I don't want a new phone later this year but I sure want that to be my own personal decision. I want to know I can afford (whatever) as well as I did a year ago.

You are assuming that trump / bannon / the heritage foundation / the billionaire bros / the gop congress / and the trumpanzees haven’t figured out a way to “rig” the constitution!Hopefully he did not promise that he will not retire before Trump leaves office. That could be anywhere from 4 to 12 years.

What he likes, what he seems to have a pathological need for, is attention.

LOL to all the people who ran out and panic-bought because they thought the prices would increase. Never will be in short supply of suckers and buying things they really don't need.
It's a symptom of how many Republican congress members own Apple stock.
People panicked because the President is insane and obviously had no idea what he is/was doing. The only reasons he granted these exemptions is because of the panic.

That $1M won't get him through the door at Mar-a-lardon. Add a zero and Drumpf might allow you in. The more greenbacks that you give him, the longer her will love you. Mind you that love is down to seconds per million $$$.

exactly. People that matter to Republicans started to lose money and got the right people to pressure Trump. But the very back and forth, up and down disruptions hurt companies, investors and consumers even if many of the bad decisions get reversed.
And this is a huge part of the problem. Consumers can buy or not buy, but with a petulant and capricious hand on the tiller of the economy, companies can't plan for the future. Last week it was "do we need a new factory?" and next week it will be "wait, what? Will the 'pause' end in 90 days and we're back to higher tariffs and a crashing bond market? Or will Trump just announce some 'deals' and declare the trade war over? Or will something else happen?"
So if Trump really wanted companies to reshore their manufacturing, this isn't helping. The instability is the problem. Tariffs were paused just days after Trump said that this was not a negotiating tactic and that tariffs would stay. Companies don't know whether to hire employees or lay them off. They don't know whether to retool factories, build a new one or shut them down. I guarantee one thing - China and Europe and other big economies seem more like the place to do business now. Nice work!
Honestly, who in their right mind would want to invest anything in a country where laws change radically nearly every hour ?
I certainly don't buy a new phone every year. My average is 3.5 years for phones and 4 years for MacBooks. My iPad is 7 years old. My old phone will become a modern iPod with CarPlay. My old Macbooks get repurposed with Linux. I sent a 2012 MBP to recycling a few months ago.
