I agree that the appeal of this design may be dependent upon the scale of the device. If this design is legit and it's the same scale as a 5.5g iPod then certainly it's aesthetics are questionable. But when you reduce it to the size of something that can fit in the palm of your hand it could easily transition from "fugly" to cute.

In a few years we'll be wearing these things on our wrists like Dick Tracy.

Not to get off topic, but why couldn't we now? It could be calculator-watch-chic.

Take a shuffle, remove the wheel. add a screen, project a virtual wheel on the screen, add Bluetooth(tm)(mc)(c)(r), and voila.

The Fossil iPod...

Did anyone else notice the title of the window says "Nano-power.psd"?

If those come out, I'll eat my hat.

See, I think that something is fishy about that image (it just looks all kinds of fake - but who knows, it could be a legit ad mock-up with incomplete images), but seeing as I trust ThinkSecret far more than these 9to5Mac people, I think the most likely possibility is that this will be similar to the new design for the new iPod itself - not for the nano.

Hard drive form factor is really the biggest issue and I'm not sure they can get the 1.8" drives into anything smaller -- but perhaps Apple is planning releasing a flashbased larger iPod?

It seems odd that the Nano replacement would be so much wider (if the pictures are to be believed -- of course it could be slightly larger than the shuffle and have a screen) -- the width is one of the aspects that really sells the device, and the length is inconsquential.

Very, very interesting.

Well.... those ugly things got taken down.
Apple's design department is losing Italians or something, because they are tending to rehash and make semi-garish designs this year.

BTW, needs more elevator. You can never have enough elevator.

in addition to a bad design, don't you think it's ironic that this pic was released just a day or two after the rumored new colors were released?

im afraid apple risks taking a hit to their reputation for designing beatiful products if they realse those ipods (nanos?).
although im sure we'll warm up to them in no time

hasn't this site always been close, if not, right on when it comes to rumors?

i'm really starting to think that their source works for chiat in LA...

I'm beginning to think it's real, but it's the fullsize iPod, not the Nano. Two years for an inch shorter? Oh yeah. And they'll sell a million per week.

Mmmmm. Taste the sad.

If it's real, it's the regular iPod

There is no way that the 6g iPod will not have a widescreen like the iPhone...it may not be touch, but the size needs to increase....then again, maybe it is on the back like that Apple patent showed a while back.

This has probably been said already (didn't bother to read through all 7-or-so pages), but maybe the way Apple's going with the iPods is the Nano (hopefully not exactly like pictured) is gonna get video, and (yes, this has probably been said) the 6G iPod will be like the iPhone (minus phone, of course) with widescreen video and such, but with color distinction and a slightly different form.

If they can make the scroll wheel pivot 180 degrees then I am sold. Left handers would be happy and we could use it in the portrait mode still.
One thing about Apple's design concepts, is that they are ambidextrous. So they would have to implement something like this if they used that concept.

That said, ugh. Fugly little buggers, those are.
Yes they are.

guys, take a look at the techs:

H: ca. 3,3" / 8,5 cm
B: ca. 2,4" / 6 cm
Disp: 2,5" / 6,5 cm

I Think those aren't Nanos!!!! and such iPods? ugh...

Looking at the bigger png: not only are the drop shadows off, but the shadows in the concave interior of the scroll wheels are all off as well.

That said, the current images of the nanos on Apple.com are clearly digitally enhanced quite a bit, and the same section of the scroll wheel on the current photos looks entirely photoshopped: http://images.apple.com/ipodnano/images/indexfallingnanos20060912.png

So I'd venture to guess that these are real, and the pic of the monitor was taken by whomever is doing the enhancement...

Real or not, I wouldn't be too disappointed without seeing them in person. You can't determine the color, size, or much else from the image. I'm hoping they run the OS X interface as rumored...

I have my suspicions about these.

The one thing that stands out is the ergonomics. Holding them and using the click wheel would be very cumbersome. If these are produced, you will be holding the ipod with 2 fingers as you scroll the wheel....

If Apple releases these, they are no longer innovators in design. It would be a step backwards me thinks.

Eye bleach please...

Although, if apple went video for the nano then they would conceivably do full screen on the full size ipod.

Ok, it may just be worth it.

ugly?

Here's an idea...

Keep the same size and form factor of the current nano. flip id sideways, hold it like a psp, with screen (widescreen) on the left hand side, and the controls with your right thumb.

This could be switched upside down for left handed people too. my photoshop skills are crap. can anyone do a mockup???
