeah, it adds weight but once it’s seated in the chassis it’s unnoticeable.

You are correct no one is truly going to notice the weight difference in the iPhone 8+ and iPhone XS Max. Technical people have been told it weighs more so here we go. Just senseless to me, but that is my opinion!

Okay so I've had last night and all this morning to get a feel for it and am agreeing with a lot of the opinions above. It's definitely heavier feeling that the 7 Plus that I'm coming from, which we know is the case anyway from the specs. It's noticeable on pickup and after holding for a while. (I still have the 7 Plus here for the weekend until I post it off to a buyer.)

The XS Max is way nicer to hold though as it's slimmer and am expecting to get used to the weight soon. Putting Apple's leather case on the Max does seem to push it over a threshold where I consider it weighty in a way that some older devices were.

As for the guys suggesting that it's lighter than the X. My other half has an X and that nonsense gave us the giggles. You'd have to be a pretty ridiculous person to say something like that. 174g v 208g. That's 34g difference.

In terms of devices of this weight class.. that's a huge difference!

Anyway, weight isn't the biggest gripe with the Max. It's the apps. Most of my apps look rubbish at the moment. Resolution isn't quite retro, but you do immediately notice it when you open almost any non Apple app. Everything looks like a step backwards compared to my 7 Plus and the X. We had a nice side by side comparison of apps last night on the 7+, X and Max, and the Max lost every round.

Photos and videos look great though, no issue there, it's nothing to do with the screen. It's just the scaling. When apps get updated soon the Max is going to be legitimately gorgeous!

Oh, my other gripe - books. Last night in bed was the first time I noticed the notch when reading. Hit me like a brick. Bit of a sad panda, but again, I'll get used to it. Don't think the notch will bother me or even get noticed any other time though.

11 or 12 will be close to the ultimate phone. No notch and lighter, but same screen size. Larger camera sensor. Voila. Can move phone resources towards the Apple Watch and speed up its improvement then. 13 and 14 will have really impressive stabilisation tech. Check out the Go Pro 7. Very impressive. That tech is getting smaller, will be small enough for phones soon.

Post a vid of your max deadlift/bench/squat and your bodyweight so we can see what strength class you fall into. Just so we can see that you're legit of course, you won't mind since you brought it up of course?

(Yes this is where you worm out of it and say or do absolutely anything except prove you're legit).
no worry. I'll show my deadlift.

It's just too heavy. I've been using one again today. Can't take it. Not pleasant to hold for any length of time.

I absolutely loved my 6S Plus and was so excited for the new Max. I didn’t keep it due to poor connectivity issues but that’s a whole other story.

As for the weight, I was surprised at the difference in weight. I poopooed anyone that complained about the Max being too heavy. However, in the short 5 days I had the Max, I kept looking for alternative ways to hold it as my pinky actually hurt. I ended going to a new X and it’s much more comfortable in the hand for me.

I can’t believe the amount of grown men complaining that a phone weighs to much lol. Seriously though, it’s only a few ounces.
