Hi,
I'm having similar problems. Running 4.2.1 (so therefore updated to the new baseband), phone crashed today. When I tried to turn it on, the apple logo would flash for a few seconds, then turn off. I connect it to my computer, get the dreaded 1015 restore error, and the screen shows a usb to iTunes logo.

I think I understand I need to use redsn0w with a custom ispw, but the problem is, I cannot enter DFU mode from the usb to iTunes logo screen. How do I do that?

hey i bought an iphone 4 version 4.1 from the us (locked of course) and jailbroke it with limera1n. 2 days ago i got stuck in DFU mode all i can see is the apple logo.
i tried restoring using tinyumbrella (of course i had previously saves my shsh blobs for 4.1) but i get error 1604, i searched for this error and i got that it must be a problem with my usb cable or port, but i changed 2 cables and i have 4 usb ports and i still get the same error.
i did not try to restore to 4.2 because i live outside the us, and i dont wana upgrade before making sure on which version i will be able to unlock first.
anyone has any suggestions??
thanks in advance :)

Please Please Please!
I'm having the same problem being stuck on recovery mode on my iPhone 3G when I'm on 4.2.1.
COULD SOMEONE PLEASE POST STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS like the guy did with the 3GS?!
I tried doing the steps the way the guy posted just in 3G form, but I can't find the correct things.
Please someone help me out, I've only had my new iphone for a week!!!
Thanks!

DFU mode: http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=1034

Also, edit your host files. When you see error 1015 again, use TinyUmbrella to kick your iPhone out of recovery.

thanks a lot for the link, i followed the steps, but i am still getting error 1604 :S
i guess i have no other choice left, i must restore and upgrade to 4.2.1, i hope i won't get the same error as well!

Before you go to 4.2.1 edit your host files.

C:Windows/system32/drivers/etc/hosts

Mac > right click finder/go to folder/etc/hosts

Your host files should look like the below. Try that then restore to 4.1. Put your iPhone in DFU mode then restore with 4.1

4.2.1 jailbreak on an iPhone 4 will be tethered.

i have two questions:
first, in the link that you posted (concerning error 1604) it says that i should cut the file i find in the folder iPhone Software Updates, should i paste it back to its original location now?
second, i did not quite get what you are telling me to do... are you suggesting that i upgrade to 4.2 then downgrade?
currently my hosts look like this

# Copyright (c) 1993-2009 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

# localhost name resolution is handled within DNS itself.
# 127.0.0.1 localhost
# ::1 localhost
74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com
#127.0.0.1 gs.apple.com

I'm saying not to upgrade to 4.2.1.

In the host file delete the #127.0.0.1 gs.apple.com and leave the above address. Save it as a new host file without an extension. Then replace the new file with the old one inside the folder.

I think Im gona go crazy!!!
Now Im getting error 3194!!!!!!
This is hopeless :(

yes i saved the shsh files before jailbreaking, I installed Cydia and chose make my life easier, could this cause any problem?

No, shouldn't cause an issue. Are you putting your iPhone in DFU mode first before restoring? Also, is your host file correct? What version of iTunes do you have (10.1)?

Yes of course I'm putting it DFU (besides iTunes doesn't recognize my iPhone if I connect it without putting it in DFU mode)
And yes I have iTunes version 10.1

You might as well upgrade to 4.2.1

I was reading your earlier posts about an unlock. The iPhone 4 can't be unlocked on 4.1 or 4.2.1 but you can still jailbreak of course.

Yeah i know it cannot be unlocked, but you said 4.2.1 is tethered, so I'd rather keep 4.1. But I guess I have no other option left!

Thanks for the quick reply, but that's not my problem. I'm capable of unlocking, but the amateur mistake I committed is that I tried restoring through iTunes and now I'm stuck in the USB to iTunes logo on my iPhone 3G. Someone seemed to have found a way out of this problem "for his friend" but his directions were too hard for me to follow and I couldn't and can't find custom ipsw's.
Please help this broken Apple soul
Thanks

Heeeeelp

Ok so my problem seems like a couple other peoples on here but I thought I'd give it a try.

I took my new Iphone 4 a friend to jailbreak and he got it all activated, jailbreaked and everything. Then I accidently held down the power button which caused it to restart. Now it's stuck on the itunes and usb cord screen but with no slider thing that says for emergency calls only or anything like that like when I first got it. I have the 4.2.1 and redsn0w all downloaded onto my computer but I can't get my phone to go into DFU mode to restore it or do anything for that matter.

I'm hoping someone had the same problem and fixed it, HELP please!!! Thanks in advance!

You have to run redsn0w in tethered mode to turn your iPhone back on. No need to restore. Your friend left out a minor detail.

I don't mean to be annoying, but PLEASE HELP ME!!!!
Somone help me get out of my iPhone 3G USB to iTunes screen on 4.2.1. Any help would be nice.
Thanks

If you have the 6.15.00 baseband on your iPhone you need a custom firmware to restore. If you didn't upgrade your baseband, put your iPhone on DFU mode then restore in iTunes.

My Fix

Alright, so this is how I ended up working out my USB to iTunes recovery mode stuck on iPhone 3G 4.2.1. BB 6.15.0.
So you'll need custom ipsw found here: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=681MCLXO
Put your iPhone into DFU mode using redsn0w
Then, for those like me, who didn't know what to do with the custom firmware, you're next step is to watch this vid. (how restore using custom ipsw): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ON768rmOlQY
From there it's straightforward you'll just need to use cydia to unlock.
Check this thread out for more help: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1057032/
Specifically the directions by: "Lense"
I'll try to answer any questions I get within the next day or so since I'm not the active on forums and also I'm kinda of an am at iPhone
Thanks

Ok so I ran redsn0w in tethered mode and then the computer said it went into DFU mode but now it just won't turn on at all and the computer won't recognize it anymore.
